Opis:
In the paper, the relation between a borderland region and the social identity of borderland inhabitants is considered. A question is posed whether the borderland has a stronger impact on the social identity of its inhabitants or the direction of the impact is opposite. The answer to this question is sought in the studies of borderland theoreticians and researchers, and in a reconstruction of how this relation is contemplated by them. The analyses lead to the conclusion that the borderland, its characteristics and properties undoubtedly have a stronger impact on the identity of its inhabitants than their identity and its specificity affect the borderland. In the conclusions, a thesis is formulated about the borderland effect, which is a sociological unobservable variable, whose impact, among others, is manifested in specific social identity profiling of its inhabitants.

Opis:
The borderland is a specific reality, which not reduce for one culture because this culture was created by connected, penetrated or crashed culture in one social space, for example borderland language, traditions and customs or architecture. The distinctive mark of borderland are ethnic and nation minorities which define this social space. The Polish and Czech Republic borderland is being created by Polish and Czech cultures but others – Slovak, German, Moravian and Roma cultures, too. In this context we can talk about isolation process on the one hand and on the other hand about social exchange which give new social reality. The research of borderland is first of all analysis how cultural diversity create social, economic and politic life in the borderland.

Opis:
The paper includes the results of the sociological survey accomplished in Zgorzelec (2010), Gubin (201 3) and Słubice (2015). In each case the same methodology was applied – structured interview with probability representative samples. The paper focuses on issues: 1. The emotional approach of the inhabitants of Zgorzelec, Gubin and Słubice, i.e. declared level of liking, indifference or antipathy towards German neighbours, and the opinions on mutual relations. 2. The readiness for contact with a German neighbour appearing in different roles (“the close ones”, “professional”, and the roles “connected with the market”). 3. The type of contacts with Germans – the reasons of mobility to the neighbouring German town by the inhabitants of Zgorzelec, Gubin and Słubice and frequency of border crossing in order to achieve particular goals. Interethnic relations in the situation of geographical vicinity and the open border are shaped on different grounds than the ones in the interior. We try to compare the results of the research accomplished in the borderland with the data obtained from the research done on the all-Polish sample (by the Institute of Public Affairs). The paper includes also methodological reflections (about comparison of researches within borderlandstudies and research on borderland effect).

The aim of the article is to present the theoretical framework used to prepare and realisation the research “Celebrating the creation and propagation of brands (national, local, regional) in local communities”. From the perspective of that research, the most important theoretical categories are: cultural diversity, multiculturalism and borderland. The analysis is primarily intended to show the extent to which multiculturalism can be treated as an important context for the creation of territorial brands in borderland communities. It requires a critical look at the sociological and social use of this category. The relation between multiculturalism and social relations on the borderlands is very complex and non-obvious. Therefore, the problem of forms of the presence of multiculturalism on the borderland is the second issue raised in the analysis. That means that not every understanding of multiculturalism, and not every aspect of its broad understanding, is treated as applicable to describe cultural relations on the borderland. The third part of the article – referring to the empirical material from the research – tries to show the locally observed use of multiculturalism.

The article covers the area of twenty-five years scientific outputs in Sociology regarding the Polish-German borderland. The data on which the analysis is based are 192 publications which has been classified by the author into the universe of analytical texts referring to the area mentioned above. Results of analyses presented in the publication firstly indicate a sustainable rate of growth of knowledge and analysis in subsequent years, secondly allow to notice high concentration of articles in multiply-authors monographies – in comparison much to those coming from magazines and shows prevalence of fourteen scientists as authors of about 60% of overall number of publications. Leading areas of sociological consideration on the Polish western frontier microcosm can be identified as research on the creation and development of the borderland society, daily life of its inhabitants, explorations of frontier cities, national neighborhood, stereotypes, low-life cases.

At the time of the Polish People’s Republic and the Soviet Union there was a thesis of friendship and brotherhood disseminated between the two countries and nations. This was, however, a purely official belief based on the ideology of those times. In fact communication between people, including those inhabiting the borderland was restricted and controlled. The KGB was directly responsible for supervision, infiltration of people and enforcement of the CPSU patterns of behaviour. Despite the KGB operations, many forms of social activities were not disrupted by the KGB. Moreover, the processes taking place in Poland had to some extent an impact on behaviour and attitudes of the residents of the Lazdijai region (LSSR). To reduce this, the Soviet authorities limited interactions between both nations, especially in times of political breakthrough resulting in strikes, the rise of „Solidarity”, and the imposition of martial law.

Opis:
The aim of the article is to introduce a neglected section of the Ukrainian-Polish borderland, Transcarpathia, within the area of the sociology of borderland. The author sheds some light on the ethnic, geographical and political peculiarity of this region, with special attention paid to its isolation from Poland, one of the oblast’s close neighbours. Apart from the relevant literature (rather poor), the article is based on the author’s own observations made in a few Transcarpathian villages in 2014 and 2015 as well as on their inhabitants’ opinions concerning the problems with opening up the border-crossing in Lubnya. The gist of the considerations is to show different shades of Transcarpathia’s isolation from Poland which results in the region’s inhabitants’ lack of contacts with Poles and lack of knowledge on Poland. Consequently, Lubnya and its Polish neighbour from over the mountains, Wołosate, being geographically very close, are socially and culturally quite distant, not to say – alien. The article concludes with a range theoretical conceptions that might be applied in order to understand better the reality of the Transcarpathian section of the Ukrainian-Polish borderland.

