The CD entitled “Monuments of Wooden Architecture in the Voivodeship in Podlasie” is a combination of newest visual techniques and concrete knowledge, supplemented with photographs of architectural objects and ethnic music. The authors of the texts and photographs are the staff members of the Regional Center for the Study and Documentation of Historical Monuments in Białystok. The prime topic of “Wooden Architecture in Szydłów”, a study by Edward Traczyński transferred onto a CD, is the traditional architecture of Szydłów and, in particular, residential and farm buildings. The supplementary photographs from the 1970s and contemporary, make it possible to compare changes in the state of the preservation of local wooden architecture.

Opis:
The fire o f the mid-17th century wooden church at Zabełków, in the region of Opole Silesia was a note of alarm which has again brought into relief the urgency of the problem of fire-protection of historical monuments, especially, the wooden ones. The economic transformations taking place in this country for some years past account for the fact that the wooden monuments of laic architecture w ill scon be a rarity in the provinces. The situation is different, however, as regards such monuments of sacral architecture (ca 1630 churches and 450 bell-towers) still used for religious worship purposes and, thus, as socially useful, having better prospects for their preservation, in situ. The major part of loses in wooden monuments, substained after the conclusion of the Second World War, were caused by fires due to various defects in electrical and lightning conductor installation, its incorrect handling and lack of proper maintenance. Nevertheless, the mere knowledge of the causes of fires it not tantamount to elimination of the losses caused by them. What is also necessary is knowledge o f the ways of preventing and fighting fires. It was piecisely for the purpose of dissemination of that knowledge that PAX Publishers issued, in 1974, the booklet entitled: Pożary kościołów i kaplic (Fires of Churches and Chapels). Its author, Stanisław Pągowski, Colonel of the Fire Brigade, gives in the last chapter the legal regulations binding in this country in the sphere of fire protection. It seems advisable that a part of the impression of that book be purchased by the General Conservator’s Office and circulated among the users of wooden monuments. Moreover, a long-range programme for protection of the wooden monuments of sacral architecture should be prepared jointly by the Museums and Monument Preservation Board, the relevant Committee o f the Polish Episcopate and the Command of the Fire-Brigade. The other requirements are: intensification of systematic inspection of the electrical and lightning conductor installations, providing the historical monuments with fire-detection and fire-control devices and a planned survey of historical monuments, with special consideration of those built of wood.

Opis:
In the south-eastern part of vaivodship of Lublin, and, to be more accurate, within the areas of Tomaszów and Hrubieszów districts and partly in Zamość district may be encountered a group of timber-constructed Uniate orthodox churches characteristic of their specific architectural features which are greatly differing from those present in architecture of orthodox churches in the neighbouring areas. The most ancient sacred buildings of that group are dating from the mid-seventeenth century while those most recently built, from the years ending the nineteenth century. They all were erected as those clearly divided into three parts in their general plans, namely that of sanctuary, nave and a part designed for the feminine worshipers and, in addition, with a strong emphasis on the nave forming both in plan and in the outer shape of the whole building its clearly discernible central portion. The above Uniate orthodox churches are, furthermore, characteristic of considerable heights of their outer walls which the impression cannot be obscured even by a strong enough horizontal accent formed by the overhanging eaves running around the building. Due to the separate roofings applied in all the three main portions of the building and having the shape о-f three domes or a dome crowning the nave and two gable roofs covering the two remaining parts and also owing to the strictly observed rule that the nave should always dominate over the other two portions have been more still emphasised not only the central nucleus and the symmetry of the whole structure but, at the same time, through this perpendicular accentuation of its separate portions was considerably strengthened an impression of its height. Both magnitude, but at the same time a certain tallness of solids of these Uniate orthodox churches seem to be even more striking features in the triple-dome buildings. For special attention deserve the two different, with concern to height, ways that were usually applied for shaping 'of carcasses of these sacred buildings which are either differentiated, i.e. these of nave walls are higher and thus dominating over those of the other two portions (normally having the same heights), or are of the same height in all the three portions of the building and are ending with a common cornice. Buildings in their first version are mainly to be found in the area of Tomaszów district and the so designed objects exibit an unbroken traditional continuity in their forms dating from the mid-seventeenth century until the first quarter of the nineteenth century. Designs representing the second version are grouped in the area of Hrubieszów district and their preserved and well known examples are dating from the nineteenth century. The burnt-down (due to the faulty electrical installation) Uniate orhodox church at Hulcze (erected in 1869) constituted one of the outstanding examples of the „Hrubieszów versionb of that group. The until now gathered documentation allows to state that the territorial range of the timber-constructed Uniate orthodox churches belonging to Tomaszów-Hrubieszów group is covering the territory of the neighbouring deanships of the former Uniate diocese of Chełm and also that the local building tradition was continued throughout the period from the first half of the 17th century until the years ending the 19th century. This tradition must have been one strong enough if even after the abolition in (1875 by the tzarist authorities of the Uniate diocese and after introducing of the orthodox rite lit was able to prevent the penetration of foreign influences which the fact is apparently evidenced by orthodox churches erected after 1875 and planned for the Russian-type liturgy who, however, preserved their former character.

