    The aim of the article is to present the theoretical framework used to prepare and realisation the research “Celebrating the creation and propagation of brands (national, local, regional) in local communities”. From the perspective of that research, the most important theoretical categories are: cultural diversity, multiculturalism and borderland. The analysis is primarily intended to show the extent to which multiculturalism can be treated as an important context for the creation of territorial brands in borderland communities. It requires a critical look at the sociological and social use of this category. The relation between multiculturalism and social relations on the borderlands is very complex and non-obvious. Therefore, the problem of forms of the presence of multiculturalism on the borderland is the second issue raised in the analysis. That means that not every understanding of multiculturalism, and not every aspect of its broad understanding, is treated as applicable to describe cultural relations on the borderland. The third part of the article – referring to the empirical material from the research – tries to show the locally observed use of multiculturalism.

    Te article aims to present the relationship between ethno-cultural diferentiation and social capital. It analyses both theoretical accounts and empirical studies conducted in diferent social settings. Te author emphasizes advantages and disadvantages of bonding social capital, i.e. social connections, networks and groups of people similar to each other in terms of socio-cultural characteristics. Te analysis outlines diferent explanations concerning possible negative relationship between ethno-cultural diferentiation and bridging social capital.

    In this paper, I assume that in modern society under the conditions of democratization at least two fundamental social processes are taking place. Te processes of democratization bring about the civil society empowerment, which result in society becoming increasingly diverse. At the same time, from the point of view of the dominant part of society, the increase of societal diversity causes the loss of indispensable cohesion and communital character of society. Tis results in rising confict between diversity and community, confict that at least over time becomes politicized and need to be solved.In my view, the way to solve this contradiction lies in constructing the nationally heterogeneous civil state and pluralistic society

    Opis:
    The dispute over whether there exists a Silesian nation, Silesian nationality or whether Silesians are an ethnic group, has flared up in Poland, but mainly in the Silesian Voivodeship, on a surprisingly large scale. This rather fresh controversy, growing since the turn of the 80s and 90s of the last century, i.e. since the beginning of the transformation processes in Poland, takes place in public discussions and in the media, and its finale – in the courts. Some believe that the basis is the Silesians’ disappointment with the way the region has been transformed, through a destructive rather than creative restructuring, through closure of coal mines and steel mills, all of which has resulted in citizens’ impoverishment, in sudden outbreak of unemployment, and in the lack of any program or strategy for the region. The 1990s saw the appearance of an idea of recognizing the Silesian national distinctiveness, founded on a wave of renaissance of Silesian cultural identity. Loud became demands of reviving the idea of autonomy of the Silesian province, and the fight for recognition of Silesian nationality as a different social and political entity. The Silesians, convinced of the marginalization of indigenous people as well as of injustices and wrongs inflicted by the Polish authorities after World War II, in various ways, including the political and judicial ones, are attempting to gain the status of a national minority or, as in recent times, an ethnic one. It is hard not to agree with the thesis that these efforts fit in with the idea of multiculturalism, which – being an indicator of the level of democratization of all spheres of life – has accelerated the revival of regional identity in a large part of the population of Silesia and provided them with the ideological basis to articulate their needs, expectations and aspirations.

    The process of creating a local, regional or national brand is connected with the social and cultural specificity of a region. Considering the above the text gives a short outline of the history and general characteristic of two towns located in the south – eastern part of Poland Voivodes, near the border with Slovakia and Ukraine: Przemyśl and Sanok. In the analysis, particular attention is focused on general socioeconomic characteristics. Among the discussed problems are also: cultural diversity of the city, local political scene, activities of local cultural institutions and NGO’s, problems of education and local media market. Town fests and selected cultural events are also presented.

    The borderland is a specific reality, which not reduce for one culture because this culture was created by connected, penetrated or crashed culture in one social space, for example borderland language, traditions and customs or architecture. The distinctive mark of borderland are ethnic and nation minorities which define this social space. The Polish and Czech Republic borderland is being created by Polish and Czech cultures but others – Slovak, German, Moravian and Roma cultures, too. In this context we can talk about isolation process on the one hand and on the other hand about social exchange which give new social reality. The research of borderland is first of all analysis how cultural diversity create social, economic and politic life in the borderland.

    Bialystok is a culturally diversifed city. Tis fact results in the presence of different cultural groups in the city public space, which at the same time becomes a feld for manifestation of cultural identities, and meeting (or even clashing) of these groups. Resorting to documentary photography, the authoress attempts at observing the instances of multiculturalism in the space of Bialystok in order to create a typology of local intercultural relations. Te laboratory metaphor used in the article refects the dynamic quality of the observed phenomena: diverse cultural groups, reacting one with another as chemical components in a laboratory, constitute the local community with its particular symbols, practices, and problems. Te public space they occupy and make use of is a place of a natural social experiment – the creation of a multicultural social order within the city boundaries

    The article tackles the issue of methodological paradigms in research on multicultural education. It embraces reflections over the traditional approach engaging biased, europocentric stand, often questioning the principle of the equality of cultures, but on the other hand provides with a proposal of introduction of the indigenous model to the widely perceived practice of constructing and conducting intercultural research projects. Such perspectives allows the researched communities to participate actively in the process of research at each stage, contributing to the dissemination of knowledge taking into account cultural difference, hence being culturally conscious. An example of own researching experiences from the region of Bosnia-Herzegovina is provided in the context of appropriate preparation for indigenous approach in research. The author additionally proposes a set of specific competences and soft skills which facilitate such approach if manifested by the researcher, to recall openness, flexibility, adaptation skills and open-mindedness for instance.
