Opis:
The Chelopech epithermal arsenic bearing high-sulphidation, copper-gold deposit located in Bulgaria is often considered as the richest European gold deposit. Selected physicochemical parameters have been measured at key flotation streams inside the processing plant. Sampling campaign has followed with samples being submitted to chemical and mineral liberation analyses. A quantitative analysis has enabled to link copper flotation response to the type of copper bearing minerals and physiochemical parameters such as redox potential (Eh), dissolved oxygen (DO), EDTA extractable Cu and Fe. Data from the mineral liberation analysis (MLA) have highlighted an important process- relevant information explaining the variable floatability in different particle size ranges. A low chalcopyrite recovery can be linked to the non-sufficient amount of dissolved oxygen inside the copper selective flotation. Given the finely-disseminated copper bearing minerals, copper losses due to particle locking could be suggested as well.

Opis:
A new method of synthesis of polymer biocomposites with lignin using the photopolymerization method has been proposed. Bisphenol A glycerolate (1 glycerol/phenol) diacrylate (BAGDA) was used as a main monomer and 2-ethylhexyl acrylate (EHA) as a reactive diluent. Lignin (L) was applied as an eco-filler. The influence of the increasing lignin content (0; 2.5; 5; 10; 20% w/w) on the properties of the obtained biocomposites was investigated. The chemical structure of biomaterials was investigated by the attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR/FT-IR) method while the thermal properties were studied by the differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TG/DTG). Their hardness was measured by the Shore D method. Incorporation of the biopolymer into the structure of polymer composites could be a promising alternative to synthetic materials and would contribute to better lignin utilization. The results of the study are of practical importance in prospective applications of biocomposites with lignin.

Opis:
Given the significant consumption and future demand for water resources, this paper intends to find the conditions for using a flotation process with different water quality. One of the alternatives is using water under secondary treatment with industrial water mixtures to partly recycle domestic wastewater and maximize metallurgical benefits. Results show that using wastewater (only with secondary treatment) in flotation is detrimental to copper recovery. However, molybdenum recovery is significantly improved. For mixtures with 50 [%] wastewater, 50 [ppm] frother, 20 [ppm] collector, and pH 10, copper recovery decrease amounts to 0.4 [%], while molybdenum shows a 2.4 [%] recovery increase. In addition, copper concentrate grade decreases by 1.4 [%], while molybdenum grade remains. Therefore, using wastewater is viable, particularly in the case of molybdenum. So, this study proposes using of water mixtures in the copper depression stage to improve molybdenum recovery.

Opis:
Hydrocarbon contamination in the environment poses a significant challenge, and various control methods have been explored. Soil remediation by flotation has been proposed as an effective approach. This method involves the separation of hydrophobic compounds, such as soil hydrocarbons, by introducing air into a stirred reactor containing the soil pulp designated for remediation. Experiments were conducted using a 5 L Batch flotation cell to evaluate operating conditions. These experiments focused on obtaining flotation kinetics with different organic mixtures, including fine sands measuring under 150 μm. The experimental design encompassed airflow, hydrocarbon concentration, and surfactant dosage. The research utilized a diluted pulp (3% solids) with a high organic concentration (8 and 17 g/L). Flotation kinetics were measured by developing an innovative technique based on pulp color and image processing software. This technique facilitated the tracking of concentration changes over time under Beer-Lambert's Law. Subsequently, the results were adjusted using kinetic models commonly employed in mineral flotation, including the first-order, Kelsall, and Klimpel models. This comprehensive analysis sought to elucidate the underlying phenomenology and assess the potential for industrial-scale implementation. The laboratory findings indicate the possibility of achieving recoveries of up to 87%, with a first-order kinetic constant of 0.7 (1/min). Both the gas flow rate and the addition of surfactant exert substantial influence on this constant, consistent with the observed phenomenology of this study. This study explores the integration of image analysis in flotation for hydrocarbon-contaminated soil remediation. The research aims to optimize remediation strategies by examining variables such as Beer-Lambert's law and prevalent kinetic models. The study focuses on scalable, eco-friendly decontamination methods, emphasizing enhanced process control and comprehension within soil flotation systems.

Opis:
The impact of air distribution on the metallurgical performance of a flotation bank operating with a mineral slurry having a moderate and high frother concentration is assessed. A flotation bank of two and three 5L Denver cells was implemented, and air flow was distributed down the bank as increasing and decreasing profiles. It was observed that when operating the bank configurations with a moderate frother concentration (10 ppm DF 400) the increasing profile provided the highest Cu enrichment ratio at the expense of a slight reduction in Cu recovery. This increase in selectivity was mainly due to a significant reduction in the water recovery and mass-pull in the first cell. When the bank operated with a high frother concentration, i.e., well beyond the CCC, a significant increase in water recovery was observed, producing a significant loss in selectivity that could not be compensated by air profiling.

