Multiculturalism is eternal phenomenon, which exists in the whole world. It brings many positive results, but may also be the cause or pretext of conflicts, wars, tragedies. Multiculturaliral education and above all intercultural education is the attempt to create multicultural world, in which people live in friendship and cooperate creating the conditions towards satisfying course of living. The popularization of ideas and practice of intercultural education depends on the inclusion of various kinds of multiculturalism and on taking advantage of the chances brought by globalisation. The article presents the main types of multiculturalism and proeducational chances related to some of the existing ways of globalisation. On this background, different strategies of acting, which are intercultural education friendly, are presented.

The main goal of the article is indication the need of intercultural education in a local society. In the paper is discussed an example of Sejny – the small city in north-east part of Poland. Despite of long, common history of two different social groups, living in the same city – Poles and Lithuanians – there is a need of collaboration on the field of intercultural education. The discussion is based on the theoretical considerations and research which was conducted in 2015 in Sejny within the project of National Center of Culture – „Dom Kultury + Inicjatywy Lokalne 2015.

Opis:
Shaping learners’ intercultural competence has been slowly paving its way to a due rank in education. Developing intercultural competence results from familiarization with culture, which may take place in a direct or indirect way. What is essential here is the role of the teacher, who functions as a mediator between cultures. The presented study aims at indicating the growing significance of intercultural aspects of education in Europe - a united multiculturalness bothered by the crisis, as well as presenting (in reference to bilingual teaching) theoretical and practical solutions for intercultural education, providing inspiration for pedagogical practice. Bilingual teaching, as one of the most innovative forms of foreign language teaching, is a manifestation of practical implementation of the intercultural approach to education and it enhances shaping intercultural competence.

The aim of the study was to determine the importance of education in the formation of social distance of Polish emigrants towards peoples of other nationalities such as: Jews, Russians, English, Pakistani, Arabs, and Japanese. The study involved 262 people, including 137 Polish immigrants in England and 125 citizens of England as the host country. An adapted version of the E. Bogardus scale was used to measure social distance. The analyses performed show that the attitude of Polish emigrants towards people of other nationalities differed according to the level of education of the Poles surveyed. Only in the respondents’ attitude to Jews the level of education was not a differentiating factor. In all other cases, statistically significant differences were observed. British respondents generally declared a positive attitude towards people of other nationalities. Their level of distancing was rather homogeneous and more favorable, not dependent on their level of education.

Rwanda today faces various challenges of civilization, first of all, however, it has ti copy with the legacy of the ehnic genocide. Not surprisingly, that one of the fundamental tasks that the country and its government set itself after 1994 became the problem of the legal judgement of persons responsible for genocide and of the establishing of national unity, which would prevent Rwanda from the next conflict. Therefore, apart from judging on a massive scale all those guilty of crimes, the government has taken parallel action for the idea of commemorating the victims and began the process of building national unity. Today, Rwanda is a place for education which aims at the creation of a one national community and the state, in other words „education for the community”.

The author draws attention to the challenges and tasks of intercultural education in the context of contemporary problems related to the implementation of the dilemmas and principles of multiculturalism. Multiculturalism is treated and analysed not only as the coexistence of different cultural groups in the same space, but primarily as an identity, ideological and educational phenomenon that allows to notice, point and deliver new strategies in intercultural education. The prospect of emancipation, polyphony, J. Tischner’s philosophy of dialogue, ethics of respect for life by A. Schweitzer, genetic law of cultural development by L. S. Vygotsky and the changes of countries functions from military-defensive and economic towards social and cultural, are the basics to formulate the strategies for intercultural education and the development of democratic multicultural societies. By referring to the twenty years of actions that have been undertaking by the Department of Intercultural Education at the University of Bialystok, the author indicates the diversity of educational and social practices of different nature at local, regional, national and international levels. These practices are based on considering in these activities the needs, expectations and aspirations of majority and minority groups about the right to preserve their own culture and the creation of rules of coexistence and shared responsibility for socio-cultural area that is culturally diverse.

