Opis:
This paper proposed an image feature extraction method for laser welding molten pool inspection based on cellular neural network. TC4 titanium alloy thin plates were welded by Nd:YAG pulsed laser. A coaxial machine vision system was designed to acquire molten pool images. An auxiliary lighting source was employed to improve the molten pool image quality. By analyzing molten pool images, the welding defects such as fenestration or insufficient depth were identified. These results can be used as a feedback signal for laser power control. Experimental results showed that the proposed method can be used to improve laser welding quality.

Opis:
The effect of initial frequency chirp is numerically investigated to obtain high-efficient supercontinuum radiation in photonic crystal fibers with two closely spaced zero-dispersion wavelengths. Our results show that the positive chirp can significantly improve the probability of energy transferred from the soliton to the dispersive wave. And with the increase of the chirp, the energy increases obviously. At the same time, the intensity of the dispersive wave is proportional to the chirp value. Especially, solitons will not appear when the chirp value exceeds 3.9. Therefore, choosing an appropriate positive chirp, we can regulate the energy of the dispersive wave and solitons in photonic crystal fibers.

Opis:
A new design of a guiding-index photonic crystal fiber which possesses a beam shaping effect and flexible control of dispersion has been proposed in this paper. It can shape a Gaussian beam into a circular hollow beam with certain dimension, which can be used in optical communication systems with a Cassegrain antenna to improve transmission efficiency by avoiding the loss of energy caused by the subreflector center reflection. In addition, its dispersion and confinement loss can be changed in a broad range by slightly adjusting structural parameters under condition that the hollow beam dimension remains about the same. Fairly practical properties, zero dispersion or flattened dispersion, can be obtained when structural parameters are set appropriately. A series of models with different parameters are analyzed and compared. Results of numerical simulation show that the ultra-low dispersion of 1.802 ps/km/nm can be obtained when λ = 1.31 μm. Several modest design parameters are given as well.

Opis:
A structure of a solar concentrating reflector is designed in this paper to improve the usage of solar energy. For the dark image which is the result of the secondary mirror in the new type of the Cassegrain solar concentrating system, a double pyramid system is used to improve this phenomenon. By eliminating the dark image, the system enhanced the concentration ratio and the working efficiency. Meanwhile, both the primary and secondary mirrors are shaped into a square section in order to get a better match with a square photovoltaic receiver. While the length of the primary mirror is 89m and the block ratio is 20%, the concentration ratio is equal to 118.86.

Opis:
In order to simplify the optical setup and the encryption process, a diffractive-imaging-based optical encryption system using a single diffraction pattern is proposed. A predesigned binary mask is placed before the plaintext in the encryption process, and three randomly distributed phase only masks are placed in the optical path. Only one diffraction pattern needs to be recorded as ciphertext by CCD. In the decryption process, an iterative phase retrieval algorithm is applied, in which the predesigned binary mask acts as a support constraint in the input plane. After the iterative process, an interpolation operation for the zero-valued pixels is also implemented. The effectiveness and robustness of the proposal are demonstrated by numerical simulation results.

Opis:
In this work, thermal regeneration of fiber Bragg gratings inscribed in single-mode fibers, two-mode step index fibers and four-mode step index fibers is performed, where the single-mode fibers are used as the reference in the analysis. Specifically, we investigate the behavior of the thermal decay, recovery and eventually the permanent erasure of the gratings in the temperature range from 25 to 1300°C. In the domain of demarcation energy, the thermal responses of the gratings can be normalized and they share similar characteristic curves despite the different temperature ramping rates used in the annealing treatment. It is found that the demarcation energy at the regeneration point and the attempt-to-escape frequency for each grating can be associated with the confinement factors of the fibers. The finding in this work has provided a new insight in the manufacture of regenerated fiber Bragg grating sensors by using few-mode fibers for multiparameter sensing in high temperature environments.

Opis:
The scratch on a fused silica surface was treated as a chain of connected damage sites and mitigated one after another using CO2 laser irradiation. The optical microscopy image shows that a scratch with the width of about 30 μm and length of several millimeters can be completely mitigated without the formation of debris and bubbles. The mitigated scratch can survive under raster scan laser irradiation with the fluency increased up to 11.0J/cm2 at 3ns and 351nm. On the contrary, the substrate without CO2 laser mitigation is seriously damaged under this irradiation. The light modulation induced by mitigation is much smaller when the scratch is mitigated before being damaged. The light modulation is about 2 when the distance to the mitigated sample is larger than 20cm. The birefringence induced by residual stress in the mitigated scratch is measured. The retardance of the mitigated scratch before being damaged is not visible. Therefore, residual stress in this mitigated scratch before being damaged should be not a critical potential risk in laser damage.
