Opis:
Two cultural events connected with Mazovia: the “Open gardens” civic initiative, involving a number of towns from the environs of Warsaw, and the “Neighbours for neighbours” festival held in the Praga district of Warsaw were the winners of the Prize of the Foundation for the Development of Local Democracy. Both took part in a competition for the Prize of the Foundation, organised under the patronage of the Minister of Culture and National Heritage and the Polish UNESCO Committee. The awards were granted for particular cultural accomplishments in 2005-2008, which in an outstanding way contributed to the reinforcement of local bonds and traditions and the activisation of residents. The prize was presented in two categories: self-government cultural institutions and non- -government organisations and civic groups. In the latter category two projects were awarded ex aequo, i.a to the “Open gardens” civic initiative. The contestants also received disictinctions and diplomas, and one the distinguished participants was the “Neighbours for neighbours” festival. The ceremony of presenting the prizes, held in Warsaw on 17 February 2009, was accompanied by a conference on “Culture and local tradition as the basis of cooperation, the development of local activity and inspiration for local patriotism”. The “Open gardens” civic initiative gathers localities whose plans refer to the “town-garden” idea. The festival makes the residents aware of the need for promoting their locality as well as the protection of historical space, architecture, Nature and specific atmosphere, different from bustle of the large metropolis. The ”Neighbours for neighbours’ festival took place in 2202- 2206 in the district of Praga North. Not only did it create a new artistic image of the district, but also it drew attention to the need for the protection and preservation of this original part of the capital. A significant and joint aspect of both undertakings was resorting to local tradition and culture as well as a special dialogue on the value of local space – factors duly appreciated by the Prize Chapter.
