Opis:
The aim of the study was to determine the response of new cultivars of spring barley in terms of the grain yield, yield components and protein content in grains, to an increase in the sowing rate. Microplot experiments were carried out in the IUNG-PIB experimental plot in Puławy, where the influence of the following sowing densities on the yielding of selected cultivars was studied: 250, 350 and 450 grains m-2. In the years 2011–2012, the following cultivars were investigated: Basic, Goodluck, Iron, KWS Olof, Natasia, and in the years 2012–2013 cultivars: Despina, Ella, Fariba, Gawrosz (hulless variety), Kucyk and Raskud. The experiments were carried out on a soil of a good wheat complex (heavy loamy sand deposited on light loam). An increase in grain yield (averaged across cultivars) was obtained as the sowing density was increased up to 450 grains m-2. At a high sowing rate (450 grains m-2), a significant increase in the grain yield of the following cultivars occurred: Basic, Iron, Despina and Gawrosz, and an increase in the yielding of other cultivars at this sowing rate, compared to the sowing rate of 350 grains m-2, constituted a trend. The largest increases in the yield at a high sowing rate, in comparison to the low rate in the first series of experiments (2011–2012), were demonstrated by the following varieties: Iron (29%), Basic (25%) and Goodluck (21%), and smaller increases were noted for the cultivars: KWS Olof (13%) and Natasia (10%). In the second series (2012–2013), higher yields at a high sowing rate, as opposed to a low sowing rate, were demonstrated by the following cultivars: Gawrosz, Raskud and Despina (31–34%), and lower yields by: Ella, Fariba and Kucyk cultivars (19–21%). The increase in grain yield at a high sowing rate was the result of a bigger number of ears per unit of area in all cultivars (especially in the Basic and Raskud cultivars). The difference in the weight of 1000 grains and the number of grains per ear of the investigated varieties as a consequence of the sowing rate was negligible. In the years 2012–2013, there occurred an increase in the protein content of grains at a high sowing rate. Among all the cultivars (on average considering the sowing rate), the highest grain yields were produced by Iron and Ella, the highest density of the number of ears per unit of area was demonstrated by Natasia, Kucyk and Ella. The cultivars Iron, Gawrosz and Raskud were found to have a significantly higher number of grains per ear than the remaining cultivars.

Opis:
There are not many results of studies concerning the effect of autumn sowing date on the yield of spring cereal cultivars. Due to the fact that meteorological conditions in winter have become milder, the sowing of spring varieties with increased frost resistance is possible in autumn. Spring varieties suitable for autumn sowing are known as alternative varieties. The aim of the research was to determine the effect of autumn sowing date on the productivity of selected spring varieties. A two-factor field experiment was established using a split-plot design at the Experimental Station of Cultivar Testing in Czesławice (51°30′N 22°24′E), the Lubelskie voivodeship, Poland (2008/2009, 2009/2010, 2010/2011). Experimental factors were as follows: A) sowing date: I – October, II – November, III – spring, B) spring wheat cultivar: Tybalt, Cytra, Bombona, Monsun, Parabola. In the first year of the study, no effect of sowing date on spring wheat yields was found. In subsequent growing seasons, both autumn sowing dates had a positive effect on the yields of the tested spring wheat varieties. The selection of the cultivar did not affect the obtained yields.

Opis:
In the years of 2013–2014, pot experiments were conducted to determine the influence of sowing depth and seed size on the dynamics of spring wheat emergence and yields. The study was carried out in Mitscherlich pots using the random block method, in four replications. The experiment included spring wheat cultivar Tybalt. The first factor of the experiment was the sowing depth of seeds (1, 3, 5, 7 cm), while the second factor was the seed yield. Four levels of the second factor were taken into account: a1 – certified material (purchased), a2 – small-sized seeds (1.8 – 2.2 mm), a3 – medium seeds (2.2 – 2.5 mm), a4 – large seeds (> 2.5 mm). Adequate size of seeds for the study was ensured by sorting out of the certified material on Vogel screens. The research showed the joint impact of seed size and sowing depth on grain yield formation, number of plants and ears per pot and production tillering. The application of the sowing depth of 7 cm resulted in a significant decrease in grain yield from the pot of all seed fractions, especially the smallest fraction of seeds (1.8 – 2.2 mm). The variant of sowing large seeds (> 2.5 mm) at the depth of 3 cm turned out to be the most beneficial for grain yield.