There is a stereotype that the Republic of Belarus is a country where pluralism does not exist in all spheres of life. However, this statement is not precisely correct, as contemporary Belarus demonstrates political neutrality and pluralism in the foreign policy and multiculturalism inside the country. Multiculturalism is viewed in the paper as mutual tolerance among the population and respect to the Otherness in cultural life. Two major spheres of pluralistic phenomenon are discussed: ethnic composition of Belarus and its religious confessions. Although a major part of the believers belongs to two Christian confessions, Orthodox and Catholic, many other confessions and new religious movements also exist. Religious pluralism is a practical reality in Belarus which has the reputation of the most religiously tolerant post-Soviet country. Contemporary laws provide the legal basis for tolerant relations in the country, and there is a historical tradition of religious tolerance in Belarus.

What is focused on in the search for the mechanisms of constructing young people’s identity is the role and significance of the socio-cultural environment and formal and non-formal intercultural education, which supports individuals in the unceasing creation of their own Self, in understanding the world and organizing positive intercultural relations. In the theoretical framework of the undertaken considerations, the following concepts are referred to: J. Kozielecki’s concept of the multidimensional human, J. Nikitorowicz’s concept of constantly created identity, T. Lewowicki’s theory of identity behaviours, and M. Sobecki’s concept of identification profiles. The assumption is made that shaping the multidimensional identity of the young first of all requires cultural rooting, educational activities and the support of educational policy. Against the background of the research conducted systematically for 25 years among the youth from the Polish-Czech borderland, the dynamics is shown of shaping the young generation’s feeling of identity. Moreover, the intensity of identifications is diagnosed as well as young people’sidentification profiles, which provide information on interrelations between particularidentification dimensions in declarations of a person. It was already in the Middle Ages that the lands of today’s Ukraine were the area of clashes between the East and the West, Rome and the Byzantine Empire. Those clashes were manifested in confessional discrepancies of Catholicism and Orthodoxy as well as the differences in sacral language. In Ukraine, similarly to the whole area of the Latin – Byzantine borderline, the decisive factor in the later ethnical processes was not the original tribal structure of those lands, but the scope of the Eastern Christianity influence. In the days of Kievan Rus’, the vast area of this country was home to the general attitude of “Russian” community, primarily understood as the community of Eastern Christianity followers. The remains of the “Russian peoples” community lasted long after the fall of Kievan Rus’. To some extent, its origins can be found until this day. In the era of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, emerges the identity of the “Russian nation”, separate from the Russians in the Grand Duchy of Moscow in the political, ideological, but also largely in the religious, cultural, and linguistic sense. However, it is not possible to observe separate Ukrainian and Belarussian ethnic groups in this area until the end of the XVI century. The Ruthenian ethnos was entirely separate from the Russian ethnos. The differentiation into the Ukrainian and Belarussian ethnos begins after the Union of Lublin, following which the Ukrainian lands become a part of the Crown, and the Belarussian lands remain a part of Lithuania. The political and cultural independence of Ukrainian lands is consolidated with the Khmelnytsky Uprising and the events that followed.

The article presents the results of research into youth conducted with the use of the survey method in the borderlands in Poland, Ukraine and Hungary. The gathered data indicates that the attitudes and life aspirations are formed by three factors. The first one is connected with the type of the borderland, and the “borderland effect” is observed here. The second one regards socio-economic differences between countries. The most commonly observed differences between youth’s attitudes are observed on the West-East line. The third factor is of cultural character and mainly it is formed by psycho-cultural trends resulting from the processes of globalization and the specificity of being young. In this case we observe a global teenager, who aims at fulfilling their needs beyond borders.

The goal of the analysis is to reconstruct a common model of the notion of multiculturalism, linked to activities in the field of culture, in local communities of the borderland. The phenomenon observed in Poland is the appearance of the idea of multiculturalism which does not refer to a real ethnic diversification. The represented analysis allows formulation of a thesis, that this phenomenon may be connected with external pressure of globalisation processes and mechanisms of institutional development of local culture in the European Union. Such factors cause usage of resources connected with multicultural heritage by local leaders, for utilisation of this heritage grants tangible benefits for the local community. Unfortunately, at the same time such activities result in rather avoidance of multicultural contacts than their development. This concept of multiculturalism is connected with artificial tolerance and does not contribute to the development of an open society.

The paper comprises a theoretical exploration focused upon the ethnic borderland and the potential factors of its decomposition present and active in contemporary world. Namely, attention and discussion had been focused upon peculiarity of ethnic borderland build and maintained by social and neighbourhood relationships between members of numerous local ethnic groups, and its distinction from areas located near the border-line, on the one, and from the social boundaries on the other hand. The argument of this paper is that contemporary further existence of ethnic borderland has been threatened by a number of factors, among them the uniformity caused by cultural globalisation, that is by globally transmitted products of popular culture, by mass emigration from the borderland, by multiculturalism, and by gradual deconstruction of the nation-state.
