    Polish‑Lithuanian Commonwealth in English corantos (1620‑1642)The article discusses news reports from or dealing with Polish‑Lithuanian Commonwealth published in English corantos in the 1620s and 1630s. Analysis of news items published in corantos, their content, number, etc. show that corantos’ publishers and English readers were especially interested in military and political news, for example on Polish‑Turkish and Polish‑Swedish conflicts, and internal political situation including Sigismund III’s relations with the opposition, and some of the reports were very detailed and reliable. The large numbers of reports datelined from Vienna, Prague and Silesia and the wide international context of Polish news could have resulted from the fact that the situation in the Habsburg dominions was in the focus of English readers’ interest. The presence of Polish news in the corantos proves also that by the 1620s, in spite of all possible impediments, Poland‑Lithuania was already a part of the larger pan‑European system consisting of interfacing networks making it possible to transmit news on a pretty regular basis from one part of the Continent to another.

    The Collection of George Thomason (1640–1660). History, Contents and ImportanceThe text presents the history and research possibilities provided by a unique collection of books, prints, newspapers and manuscripts gathered by the 17th–century London bookseller George Thomason. Known also as the Thomason Tracts, the collection, containing over 20 000 items, is one of the most important assemblies of primary sources from the period of the Civil War and Interregnum and has been extensively used by historians. The article also argues that due to Thomason’s diligence in collecting early periodical publications and the fact that the Thomason Tracts have been preserved almost intact they are of key importance for anyone planning to conduct research on the history of early English newspapers and journalism.

    W lutym 1633 r. dwudziestojednoletni Janusz Radziwiłł, syn księcia Krzysztofa Radziwiłła, przybył do Londynu z misją dyplomatyczną zleconą mu przez nowego polskiego władcę Władysława IV. Jej przebieg oraz pozostałe szczegóły pobytu młodego magnata w Anglii nie były dotychczas zbyt dobrze znane. Dzięki analizie nowych polskich i angielskich źródeł jest jednak możliwe ich szczegółowe odtworzenie, a zebrany materiał jednoznacznie wskazuje, że pobyt młodego Radziwiłła w Londynie miał nie tylko stricte ceremonialny charakter i powinien być interpretowany jako jeden z przejawów aktywizacji polityki zagranicznej przez nowego monarchę oraz znaczenia rodu Radziwiłłów na arenie międzynarodowej.
    In February 1633, the twenty-one-year-old Janusz Radziwiłł, son of Krzysztof Radziwiłł, arrived in London as an ambassador of the newly-elected Polish King Władysław IV. The specifics of the mission and the young magnate’s stay in England have not hitherto been well researched. Still, thanks to the analysis of new Polish and English primary sources it is now possible to reconstruct them in detail. This material clearly indicates that the young Radziwiłł’s stay in London was not of only strictly ceremonial nature, but it should be interpreted as a manifestation of the new Polish ruler’s active approach to foreign policy, as well as of the importance of the Radziwiłł family in the international arena.
