odnowa Wawelu

Opis:
Andrzej Fischinger worked for 50 years in the Royal Collection at Wawel. He began his work while he was still a student of art history at the Jagiellonian University. At first, from 1948, he worked in the Educational Section, and later became the curator of the Crown Treasure and Goldsmithing Section, and later the head cataloguer. In 1990, he assumed the function of vicedirector and the function of conservator at Wawel. He fulfilled these duties until his retirement in 1997, but even after that he watched over the progress of renovation work, which was being carried out according to his program. Thanks to him, a full renovation of the cathedral and castle on Wawel were completed. Fischinger felt that conservation must be done in its entirety, based on multi-dimensional scientific research, under the watch of artists and society in a fight to preserve national heritage, as opposed to superficial and shoddy reconstruction. He treated his work as a kind of mission which he fulfilled all his life. In Fischinger’s rich legacy, issues of cataloging and conservation occupy prominent places. His achievements were recognized and appreciated. He received the Knight’s Cross, the Officer’s Cross, and the Commodore’s Cross of the Rebirth of Poland, and many other orders and awards. He was active in the Public Committee for the Restoration of Krakow’s Historic Sites, the Commission of Art History in the Polish Academy of Science, the Polish Academy of Skills, the Association of Lovers of Krakow, and the Association of Art Historians, in whose Head Administration he fulfilled the function of vice-president several times. He was also active in Solidarity. After the illegalization of the labor union during Marshall Law, he made his apartment available for conspiratorial gatherings. Andrzej Fischinger died on the 18th of June, 2005.

"Portret z wnętrzem"
Opis:
Recently, more than 50 years after the artist’s death, the work of Andrzej Wróblewski has been re-discovered. Exhibitions and catalogues of his works are very popular and paintings are particularly sought after. In this renaissance of Wróblewski’s art, the unexpected finding of his missing painting is a significant event. Not every day a conservator is privileged to participate in such a discovery and it is my great pleasure to describe the process in this article. From the very beginning of the conservation process on oil painting Mountain Landscape there was a strong indication, that under the thick layer of average quality painting something far more interesting is hidden. Firstly, on the back of the canvas there was a figure of a standing man (painted in the window of the stretcher), in terms of its technique and artistic value far more superior to the Mountain Landscape. Secondly, in the corner of the back there was a paper label, with a phrase: Andrzej Wróblewski, “Portrait with the interior” and information that the painting was purchased on February the 7th 1953 at the exhibition in Kraków, Poland. It was very unlikely the sticker had been placed there by accident, and if it had concerned the painting on the back, it would have been located elsewhere. Therefore, it seemed very probable that under a thick layer of landscape, there was a painting by Andrzej Wróblewski. In this article the process of uncovering of the Portrait with the interior is described in detail, the conservation methods are explained, and the inquiry into documents and catalogues that helped to authenticate the painting before the start of a risky reconstruction. In the end, the conservation of one painting by an amateur painter uncovered a missing Portrait with the interior (on the front, under the layers of paint). Additionally, the painting on the back was identified as Wróblewski’s work. Finally, visible fragments of paint layer on the edges of the canvas, on the back (hidden under the stretchers), indicates the possible existence of a third painting of the same artist.

Opis:
The presently discussed outline project of an office building to be constructed in 28 Emilii Plater Street, Warsaw, was designed at the Institute for the Foundations of the Development o f Architecture, Warsaw College o f Science and Technology, within the frameworks o f a study on revalorization o f a major complex o f the built-up area dating from the second half o f the 19th and the early 20th century. In the area covered by the research, and situated in the centre of Warsaw, there is to be found a site once occupied by a building which has been pulled down. At the time of commencement of the said study there was already available a project design o f an office building to be raised in the said site. The project aroused, however, numerous objections since it referred neither to the dimensions and skyline nor the character o f the neighbouring tenement-houses. Hence two variants o f the project prepared as an attempt at introducing there architectonic forms which, though up-to-date, would be harmonized with the historical surroundings. The authors o f the project started from the assumption that the new building seen from more distant parts of the central area would make an impression o f one similar to the neighbouring nineteenth century houses and, at close quarters, of a structure typical of modern architecture. The inspiration were the characteristic traits of employed in moulding a tenementhouse, e.g. the rhythm o f window openings, crossections of the roof, more pronounced outline o f lower storeys and the crowning and light-and-shade effects of the bay windows and details. They were translated into a modern modular system o f shield walls and also of the roofs, built of plastic materials with the outer layer o f imported mat asbestic tile having a fine, slight relief or a layer o f plaster. The door and window trims are o f yellow metal. In the design of inner elevation large glazed surfaces and inclined walls were introduced in order to provide for better insolation of the interior.

Opis:
For the past fifty years Maria and Andrzej Szypowski have delighted us with their magnificent publications, many of which are about Warsaw. The first in a series of books inviting the reader to visit the oldest part of the city is the album Gdy wchodzisz w progi Katedry... (As You Enter the Cathedral...). The successive “Warsaw” publication – Gdy wchodzisz na Stare Miasto... (As You Enter the Old Town...) – reminds us that the year 2000 marked the twentieth anniversary of the introduction of the Warsaw Old Town onto the UNESCO World Heritage List. A following volume in the series in question is entitled Gdy wchodzisz na Nowe Miasto... (As You Enter the New Town...). The inimitable style of all the publications has been achieved by combining outstanding and precise information with lavish illustrations, and by presenting not merely historical monuments or the story of their reconstruction but also by depicting the connections between Old Warsaw and the life of the town’s residents. Extraordinary skill and remarkable sensitivity are required to convey the local atmosphere by resorting to word and image. The three volumes have reappeared under the joint title: Trylogia Staromiejska (The Old Town Trilogy). Issued in a smaller and more convenient format, they are available in a decorative box and accompanied by a supplement – Tablice Pamięci (Memory Tables). This fusion of particular parts of the series into a whole produces an ever more distinct awareness of impressive variety and an excellent selection of illustrations composed not only of photographs but also numerous reproductions of engravings, paintings and drawings. Many photographs have been published for the first time. Compared with earlier iconography, they depict transformations affecting space and architecture, as well as the daily life of this most ancient fragment of Warsaw.