Opis:
The village Kosieczyn near Zbąszynek (Lubusz voivodeship) features the Saint Apostles Simon and Jude Thaddeus wooden church that ranks among Poland’s oldest monuments of wooden sacred architecture. Dendrological analyses completed in 2006 enabled to certify that the church (preserved within its body, i.e. the body of nave and chancel) has a log structure based on pine beams, built in 1389; roof truss system over the nave and chancel made of timber cut sometime between 1407 and 1416, hence it is dated at 1417; the tower added in 1431. Research confirmed that the object was consecrated in 1408. In order to fully identify the initial period of the existence of the church, conservation efforts were launched to determine the scope and specific features of paintings discovered in its interiors. Traces of template ornaments originating from the late Middle Ages are preserved on the walls of chancel and nave (heavily damaged by the saturating of beams to improve the adherence of clay pugging, used to cover the walls from inside the church) and on boards from dismantled ceiling (again used in the church). These discoveries determined the continuation of renovation works in further years, performed simultaneously with operations aimed at improving the technical condition of the building. The past transformations of the building, among other the replacing of original ceilings above the chancel and nave with wooden pseudo-vault and newly structured windows larger than the original, located in the upper parts of walls also on the northern side, have destabilised the structure of the church and augmented the deviations of its walls from the perpendicular. The structural transformations and lack of current renovations are the causative factors of the serious weakening of the log structure. Extensive repairs and renovation operations were launched in 2006. Firstly, the structure of the building was stabilised using a system of supports consisting of steel cables suspended above the arched ceilings, to relieve the vertical pressure of the roof truss system on the walls. It enabled to remove the unaesthetic supports and safeguards (steel buttresses at southern side of church, placed in the 1950s). The virtue of the adopted solution rests in its technical efficiency, easy monitoring, full reversibility and absence of any direct modification of the historical substance of the church. In the next years the roof coverings were replaced with shingles, damaged structural elements were replaced as well, apart from filling and repairs. Also, external formworks were replaced with new, horizontally placed timber frames, reminiscent of the log structure of walls. Secondary wooden panellings, plasters and pugging were removed from the interiors, to expose the original wall structure with the relics of its painted ornaments (conservation works were carried out and the colour of interiors was unified). The floor level was lowered to its original usable level, finishing the floor in accordance with the design of discovered ceramic floor finish. Also, the original structure of windows and the entrance in the southern wall were restated. Non-original window openings on the northern side were closed, while on the southern side windows again appeared in their original spots. Additionally, the ceiling above the chancel was recreated together with the stenciled decoration, thus recreating the former appearance of church interiors. Works in the church were completed by renovating its movable elements, namely the main and side altars, pulpit, confessional, crucifix and statues of saints. The very early time of erecting, unique timber structure, as well as the preserved original body and architectural design, in addition to the decoration and fittings of the church, all determine its outstanding artistic, historical and scientific value. The works carried out in 2006-2012 restored the church to its almost completely original state. Also, its structure has been stabilised, in accordance with the original.
