Opis:
The voivodeship of Silesia contains more than a half of Polish monuments of technology, comprising the local cultural landscape and decisive for the identity of the region. Unfortunately, industrial monuments continue to be insufficiently appreciated and protected, and the technical degradation of old post-industrial buildings progresses at a disturbingly rapid rate. This is the reason why the publication Zabytki techniki Śląska. Przewodnik po wybranych obiektach (The Monuments of Technology in Silesia. A Guide to Select Objects) is regarded as extremely apt and necessary. The guidebook contains a list of 112 objects in 47 localities. Each of the entries (also in English and German) provides historical data about industrial enterprises. The authors discuss assorted branches of industry: ironworks, mines, textile works, breweries, the railway, etc., and outline the biographies of the creators of Silesian industry. The presented publication is the first attempt at identifying the varied monuments of technology in the voivodeship of Silesia, and comprises an important element in the preparation of a programme of industrial tourism, which for many objects could be the only chance of survival.

Opis:
Problems of technical monuments in the Lower Silesia were the subject matter for a working symposium organised by the Institute of the History of Architecture, Science and Technology at the Higher School of Engineering in Wroclaw upon the request of the Main Board for Museums and Monuments Protection attached to the Ministry of Culture and Science. The programme of the symposium envisaged also a discussion of organisational and training problems associated with the preservation of monuments of engineering in the whole country. The meeting was attended by representatives of the Institute of the History of Material Culture of the Polish Academy of Sciences, the Institute of the History of Architecture, Arts and Technology of the Wroclaw Higher School of Engineering, the Supreme Technical Organisation (NOT), the Technical Museum and also by district monuments conservators from the Lower Silesia. An important place in the discussions was occupied by organisational problems including the question of training the specialists who would deal with the protection of technological monuments in Poland. A number of important problems were raised, to mention only the need for the preparation of personnel qualified to carry out studies, to draw the necessary documentation for this group of monuments and to fully recognize the resources. It was agreed that the Institute of the History of Material Culture attached to the Polish Academy of Sciences should be a leading organisation in solving the problems of monuments of engineering and coordinating works in this field. There exists also a need to record monuments of technology by specialized teams. Of utmost importance is also the task to popularize technical culture and technological monuments in the society.

La méthode de rentoilage s u r tissus de verres avec l’emploi de la cire résineuse qui fu t appliquée avec un ré su lta t satisfaisant à l’Atelier de conservation des peintures au Musée d e Lublin dans le traitem en t de conservation d’un p o rtra it d u ΧΙΧ-e siècle, est ju sq u ’à présent re la tivement la mieux élaborée. La p e in tu re de Makowski „Fête des. Enfants” (1931) étan t donné sa structure technique n ettem en t spécifique, exigeait, d’autres méthodes q u ’il a fallu m e ttre au point pour exécuter son rentoilage. S u r ce tab le au peint à sec, d’une fac ture v a ria ble, où à coté des empattements épais l’a rtiste avait laissé des fragments non peints de la toile du fond ou les reco u v ra it de „glacis” tran sp a ren t, la conservation de la couleur n atu re lle du tissu constitu a it l’une des conditions principales du programme des traitements de conservation. Après toute une série d’essais ayant pour but l'application des liants traditionnels e t des résines artificielles, l’emploi de la colle de farine de froment avec une légère addition de térébenthine vénitienne fut reconnue comme le meilleur des traitements. Deux couches de gaze en stylon collées et séchées jouent assez bien le rôle de couche de protection, grâce à leur tran sp a rence p erme ttant de lire les écrits au revers du tableau. Elles sont aussi faciles à enlever. Afin de réduire l’influence de l’humidité de l’atmosphère, la gaze a été enduite d ’une couche trè s mince de pate composée de cire et de baume canadien en to luène. L ’é ta t général du tableau avant la conservation é ta it trè s mauvais: une humidification de longue durée d e la p a rtie droite du tableau conditionna l’usure de la toile du fond e t des perte s de matière dans sa structure ; la colle animale dont fu t recouv e rt le tissu subit des boursouflures e t un délavage partiel, ce qui provoqua une p e rte d’adhésion de la couche picturale au support et sa dégradation. On a constaté des trac es de moisissure infectant le revers d u tableau. Les traitements de conservation — o u tre le ren toilage décrit ci-dessus ------ consistaient à désinfecte r le revers du tableau à l’àide du parachlorometacrésol à 0,5°/» dissolu dans le toluène, à protéger les bords des fragments écaillés p a r une solution d ’alcool polyvinylique et à renforcer l’adhérence de la peinture à la toile par la régénération de la colle, après avoir préalablement contrôlé la sensibilité du tissu à l’humidité, enfin ils consistaient à compléter les couleurs qui, pour les différencier de l’original, fu ren t étalées sur une couche de prépa ra tion teintée de la couleur de la toile e t d’une couleur de finissage à base d u liant d ’huile résineuse ou d’agglutin a n t d’aquarelle sur les parties minces du glacis. Dans ce tab leau mis en exposition depuis 1963 on n ’a pas constaté de changements visibles dans la lisibilité des écrits ou dans l’adhérence du ren to ilage à la toile.

