Opis:
The authors of this article discuss how the works of Hermann Stehr (1864–1940), a German writer from Silesia, were received. An author, who – like Gerhart Hauptmann – stayed in Germany after the national socialists took over. That fact affected the reception of his writing: to this day, he is considered as a representative of the so-colled ‘literature of blood and land’, which the Nazis perceived as expression of „German spirit”. This article presents Stehr’s literary works from various perspectives. It shows the tragedy of the author making political choices in times, when an individual, even the most prominent, was subjected to totalitarian processes of unification and de-individualization.

Opis:
Polish Deception of Hans Lipinsky-Gottersdorf Hans Lipinsky-Gottersdorf (1920–1991), a wrongly forgotten writer from Silesia, never aroused major interest in the country or abroad. Also in Poland, he is not a commonly known author. The article discusses the modest Polish reception of the writer, starting from 1960s until present. At the beginning, it consisted of mere mentions in the press; it was only later that first sparse translations of his prose appeared together with separate articles devoted to the writer, as well as scientific studies. So far, the only monograph of Lipinsky-Gottersdorf has been written by a Polish Germanist in the German language, and published in Germany.

How to translate culture? The select fragments of the Polish and English translations of the short story Der Sandmann by E.T.A Hoffmann The article discusses the problems encountered by the translator when trying to convey the meaning of the source literary text into the target language. The analysed texts are fragments of the Polish and English translations of the short story Der Sandmann by E.T.A. Hoffmann, the leading representative of late German Romanticism, with the special attention paid to their correspondence with the source text. The analysed translations are the Polish one by Felicjan Faleński, made in 1867 and the English one by John Oxenford, made in 1844. For the purpose of analysing the text, the article employs Todorov’s theory of the fantastic for building an interpretation model of the Romantic short story Der Sandmann.

The aim of this article is to outline the phenomenon of the Polish-German border in 1919 and 1922 in the context of Imagination and Emotionalizing. Although the presentation platform – approximating the specificity of administrative-political lines separating Poland and Germany in the last century – introduces the recall of historical contexts, the primary tasks of the analyzes contain drawing conclusions from exploration, made in the area of broadly understood literature and journalism, showing the extent of the use of affective potentials related to the Polish-German border.

Opis:
In orbe theatrum Grafenortis. Karl von Holtei and Grafenort The article presents biographical and artistic connection between Breslau-born, well-known German writer and actor Karl von Holtei (1798-1880) with Grafenort in Lower Silesia. This relation started on autumn 1816 when he debuted in the palace theater of Count Johann Hieronymus von Herberstein. The count became his long-term patron. At that time Holtei met his first wife Luise Rogée, an actress of famous Hoftheater in Berlin. For many years, Holtei was a travelling artist and visited Grafenort very often performing and running the theatre. Also here, he wrote his first poems in the Silesian language. The best known works connected with Grafenort are Briefe aus und nach Grafenort and autobiography Vierzig Jahre where he collected his memories from Grafenort. In 2012, Grafenort Palace Foundation was established. The Foundation’s goal is to rebuild palace, which will be cultural centre of the region. Thanks to Foundation’s activities, the memory of Karl von Holtei is still alive in Grafenort, e. g. Hultaj Music Festival was organized in September 2018.

Opis:
The article deals with the oeuvre of Karl Dedecius, including his translation work as well as his literary criticism and editing. In the history of Polish-German cultural transfer, Dedecius was one of the most prominent actors and organizers. After WWII he has become a forerunner of German-Polish reconciliation. He was the head of the Deutsches Polen-Institut in Darmstadt, which largely prepared the public opinion in West Germany for a normalization of the political relations with Poland after the 1989–90 breakthrough. Today, he is considered the greatest ambassador of Polish literature in the German-speaking countries in the 20th century. The article has been written to mark the centenary of his birth.
