The paper is dedicated to a presentation of a fragment of the first phase of a comprehensive empirical study conducted in Białystok in the year 2015 (Biernacka head, Wądołowski, Wołyniec), with a focus on the young generation’s attitudes with reference to migration. Taking into account high unemployment rates in Poland and relatively meagre life chances comparing to many so-called old Europe countries, a life trajectory based on migration is recognized by many Poles as the only one that makes sense and is worth the effort. Thereupon, future orientation options to be selected by respondents in an original self-administered survey designed for the purpose of this project have been organized with a direct reference to migration. Those were investigated in particular contexts, with relation to study, job and remuneration prospects in their homeland and abroad. The project allows to envisage patterns of probable future behaviours of young generations in the country where migration in the early adulthood has become a common course of action.

The theoretical objective of the article is to straighten out inconsistencies concerning the notion of identity by distinguishing the way it may be defined within two contradictory perspectives: cognitive absolutism and relativism. While the first of them promotes the vision of the social world as based upon the unique truth, the latter treats it as being constructed by social actors themselves. Upon ordering the theoretical conundrum, the article presents the empirical research conducted by the team: Maja Biernacka (head), Wojciech Wądołowski, Łukasz Wołyniec from the University of Białystok. It was conducted in the period between April and June 2015 via an original, standardized questionnaire on a representative sample (n=1000) of the student community in three major public academic institutions in Białystok, i.e. University of Białystok, Medical University of Białystok and Białystok University of Technology. The module of the research which is exhibited in the article refers to self-defined territorial identities of respondents and their denomination as a statistical correlate.

“Swoja mowa” differs from literary Belarusian language in phonetics and from Ukrainian language in vocabulary, which is similar to Belarusian. “Swoja mowa” gained the status of Podlachian literary micro language. Intellectual accomplishments of its creators cannot obscure the fact that the language did not gain many followers. In my opinion the reason for this situation is the lack of a particular social concept of the future, not of the past. The same can be applied to Belarusian language, although its speakers can at least theoretically rely on the new Belarusianisation policy in Belarus. On the other hand, “the plain language” has found a niche – praise of the countryside and rebellion against the polish-speaking high culture.

The connotation of Bialystok as a multicultural city has recently become a part of its image, but thanks to advertising endeavours it has become popular. This article answers the question how ethnic relations in the twentieth century were presented in the studies of the history of Bialystok intended for the broad masses of readers. In what light have the vicissitudes of Poles, Jews, Belarusians, Russians and Germans living in one city but next to each other rather than to each other been shown by historians? What knowledge about ethnic relations can younger generations of Bialystokers, for whom the twentieth century has become ancient history, draw from popular books? What lessons should we all learn from history to avoid mistakes of our ancestors? My hypothesis is that this aspect of the history is generally presented in a fragmentary way and almost exclusively from the Polish perspective.

The social perception of tangible cultural resources of a city is one of the elements shaping the identity of the city, the collective identification of individuals with their place of residence. The construction of distinctive and coherent identities is an important process for urban communities, as it involves the capacity to convert their cultural resources into capital, both economic and cultural. This process becomes particularly complicated in heterogeneous cities, where representatives of different groups can have diverse, often contradictory, attitudes towards the city in which they reside. In such communities it can become a site of struggle for the symbolic and/or political dominance in the city. The social perception of historical monuments can be seen as a measure of identity construction. The data used in this article are taken primarily from the research 'History and Memory in the communities of Bialystok and Lublin'. It shows that in the case of Bialystok one may speak of the domination of the largest cultural groups over the minorities. A part of the responsibility for this situation falls on the local authorities, who, despite declarations, do not take action that would effectively support the multicultural identity of the city.

Space is one of the most important components, co-creating and legitimizing the basic ranges of identity. The aim of the work is to show the relationship between the spatial identity circles: Europe, Polish, region, city, village, district. The results of the analysis derived from studies conducted among a representative group of students from Bialystok. Through the juxtaposition of pairs of selected space indicated the strongest, weakest and intermediate circles of identity.

