Opis:
To predict the metallurgical results of industrial plants, laboratory batch flotation tests are carried out, relating both operations through scale-up factors. However, robust scale-up procedures and well-defined laboratory protocols are necessary to reach reliable results at industrial scale. In this paper, results from different flotation batch tests are presented, analysing the effect of batch protocol in terms of operating conditions, operator, ore type, water quality, and others on the metallurgical response. Additionally, the ability of batch responses to describe industrial operations and determine scale-up factors was analysed. Then, a sensitivity analysis was carried out, considering the effect of batch and industrial conditions on the estimation of scale-up factors. Results showed that the batch response significantly changes, depending on the operating conditions, flotation operator, and batch flotation machine, even for the same cell design. Additionally, it was observed that the batch recovery significantly changes when modifying ore type and water quality, which can cause changes in batch and/or industrial operation, affecting the scale-up factors. In addition, results showed that the scale-up factors varied significantly by changing operating conditions in a batch cell. This also occurs in plants when metallurgical performance changes, for example, due to a modification in launder design and/or operating condition, to increase recovery, or due to control limitations that prevent efficient metallurgical performance.

Opis:
This paper presents the analysis of the batch flotation with regard to the size of the floated particles with coal as an example. Empirical studies were conducted on samples of bituminous coal from the Jankowice coal mine (33 type in Polish classification). Experimental includes fractional flotation of coal samples with various particle size, the float and sink analysis of flotation products and determination the ash content in each flotation and densimetric fractions. The evaluation of flotational upgrade was based on the partition curve and value of heterogeneity index (standard deviation) with the division into concentrate and tailings as a measure of flotation efficiency. From the partition curve, partition size, which is assumed in flotation as the maximum size of floatable particles under the given physicochemical conditions, was calculated. On the basis of float and sink analyses, it was found that floated particles are particles with hydrophobic properties corresponding to the density (related to the mineral matter content) below 1.6 Mg/m3. In this connection, the probability of detachment of a particle from a given particle size fractions, was calculated as a relation between the mass of particles with the density below 1.6 Mg/m3 in tailings and the mass of particles with this density in the feed. With the increase in particle size, the de-gree of heterogeneity increases and reaches the maximum value for particle size fractions 0.315–0.4 mm, then decreases for larger particles. The characteristics of the dependence of the degree of heterogeneity on particle size is analogous as in many flotation processes – the dependence of the flotation rate constant flotation on particle size.

Opis:
Micro-flotation and batch flotation tests were carried out on fine (-20 µm) hematite to investigate the influences of non-polar oil when sodium oleate, octyl hydroxamic acid, or oleoyl hydroxamic acid was used as a collector. Both micro-flotation and batch flotation tests were performed using single hematite mineral and/or artificial mixed minerals (hematite:quartz = 1:1), and kerosene was utilized as the neutral oil. The experimental results showed that the addition of a kerosene emulsion benefited hematite recovery in the micro-flotation tests where a froth layer did not exist. In the batch flotation where a froth layer existed, kerosene behaved differently when used in conjunction with the three collectors. Kerosene helped improve the batch flotation when sodium oleate or oleoyl hydroxamic acid was used as a collector. However, it reduced concentrate weight yield, grade and recovery to a noticeable extent when octyl hydroxamic acid was used as a collector, especially at low dosages. In addition, single hematite batch flotation kinetics tests coupled with water recovery measurement were carried out to study the role of kerosene at different collector dosages. It was observed that water drainage and the resulting froth destabilization by kerosene was dominant at low collector dosages, especially in the flotation using octyl hydroxamic acid. At higher collector dosages, the water drainage and froth destabilization effect by kerosene was possibly counter-balanced by the higher hematite surface hydrophobicity and bubble surface tension gradient, which led to more stable froth layer.