This publication takes an academic form. The first part contains an anniversary address by Marian Szeliński, head of the National Club of Enthusiasts of History and Historical Objects of Transport, which is devoted to the history and events of the association over the a period of ten years. The second part consists of five papers which present the problems of developing road and public transportation networks, profiles of the people who serve in the development of transport and aspects of actively protecting historic objects of transportation. The third part surveys around 200 historical objects of transportation technology, divided into 18 groups. This part was prepared on the basis of information that was sought out and gathered by members of the Club. There are three appendices which supplement the publication: photographs of selected objects, an alphabetical list of the authors who collected information about the objects which were described in the survey, and a list of the places where the objects are located. One may say with absolute certainty that those who are fond of older transport technology and those who are professionally involved in the subject will find interesting information in this publication.

The article is a continuation of the author’s Dziedzictwo techniki jako cząstka kultury. Część I. W nurcie rozwoju zrównoważonego (The Heritage of Technology as a Particle of Culture. Part I. Within the Sustainable Development Current, ”Ochrona Zabytków”, no. 4/2008, pp. 60-84). Mention is made of the transformation inaugurated in Poland at the beginning of the 1990s and resulting in the emergence of useless post-industrial resources, the liquidation of state agricultural enterprises (PGR) as well as the appearance of vacant buildings due to the restructuralisation of the Armed Forces of the Polish Republic and the Polish State Rail, often encompassing monuments and sites listed in the register of historical monuments. The prime part of the article is a presentation of a monument-related analysis assessing historical monuments of technology, especially the immovable variant, based on a canon of 12 defined values comprising a set of cultural values (social identity, authenticity, integrity, uniqueness, historical and artistic value) pertaining to the past of the given heritage resource, and a collection of socioeconomic values (social usefulness, functional sustainability, economical, educational, aesthetic and political value) expressing contemporary reality as well as anticipating the requirements of future generations. Special attention has been devoted to questions that up to now have been appearing incidentally in the Polish valorisation of technological culture, such as the assorted aspects of social identity, aesthetics and politics. Moreover, the author proposed an additional value of special importance (e.g. the world of creative ingenuity; an illustration of important transformations in the development of technology, industry and engineering; exceptional evidence of technical artisan tradition, existing in present-day or past socioeconomic formations; an outstanding instance of a complex of technical objects or an industrial landscape, illustrating a meaningful stage in local or regional economic history; an essential component of the cultural diversity of a location or a landscape; a special example of the utilisation of natural resources, typical for a given site threatened with irreversible changes), in this way guaranteeing the open character of the proposed methods in contrast to a certain limited arbitrariness of specialist assessments, based on only three values mentioned in the Polish statute on the protection of historical monuments, i.e. historical, artistic and scientific. The article contains numerous interpretation examples from the Polish resources of historical buildings and complexes. The author introduced the concept of the stakeholders of technological heritage and discussed their potential interest in conservation as part of projects for revitalisation, renovation and revalorisation. While doing so, he indicated the crucial factors of impact upon attitudes or views concerning heritage resources, such as the perception of the values of cultural property, pertinent knowledge, a willingness to become acquainted with them or, on the contrary, a dislike of the past and a tendency to ignore its various issues. Mention has been made of fundamental international documents concerning stands in relation to the preservation of the technological heritage. An interpretation of the values of such heritage resources has been referred to the so-called three pillars of sustainable development, adding a fourth one, namely, culture. The author also suggested a list of twenty indicators of the evaluation of a sustainable conservation project. Upon the basis of the strategic targets of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee (the so-called ”5Cs” conception) the article ends with the formulation of five postulates for rendering the Polish system of the protection of technological monuments more efficient.

Zespół młynów na Wieczystej, do 1943 roku przysiółku wsi Rakowice, dziś przedmieściu Krakowa, zbudowała u progu lat 20. XX wieku spółka należąca do rodziny Wasserbergerów. Architektura przemysłowa obiektu nie niosła najwyższych wartości, była ściśle podporządkowana funkcjonowaniu jednego z największych młynów w II RP. Zakłady kilkakrotnie płonęły, były przebudowywane pod dyktando zmieniających się wymogów technologicznych. W roku 2002 produkcję przeniesiono do nowego zakładu. Stary młyn sprzedano spółce zamierzającej przekształcić teren w strefę budownictwa mieszkalnego, z wykorzystaniem i zachowaniem murów starszej części młyna. Młyna, który mimo swoich nie najwyższych walorów zabytkowych wrósł przez lata w pejzaż wschodniej strony miasta, stając się powszechnie rozpoznawanym znakiem tożsamości Wieczystej. Część niniejszego tekstu autor poświęcił niesłusznie zapomnianej rodzinie żydowskich przedsiębiorców i filantropów, których młyn był własnością.
The complex of mills in the Wieczysta district, up to 1943 a hamlet of Rakowice village, currently the outskirts of Krakow, was built in the early 1920s by a company belonging to the Wasserberger family. Industrial architecture of the facility did not convey any outstanding values, as it was strictly subordinated to the operation of one of the largest mills in the Second Republic of Poland. The plant suffered from several fires and was redeveloped to suit changing technological requirements. In 2002, the production was transferred to a new plant. The old mill was sold to a company intending to transform this area into a residential complex, however preserving and using the walls of older parts of the mill. Although its historical values do not measure up to top ranks, the mill has rooted in the landscape of the eastern part of the city over the years, thus becoming a widely recognised symbol of Wieczysta’s identity. Parts of this text are devoted to the undeservedly forgotten family of Jewish entrepreneurs and philanthropists who once owned the mill.
