Opis:
The aim of the study was to find out whether carriers of new genetic defect Cholesterol Deficiency (CD) occur in the population of Polish Holstein-Friesian bulls. Twenty seven bulls were included in the analysis. Bulls were selected as having in the pedigree known carrier of CD (Maughlin Storm CANM000005457798). All bulls were diagnosed by the test described by Menzi et al. (2016) by using allele-specific PCR. Among 27 bulls, 9 new CD carriers were found. Our results show that causal mutation for CD is already transmitted to Polish Holstein-Friesian cattle. The results are sufficient ground to take practical action in order to avoid further spreading of mutation causing CD.

Opis:
The aim of this study was to estimate fatty acid composition, health related lipid indices (atherogenic-AI and thrombogenic-IT indices, h/H ratio) and the correlation between these traits and cholesterol content in various tissues of fatteners. The experiment involved 60 crossbred pigs (PL × PLW) × Duroc. The animals were slaughtered at 115 ± 2.0 kg body weight. The tissue samples (backfat, m. longissimus, liver, heart) were collected to analyze fatty acid profile and cholesterol content. The highest PUFA level was determined in the fat of the heart and liver. Weak to moderate correlations were observed between cholesterol content and most of the studied indices of fatty acid profile of the analyzed tissues. Importantly, the most significant correlations were established between the examined traits in the heart fat. Generally, irrespective of tissue type, the cholesterol level was negatively correlated with total PUFA, n-3 and n-6 FA content and h/H ratio.

Opis:
The final weeks of pregnancy and period of increasing lactation abound with adaptive changes in the intensity of metabolic processes. Maintaining the homeostasis of an organism in prepartum and postpartum periods is the key condition in maintaining the health of the mother and the fetus/calf. The aim of the study was to analyze physiological changes in lipid metabolism in cows during the last month of first pregnancy and in the first two months of lactation, based on the expression of identified apolipoproteins and changes in selected parameters of the lipid metabolism in peripheral blood plasma. Statistically significant changes in the expression of identified apolipoproteins were observed for apolipoprotein A-1 precursor, apolipoprotein A-IV precursor, apolipoprotein E precursor and apolipoprotein J precursor. The lowest expression of the apolipoproteins was noted around parturition and higher expression was observed during the final weeks of pregnancy and during lactation. Tendencies of changes in the concentration of total cholesterol, HDL and LDL were similar in blood plasma from analyzed cows - in the last month of pregnancy a decrease was observed and subsequently an increase in the first two months of lactation was noted. In contrast to abrupt changes observed for total cholesterol, HDL and LDL, changes in concentration of triglycerides were not that extensive and during lactation this parameter was rather stable. Evaluation of changes in the analyzed parameters may contribute to a better understanding of the changes in lipid metabolism occurring in the body of pregnant and lactating young cows.
