    Opis:
    In this paper the author presents in chronological order the problem of preservation of cultural monuments in Sweden, which he had studied during his last stay in that country. Included into the adjoining annex is the Manifesto of King Charles issued in Stockholm in 1666, which was the starting point for the legal aspect of preservation of historical relics. Further on the paper submits the detailed organisational scheme of Swedish governmental authorities responsible for preservation of cultural monuments: The High Board for Preservation of National Monuments and The Royal Academy of Literature, History and Antiquity, which are statutorily connected. In its wide meaning preservation of cultural monuments in Sweden is based upon legal acts and developed state machine. The final reorganisation in this field was regulated by the legal act issued in 1942, which automatically repealed a number of old laws; the act aimed at establishing the uniform legal background for preservation of national monuments, meeting the requirements of the present day. The project of a new legal act on the preservation problems has been given a lot of attention in Stockholm recently. And this is going to be linked with the reorganisation of the existing system of management. The Swedes try to create such legal and organisational forms that would not interfere with the demands of future. The number of legal acts presented in this paper, which have been issued for last ages running, speaks well for the Swedish national traditions in care for relics of the past.

    In 1844-1855, an inventory of historical monuments on the territory of the Kingdom of Poland established under the protectorate of the Russian Empire was made. The works financed with state resources in compliance with an issued instruction were carried out by Kazimierz Stronczyński, head of a State Commission, and assisted by a draughtsman and an archivist. Kazimierz Stronczynski (1809-1896), a heraldist, sfragistist, and a numismatist, was well prepared to fulfil this task. The delegation reached monuments in 410 towns within 5 guberniyas of the Kingdom. The fruit of the works in the form of five volumes of descriptions and 420 water-colour views in seven portfolios has luckily survived at the Print Cabinet of the Warsaw University Library. This tremendous work: the first in Europe state-run inventory of historical monuments, remains unpublished despite the fact that 150 years have elapsed since its creation,. It was only Michał Walicki in his essay of 1931 who analysed the works of Stronczynski and his co-workers. The inventory has only partially been used for conservation works. Publication of the monumental inventory has become the matter of pride. Therefore, on the initiative of the Warsaw University Library preparations to publish Stronczyński' work have been undertaken. A nine-person team of art historians headed by the author of the present article have made an attempt to reach the monuments described by Stronczyński in order to confront their present state of preservation with the original one from 150 years ago. For this purpose photographs were taken from the places from which watercolours had previously been painted. The elaborated commentaries did not only record changes, but also completed historical information using the most recent scholarly literature. Currently, attempts are being made to acquire financing to publish this colossal ten-volume work by Stronczyński.

    Opis:
    Marian Arszyński, an acclaimed historian of art and culture, discusses the progress of conservation reflections and methodology across the ages, together with conservation mechanisms, including those of an organisationallegal and practical nature. In doing so he refers to the views of numerous theoreticians such as E. Viollet-le-Duc A. Riegl, M. Dwořak, P. Edwards, and J. Ruskin. A presentation of the fate of selected examples of monuments originating from assorted historical motifs and parts of the world within their cultural, social, ideological and political context. The author considers the part played by monuments within social space and in a period spanning from antiquity to the middle of the last century, with special attention paid to Italy in the fifteenth-eighteenth century, and various undertakings for the sake of the preservation of monuments, in particular classical ones. The most copious part of the publication deals with the development of methods for the protection and restoration of monuments in Europe from the late eighteenth century to the middle of the last century. In conclusion the author indicates the process of granting conservation a truly scientific form and the academic training of restoration experts and conservators. The titular publication comprises an indispensable source of knowledge for conservation services, employees of schools of higher learning who teach conservators and architects, historians, experts on political studies and culture, sociologists, students as well as all lovers and co-guardians of cultural heritage.