(Polish title: Sluchalnosc programów dla mniejszosci narodowych emitowanych przez Polskie Radio Bialystok na podstawie badan audytorium radiowego Instytutu Millward Brown SMG/KRC). National minorities are guaranteed their access to the public media by the Polish law. According to the Act on Radio and Television, the media are required to devote a part of their program to the minorities. A significant number of the population of North-Eastern Poland are Belarusians, Lithuanians and Ukrainians. The Polish Radio Bialystok emits at least a half-hour program in their national languages on daily basis. The article provides an analysis of the minority radio programs broadcast by the Polish Radio Bialystok with the largest listenership in the Podlaski region, as reported by the SMG/KRC research institute.

heterogeneous cities, such as Bialystok, each group may have diferent or even contradictory attitudes toward the urban space. Te purpose of this paper is to examine how this space is seen by Bialystok inhabitants and what are the interpretations of the historical center in the ofcial memory of local authorities as well as in the memories of individuals and various communities of memory.Te analyzed data indicate diferences in social perception of urban space in various ethnic, cultural and political groups. Tese diferences suggest that the city center can be symbolically divided into two qualitatively diferent spaces, one of which, better known and prestigious, is associated with the past of the dominant Polish-Catholic group, while the other is the space less recognized and valued, which implies the past of other cultures. At the borderline of these two spaces, several conficts over space occurred in recent years. Te results suggest that Bialystok lacks a coherent perception of space and intergroup conficts over space may be repeated in the future.

The article deals with the issue of social memory in the two main cities of Eastern Poland: Bialystok and Lublin. The author's major thesis is based on the psychoanalytical concept of dissociation, here used in the context of Jewish history. According to a survey conducted in Bialystok and Lublin, the history of Jews in the two cities is generally accessible but erased from people's memory. The survey findings lead the author to the hypothesis that this state of forgetting is currently changing, for nearly 20% of respondents in each city declared that the places and objects related to the Jewish local history, which had been neglected, were worth being preserved and protected

The article presents research concerning historical memory in micro scale on the example of a monument erected by a Bialystok burgher Konstanty Kozyrski in 1937 in the Jaroszówka area. Although Kozyrski’s foundation assumed the form of a religious artefact, it was not a simple expression of religiousness, or an ordinary request for the care of supernatural forces. First of all, this action was a physical manifestation of the family’s memory and identity which did not correspond to ethnic and religious consciousness of the majority of their neighbours. Moreover, it was an attempt to legitimise the Kozyrskis’ land ownership in the period of the integration action ran by the state authorities in Poland’s twenty years of independence after World War I. The article shows the alienation of the family from the local community: the Kozyrskis were the newcomers, who emphasized their connection with the town, not the country, they were the members of the Orthodox Church, and they stood out economically owing to preferential legislation under Russification run by the Russian Empire.

Bialystok is a culturally diversifed city. Tis fact results in the presence of different cultural groups in the city public space, which at the same time becomes a feld for manifestation of cultural identities, and meeting (or even clashing) of these groups. Resorting to documentary photography, the authoress attempts at observing the instances of multiculturalism in the space of Bialystok in order to create a typology of local intercultural relations. Te laboratory metaphor used in the article refects the dynamic quality of the observed phenomena: diverse cultural groups, reacting one with another as chemical components in a laboratory, constitute the local community with its particular symbols, practices, and problems. Te public space they occupy and make use of is a place of a natural social experiment – the creation of a multicultural social order within the city boundaries

Te inspiration to write this article were studies on the attitudes of tolerance among the inhabitants of Bialystok, completed in August 2013 as a result of the events that took place in the capital of Podlaskie province during the past years. Te severity of the acts of intolerance and high media impact of these acts very negatively afected the image of the city. To counter the intolerant vices, the city commissioned a quantitative study measuring the attitudes of Bialystok citi-zens towards foreigners. Te result of studies was social diagnosis that describes the level of intolerance of Bialystok inhabitants. In this paper the authors pre-sent selected results, focusing in particular on the scale used to measure social distances, which is called Bogardus scale and related indicators probe indigeno-us attitude towards foreigners. Te authors present current and accurate data on the distances to the surveyed social and ethnic groups, and compare them to the corresponding studies from Poland.

The aim of the article is to identify attitudes towards higher education of graduates of high schools in Białystok and to identify the individual and social factors influencing these attitudes. The decision-making model presented in the article included the personal preferences, peer groups, teachers and parents as a factors determining the value of higher education, the criteria of study selection and the expectations associated with them. The decision-making process associated with the choice of an educational path has a nature of investment decisions that are highly unpredictable because of delaying desired outcomes. That’s why the decision-making process of graduates of high schools have to be highly social in nature.