A new method is proposed for obtaining biocomposites based on a combination of silica and lignin precursors. Amorphous silica was produced by two methods: one based on hydrolysis and condensation of tetraethoxysilane (sol–gel method) and the other involving precipitation in a polar medium. Additionally, the commercial silica known under the name of Syloid®244 was used. The silica surface was modified to ensure better affinity of the support to activated lignin. The biocomposites obtained were carefully characterised by determination of their physicochemical and dispersive–morphological properties. Electrokinetic stability of the biocomposites was evaluated on the basis of zeta potential dependence on pH. Thermal stability of the biocomposites and their porous structure parameters (surface area, pore diameter and pore volume) were established. The results indicate that silica/lignin biocomposites are much promising for application in many areas of science and industry.

The paper presents some application of barium titanate synthesized by different methods. Barium titanate samples were prepared by four procedures: solid state, mechanochemical as direct synthesis and modification as well as hydrothermal and microwave. The obtained samples were systematically studied using X-ray diffraction, nitrogen adsorption, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), potentiometric titration, and quasi-elastic light scattering and zeta potential measurements. The values of pHpzc (point of zero charge) and pHIEP (isoelectric point) characteristic of the electrical double layer were determined. The prepared samples were tested as photocatalysts under visible light. As a result, relationship between the conditions of barium titanate synthesis, its physicochemical and electrokinetic parameters, as well as photocatalytic activity under visible light was first established.

Opis:
The reforming of methane with carbon dioxide is still of great interest due to the ever-increasing demand for synthesis gas and hydrogen. This process makes it possible to use two major gases that are considered harmful to the environment. The main problem for its commercial application is the lack of a catalyst that is both active, selective towards syngas (a mixture of hydrogen and carbon monoxide) and resistant to deactivation by coke deposition. Nickel is the most commonly used metal in methane reforming reactions due to its high activity and reasonable price. But still there is a gap in the literature for research on novel catalysts and their properties modifications devoted to strategies to reduce deactivation of the catalysts caused by the coke formation. In the present work a series of hydroxyapatite supported nickel catalysts promoted by alkali metals (Li, Na, K and Cs) were tested. The surface and structural properties of the catalysts were well characterized by physicochemical methods. Activity and selectivity were measured at 600ºC for 20 hours’ time-on-stream test. Resistance to coking was measured with Magnetic Suspension Balance. The stability of the catalyst was improved by the addition of promoters, which reduced the rate of coking. In particular, the cesium-promoted Ni/HAp catalyst significantly inhibited coke deposition, while slightly reducing methane conversion and selectivity to hydrogen.

Opis:
Bubble size measurements in aerated systems such as froth flotation cells are critical for controlling gas dispersion. Commonly, bubbles are measured by obtaining representative photographs, which are then analyzed using segmentation and identification software tools. Recent developments have focused on enhancing these segmentation tools. However, the main challenges around complex bubble cluster segmentation remain unresolved, while the tools to tackle these challenges have become increasingly complex and computationally expensive. In this work, we propose an alternative solution, circumventing the need for image segmentation and bubble identification. An Artificial Neural Network (ANN) was trained to estimate the Sauter mean bubble size (D32) based on macroscopic image features obtained with simple and inexpensive image analysis. The results showed excellent prediction accuracy, with a correlation coefficient, R, over 0.998 in the testing stage, and without bias in its error distribution. This machine learning tool paves the way for robust and fast estimation of bubble size under complex bubble images, without the need of image segmentation.

In order to study the influence of the carbon precursor on the physicochemical properties of biocarbons there were used the precursors: cones, sawdust, and bark of various tree species. The obtained adsorbents were characterized based on the results, of the N2 adsorption, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), elemental analysis (CHNS), thermogravimetry (TG), derivative thermogravimetry (DTG), and differential thermal analysis (DTA), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy FT-IR (ATR) and the Boehm’s titration method as well as pHpzc (the point of zero charge). The adsorption capacity and the temperature-programmed desorption (TPD) of ammonia were also studied. The obtained activated biocarbons were characterized by the large specific surface area (515 to 1286 m2/g) and the total pore volume (0.27 to 0.46 cm3/g) as well as the well-developed microporous structure (76 - 90%). The maximum NH3 adsorption capacity of the activated biocarbon was determined to be 2.93 mmol/g (FC (Fir Cone)). These results prove that the lignocellulosic precursors are appropriate for preparation of environmentally friendly and cost-effective biocarbons.