The author, referring to his own research on the Polish-Lithuanian, Polish-Belarusian and Polish-Ukrainian borderland, formulates the thesis that after the collapse of the USSR individual nations began to develop their own national identity in opposition to other nations. The author poses the question of the civic loyalty with simultaneous loyalty to the culture of origin, national culture. He gives examples and attempts to answer in the context of the arising problems of identity in the emerging multicultural societies. Particular attention is paid to the problems of identity of Poles, as citizens of other countries created after the collapse of the Soviet Union, that is of Poles in Lithuania, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Buryatia.

Compliance with the rules of political correctness in schools located in culturally diverse environments is not only political but also methodical challenge. One form of this task is called safe spaces, which are territorial borderlands in the reality of schools which apply the principles of dialogue on the basis of political correctness. Due to the different understanding of political correctness and the possibility of lobbying by representatives of minorities on the organizers of safe space, we have to deal with the abuse of their status. As a result, the ideas of political correctness and the establishment of intercultural communication are often questioned, challenged or it has been give them a meaning far from the original. Te author of this article presents and argues the role of lifelong intercultural education in developing intercultural competence among the members of contemporary multicultural and culturally diferentiating societies, including Polish society. Te author describes the main task of lifelong intercul-tural education, which is conducting educational activities that will facilitate the transition from reaction to the otherness (as in multiculturalism) to interaction with the “other” (as in interculturalism).

The text draws attention to the theory and practice of intercultural contact, constituting the basis of the communal functioning of communities, groups and individuals. By referring to interactionist concepts and praxis, we attempt to present the realities of conducting intercultural (Polish-Israeli) youth meetings. Opis:
What is focused on in the search for the mechanisms of constructing young people’s identity is the role and significance of the socio-cultural environment and formal and non-formal intercultural education, which supports individuals in the unceasing creation of their own Self, in understanding the world and organizing positive intercultural relations. In the theoretical framework of the undertaken considerations, the following concepts are referred to: J. Kozielecki’s concept of the multidimensional human, J. Nikitorowicz’s concept of constantly created identity, T. Lewowicki’s theory of identity behaviours, and M. Sobecki’s concept of identification profiles. The assumption is made that shaping the multidimensional identity of the young first of all requires cultural rooting, educational activities and the support of educational policy. Against the background of the research conducted systematically for 25 years among the youth from the Polish-Czech borderland, the dynamics is shown of shaping the young generation’s feeling of identity. Moreover, the intensity of identifications is diagnosed as well as young people’sidentification profiles, which provide information on interrelations between particularidentification dimensions in declarations of a person. The publication aim is to familiarize the concept of education for culture and report how it is understood among cultural animators and educators in the Podlasie region, Poland. The article presents academic definitions of education for culture, similarities and differences between this concept and other terms, such as cultural education, intercultural education and multicultural education. Furthermore, it presents the ways of defining the concept of education for culture by people involved in the cultural activities in Podlasie region. Comparison of these perspectives shows the specifics of local cultural animators and educators – their ideas, aspirations and problems. Apparently, their definitions are varied by the type of institution they represent, still, the most common way of defining education for culture is conservative, close to the definition of cultural education.

Current processes of globalization and increased mobility of people have caused that the competencies for intercultural communication become a condition for proper functioning of society. Together with a group of researchers from the Faculty of Pedagogy and Psychology, University of Bialystok, we undertook a research on conditions of intercultural communication competence of young people in the Northeastern Poland. These competencies result from four dimensions: knowledge of cultural differences, reaction to situations involving cultural differences, position on the continuum of ethnocentrism - relativism and attitudes toward cultural diversity. In the text, I present the analysis of selected factors that influence the family which result in the development of communicative competence in the studied group. The main idea is that family, in spite of social changes, is still the most important socializing group which creates life attitudes of young people.

In the following article the author presents basic directions of the European Union’s policy regarding migration and third-country nationals, as well as displays the significance of education in achieving said objectives. This article presents a legal framework of the European Union’s educational policy in migration’s context and shows the problem of immigrants’ integration through education in the culturally varied societies. The author draws attention to the significance of the integration’s model in which intercultural education plays a leading role.
