Opis:
The effect of textural and chemical properties such as: surface area, pore volume and chemical groups content of the granular activated carbon and monoliths on phenol adsorption in aqueous solutions was studied. Granular activated carbon and monolith samples were produced by chemical activation. They were characterized by using N2  adsorption at 77 K, CO2  adsorption at 273 K, Boehm Titrations and immersion calorimetry in phenol solutions. Microporous materials with different pore size distribution, surface area between 516 and 1685 m2  g−1  and pore volumes between 0.24 and 0.58 cm3  g−1  were obtained. Phenol adsorption capacity of the activated carbon materials increased with increasing BET surface area and pore volume, and is favored by their surface functional groups that act as electron donors. Phenol adsorption capacities are in ranged between 73.5 and 389.4 mg · g−1 .

Opis:
In this paper we report a study on influence of radio-frequency (RF) plasma induced with electron cyclotron resonance (ECR) on multiblock copolymer containing butylene terephthalate hard segments (PBT) and butylene dilinoleate (BDLA) soft segments. The changes in thermal properties were studied by DSC. The changes in wettability of PBT-BDLA surfaces were studied by water contact angle (WCA). We found that ECR-RF plasma surface treatment for 60 s led to decrease of WCA, while prolonged exposure of plasma led to increase of WCA after N2 and N2O2 treatment up to 70°–80°. The O2 reduced the WCA to 50°–56°. IR measurements confirmed that the N2O2 plasma led to formation of polar groups. SEM investigations showed that plasma treatment led to minor surfaces changes. Collectively, plasma treatment, especially O2, induced surface hydrophilicity what could be beneficial for increased cell adhesion in future biomedical applications of these materials.

Opis:
Thermodynamics of the interaction between Cr3+ with β-lactoglobulin type A (BLG-A) was investigated at pH 7.0 and 37°C by isothermal titration calorimetry. A new method to follow the effect of Cr3+ on the stability of BLG-A was introduced. The new solvation model was used to reproduce the enthalpies of BLG-A+ Cr3+ interactions over the whole range of Cr3+ concentrations. The solvation parameters recovered from the new equation are attributed to the structural change of BLG-A and its biological activity. The results obtained indicate that there is a set of two identical binding sites for Cr3+ ions with positive cooperativity. The association equilibrium constants are 14.39 and 0.49 mM-1 for the first and second binding site, respectively. The enthalpy of binding for one mole of Cr+3 ion to one mole of the binding site on BLG-A (ΔH=104.60 kJ mol-1) is obtained.