Demand for iron ore worldwide has been steadily increasing which leads to the extraction of iron ore deposits with more complex mineralogies and higher levels of silicon and phosphorus impurities. This is the case in Algeria with the iron ore deposit of Gara Djebilet, Tindouf; where it has recently been exploited to ensure the sufficiency of iron ore required to produce iron and steel products. This deposit has remained unexploited for several decades due to inadequate knowledge of its mineralogy, treatment, and economic assessments. This study aims to find out the microstructure, chemical composition, and mineralogical distribution of valuable minerals and impurities, to understand the efficient processing methods for this specific iron ore. The characterization of representative ironstone samples taken from the studied area was carried out using optical microscopy, X-ray fluorescence spectrometer (XRF), petrographic microscope, X-ray diffractometer (XRD), and scanning electron microscope (SEM) coupled with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). The results of the mineralogical analyses confirmed that it is an oolitic fine-grained ore consisting of gangue minerals principally composed of quartz, apatite, and iron-rich concentric cored structures. Chemical analyses of the ore indicated that it contains 56.58 wt% Fe with 7.98 wt% SiO2, 7.09 wt% Al2O3, and minor amounts of P2O5, CaO, MgO, and TiO2 compounds. The phosphorus associated was present in both ooids and groundmass, indicating that the ore has a complex texture with very rich and diverse mineralogy. For that, two conceptual scenarios were potentially proposed for processing the studied iron ore, while further detailed automated mineralogical information was required to make sure about the processing units from a practical perspective.

The representative of natural layered clays, bentonite, was modified according to two routes and tested as a new catalyst for selective catalytic reduction of nitrogen oxides with ammonia (NH3-SCR). The natural acid-activated clay was ion-exchanged with Na+ or remained in H-form and pillared with metal oxides. In order to limit the number of synthesis steps, iron as an active phase was introduced simultaneously with Al2O3 during the intercalation procedure. Additionally, the samples were doped with 0.5 wt% of copper to promote low-temperature activity. It was found that the performed modifications resulted in disorganization of the ordered layered arrangement of bentonite. Nevertheless, acid activation and pillaring improved structural and textural parameters. The results of catalytic tests indicated that the samples containing Fe2O3 pillars promoted with Cu exhibited the highest NO conversion of 85% at 250°C (H-Bent-AlFe-Cu) and 75% at 300°C (Na-Bent-AlFe-Cu). What is important, activity of the protonated samples in the high-temperature region was noticeably affected by the side reaction of ammonia oxidation, correlated with the production of NO and resulting in N2O emission during the process comparing to Na-Bentonite catalysts.

Supported liquids membranes are very promising products. They have been intensively inves-tigated in last two decades and widely used in many technologies especially in gas separation and purifi-cation processes. A key aspect in obtaining satisfying effectiveness and long membrane lifetime is a proper choice of ionic liquid and polymeric or ceramic support. Properties of both affect the processes of obtaining useful supported ionic liquid membranes. In comparison to polymeric membranes, ceramic ones are slightly thicker, however they are thermally and mechanically more stable. Our research was aimed at sintering fine glass particles of 500 to 45 μm in size in order to prepare porous membranes which can be used as supports for liquid membranes. Dextrin and borax were used as pore-making agents. The membranes, as disks 35 mm in diameter and 3 mm of thickness, were prepared. The porosity was determined using absorption method. It was found, that the porosity could be controlled by changing the applied pressure from 1 to 5 MPa, particle size distribution, sintering temperature, type and amount of pore-enhancing agents.

HAP composite with white clay was prepared and studied using X-ray diffraction, nitrogen adsorption, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), potentiometric titration, and quasi-elastic light scattering and zeta potential measurements. The values of pHpzc (point of zero charge) and pHIEP (isoelectric point) which characterize the electrical double layer depend strongly on the white clay addition to HAP. Comparative studies of hydroxyapatite, white clay and composite using nitrogen adsorption and FTIR methods showed that in most cases composite has the properties nearly intermediate between hydroxyapatite and white clay taken for the synthesis; however, certain non- additivity was observed analyzing the properties, due to precipitation of HAP onto clay particles that changes the HAP formation conditions in comparison to HAP formation alone. Thus, changes in the condition of the composite preparation allow one to control the properties of the final materials.

This research is focused on the physicochemical effects caused by selected clay nanoparticles (bentonite, halloysite, montmorillonites) interacting with PS and changing its original surface activity. Using three measuring methods (pulsating bubble technique, Langmuir balance and drop shape analysis), we demonstrated the influence of different mineral nanoparticles on the dynamic surface tension of animal-derived PS material (Survanta®) and main surfactant phospholipid (DPPC). The results which are dependent on material properties and concentration allow to hypothesize possible pathways of health effects from inhalation of mineral nanoparticles. This may help to set the guidelines in defining occupational safety standards and methods of protection of the respiratory system against inhaled mineral dusts.