Opis:
The aim of this study was to determine the effect of varying levels of nitrogen fertilization (0, 70, 100 kg ha-1) on yield of spring triticale varieties Milewo, Mazur, Puzon and So- pot under conditions of simplified and traditional tillage. The re- search was conducted in 2017, 2018 and 2020 in Experimental Station of IUNG-PIB in Osiny on soil of good wheat complex. The yield level of spring triticale was affected by the course of weather conditions during the study period, tillage system, nitro- gen doses and variety. Under conditions of more favorable pre- cipitation distribution during the growing season (2017, 2018), grain yields were 32% higher than in 2020. The traditional till- age system ensured higher yields of spring triticale. The applied rate of nitrogen fertilization of 70 kg ha-1 proved to be sufficient for spring triticale yielding under experimental conditions. Under both tillage systems the highest yields were obtained from So- pot. Under conventional tillage Milewo and under reduced tillage Mazur yielded similarly to Sopot. The lowest yield was obtained from Puzon

Opis:
Recently, the incidence of droughts in Poland has clearly increased. This is a result of the observed climate change, which, according to the most likely scenarios, will have a signifi-cantly perceptible influence on agricultural production. Amongst the observed changes, particularly noticeable is the conspicuous tendency towards an increase in air temperature, solar radiation and wind speed, along with the decrease in precipitation inthe spring–summer period, i.e., in the period of peak water demand. The short growing season and the shallow root system make spring barley sensitive to drought stress. Both the quantity and quality of the yield of this crop depend on the volume and distri-bution of rainfall during the growing season. The water storage capacity of the soil and the plant genotype are equally important. Studies on the influence of drought on the spring barley yields carried out in various scientific centres have demonstrated that the best yields of this cereal are obtained on loamy and silty soils, while the size of the yield is largely limited by water shortage at the end of the vegetative development stage and the beginning of the formation of generative organs. The aim of this work was to summarize the current state of knowledge on the impact of drought stress on the production of spring barley in Poland and to indicate measures compensating for yield losses in drought con-ditions.

Opis:
The study assessed the impact of foliar fertilization with manganese and copper on the yield, yield structure features, SPAD, LAI, and the chemical composition of 4 spring barley cultivars. It has been demonstrated that the cultivars responded to the applied foliar fertilization with manganese and copper with yield increases. In the case of hulled cultivars Hajduczek and Promyk, as well as in the hulless cultivar Gawrosz, higher yield increases, compared to those in the control treatment, were observed after foliar fertilization with manganese than with copper. The cultivar Suweren responded more favourably to foliar fertilization with copper than with manganese. Foliar fertilization with copper resulted in a higher number of ears per 1 m2 and number of grains per ear and a lower weight of a 1000 grains. The relative chlorophyll content in F-2 leaves was higher in the cultivars fertilized with copper, compared to manganese; the opposite was true only for Suweren. The LAI index depended on the cultivar and the microelement used. The cultivars Hajduczek and Gawrosz demonstrated the most favourable LAI index. The analysis revealed a higher contents of both total protein and crude ash in the chemical composition of grains from micronutrient treated plots vs. the control plots. Larger increases in comparison to the control were observed after the application of copper than manganese.

Porównywano odmiany: Basic, Goodluck, Iron, KWS Aliciana, Natasia (seria 2011–2012) i Despina, Ella, Fariba, Gawrosz (forma nagoziarnista), Kucyk i Raskud (seria 2012–2013). Uwzględniono dwa terminy siewu: 1–5 IV i 10 dni później. Mniejsze zróżnicowanie dotyczyło liczby ziaren w kłosie i masy 1000 ziaren. Wysokim plonem ziarna, dzięki większej liczbie kłosów w łanie, charakteryzowały się odmiany: Natasia, Kucyk i Ella. Najwyższą liczbą ziaren w kłosie wyróżniały się odmiany Iron i Raskud. Nagoziarnista odmiana Gawrosz wykazała najniższy plon ziarna, ale najwyższą zawartość białka w ziarnie.
During the period 2011–2013, microplot experiments on spring barley were carried out in the experimental field of the Institute of Soil Science and Plant Cultivation in Pulawy, on a good wheat soil complex. The following cultivars were compared: Basic, Goodluck, Iron, KWS Aliciana, Natasia (series 2011–2012) and Despina, Ella, Fariba, Gawrosz (naked), Kucyk i Raskud (series 2012–2013) in terms of their characters determining grain yield and their response to sowing date: 1–5 April and 10 days later. The delayed sowing date caused decrease of number of ears per unit area and grain yield, and increase of protein content in grain, but did not result in significant changes in the number of grains per ear and in 1000 grain weight. Goodluck i Natasia, Ella, Gawrosz and Kucyk with higher tillering ability, can be considered to be cultivars more tolerant to delayed sowing date. Among the cultivars tested, there were large differences in productive tillering of plants, number of ears per unit area, and grain yield. Smaller differences related to number of grains per ear and 1000 grain weight. Natasia, Kucyk and Ella were characterized by high grain yield thanks to higher number of ears. Iron and Raskud were characterised by the highest number of grains per ear.
