Opis:
In the paper, the relation between a borderland region and the social identity of borderland inhabitants is considered. A question is posed whether the borderland has a stronger impact on the social identity of its inhabitants or the direction of the impact is opposite. The answer to this question is sought in the studies of borderland theoreticians and researchers, and in a reconstruction of how this relation is contemplated by them. The analyses lead to the conclusion that the borderland, its characteristics and properties undoubtedly have a stronger impact on the identity of its inhabitants than their identity and its specificity affect the borderland. In the conclusions, a thesis is formulated about the borderland effect, which is a sociological unobservable variable, whose impact, among others, is manifested in specific social identity profiling of its inhabitants.

It was already in the Middle Ages that the lands of today’s Ukraine were the area of clashes between the East and the West, Rome and the Byzantine Empire. Those clashes were manifested in confessional discrepancies of Catholicism and Orthodoxy as well as the differences in sacral language. In Ukraine, similarly to the whole area of the Latin – Byzantine borderline, the decisive factor in the later ethnical processes was not the original tribal structure of those lands, but the scope of the Eastern Christianity influence. In the days of Kievan Rus’, the vast area of this country was home to the general attitude of “Russian” community, primarily understood as the community of Eastern Christianity followers. The remains of the “Russian peoples” community lasted long after the fall of Kievan Rus’. To some extent, its origins can be found until this day. In the era of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, emerges the identity of the “Russian nation”, separate from the Russians in the Grand Duchy of Moscow in the political, ideological, but also largely in the religious, cultural, and linguistic sense. However, it is not possible to observe separate Ukrainian and Belarussian ethnic groups in this area until the end of the XVI century. The Ruthenian ethnos was entirely separate from the Russian ethnos. The differentiation into the Ukrainian and Belarussian ethnos begins after the Union of Lublin, following which the Ukrainian lands become a part of the Crown, and the Belarussian lands remain a part of Lithuania. The political and cultural independence of Ukrainian lands is consolidated with the Khmelnytsky Uprising and the events that followed.

Opis:
Te paper focuses on the identity of a contemporary Polish nationalist movement. It is based on biographical narrative interviews which were carried out among members of three Polish nationalist organizations: the All Youth Polish, the National Rebirth of Poland and the National Radical Camp. Participants of nationalist movements mobilize themselves and protest against increasing diversity. Te contemporary Polish nationalism can be understood as the particular kind of cultural resistance to globalization, cultural diversifcation, lef- -wing activities. Te homosexuals and feminists seem to be their main opponents. Nationalists defne themselves as the defenders of tradition, history and Polish values and hence they attempt to make the public sphere homogeneous. According to their statements, the public sphere should be reserved for Polish, Catholic values and norms. As I conclude, the nationalist resistance can be perceived as the result of anxiety for the status of national identity and longing for universal values or constant points of reference.

Opis:
Tis article discusses the question of the reconstruction of social memory in Polish cities. To illustrate this process the author decided to employ a comparative approach and analyzed this process in two Polish cities: Krakow and Wroclaw. Te case selection was directed by their comparable population size and their importance as cultural and scientifc centres. As far as diferences between the three are concerned, their demographic reproduction patterns are substantially distinct. Krakow has preserved and reproduced its traditional bourgeois character, whereas Wroclaw serves as a typical example of a post-migrant city with an entirely reconstructed identity because of the post-World War II population shifs. Despite their multiethnic composition and heritage, in the formative period for contemporary collective identities in the 19th century these cities built their identities solely with relation to symbolically homogenous contexts (Polish in Krakow and German in Wroclaw). Tese nationally homogeneous discourses were even strengthened during the postwar period and continued long afer WWII. Te breakthrough came with the collapse of communism. Te inhabitants of the cities regained a possibility of social agency and by this token a chance for building new identities. However, these processes did not start from scratch. Tey were determined by existing social and cultural structures which imprinted their particular patterns on their new developments.

Opis:
The article deals with the concept of “new materialism“ and tries to explain “how discourses come to matter” and “how matter comes to discourses” [Barad 2003, 2007]. Borders and border regions are particularly revealing places for social research, especially in the present era of growing globalization, growth of the EU and mass immigration. Two opposite, reciprocal processes are open for investigation on the European territory: disappearance and strengthening of borders. Analyses of the Derridian concept of “unconditional hospitality” and the new materialism discourse will provide a possibility to describe identity deconstruction. Jacques Derrida analyzed the limits of the contemporary socialpolitical concepts that have challenged European existence in the recent years. His political philosophy concentrates on what happens when people, excluded from any system of politics or law, present themselves and ask for refuge or justice. After the long years of “deterritorialization”, today we observe such tendency as the process of re-territorialization. The author examines the public European discourse on religion, civilization and race belonging as a mark of European identity deconstruction.

Opis:
The dispute over whether there exists a Silesian nation, Silesian nationality or whether Silesians are an ethnic group, has flared up in Poland, but mainly in the Silesian Voivodeship, on a surprisingly large scale. This rather fresh controversy, growing since the turn of the 80s and 90s of the last century, i.e. since the beginning of the transformation processes in Poland, takes place in public discussions and in the media, and its finale – in the courts. Some believe that the basis is the Silesians’ disappointment with the way the region has been transformed, through a destructive rather than creative restructuring, through closure of coal mines and steel mills, all of which has resulted in citizens’ impoverishment, in sudden outbreak of unemployment, and in the lack of any program or strategy for the region. The 1990s saw the appearance of an idea of recognizing the Silesian national distinctiveness, founded on a wave of renaissance of Silesian cultural identity. Loud became demands of reviving the idea of autonomy of the Silesian province, and the fight for recognition of Silesian nationality as a different social and political entity. The Silesians, convinced of the marginalization of indigenous people as well as of injustices and wrongs inflicted by the Polish authorities after World War II, in various ways, including the political and judicial ones, are attempting to gain the status of a national minority or, as in recent times, an ethnic one. It is hard not to agree with the thesis that these efforts fit in with the idea of multiculturalism, which – being an indicator of the level of democratization of all spheres of life – has accelerated the revival of regional identity in a large part of the population of Silesia and provided them with the ideological basis to articulate their needs, expectations and aspirations.

Tis paper discusses phenomenon of the postcolonial studies proliferation. Concepts once created to describe experiences of colonized nations and societies are nowadays applied to former colonial powers and other European countries. Te examples that relate primarily to the works on the Polish postcolonial experience indicate the advantages and disadvantages of such an approach. On the onehand postcolonial theory provides an interesting fresh perspective and sheds a new light on the history and the present day of many European countries, but this new view comes with the price of blurring the subject of postcolonial studies. Any attempt to avoid such a situation is difcult since postcolonial studies by their very nature are open to the multiplicity of discourses and appreciation of the importance of minorities identity.
