Opis:
The author, a Director of the Historical Monuments Documentation Centre, taking the opportunity of the ten-year period that elapsed from the time when the Centre 'has been established, presents its 'history, its tasks and discusses its plans for the future. The Historical Monuments Documentation Centre was called into being on January 1, 19(02 by the Minister of Culture and Arts decision issued on the 2i2nd December, 1901. Ilts finst residence consisted of a couple of rooms in the former Palace of the (Polish Primate, Senatorska (Street Ii3—1(5. On January 1, ,1971 its siege became an ancient house located at Brzozowa Street ,36 in the Old Town quarter of Warsaw. The activities of the Centre are based on co-operation and contributions made by a number of its constant collaborators recruiting from among conservators and scientists. In addition, a steady co-operation has been established with several institutions throughout the country of whom most fruitful proved to be relations with Technical Universities, the State Ateliers of Historic Monument Conservation, museums, scientific and research institutes, archives and so forth. The scope of tasks of the Centre consists in gathering and elaborating the complex documentation for all the kinds of movable and immovable historical monuments in this country. Up to now considerable amounts of historical, iconographie (illustrative), bibliographic, photographic and survey materials have been gathered, in other words, of all these materials that are allowing for full appraising of the monument’s values. That type of material also permits for right planning, influences the conservator’s decisions and proves highly helpful for appropriate conservation thus representing an excellent source for scientific work and interpretation. In addition, the Centre has been furnished with the rights to supervise the inventory works and classification of movable monuments that is organized and financed by the conservators. Thus it is in tight co-operation with the field Monument Documentation Offices that were founded recently as the sections in Conservator’s Offices. ' In the nearest future it is planned to start the preparation and publishing of Monument Inventories, among them of those in the field of architecture as, for instance, palaces, town halls, churches etc., and of movable monuments tike the goldsmith’s pieces, paintings, ancient organs, sculptures and s.o. The inventories of all monuments accurately prepared as to the documentation accompanying each item are expected to fullfill the task of the complex documentation. Preparatory works have already been started but for completing the whole task several years of a methodical action are required. No interpretations are to be contained in those catalogues, they are thought as supplying only the purely documentary material basing on the scientific research methods. The Centre’s other tasks consist in subsidizing the research work and organizing the conservators’ conferences. These latter are to play a many-sided part as they are intended to serve the exchange of experiences and views of the professionally active conservators, and at the same time constitute a forum where they encounter the representatives of natural sciences. Materials gathered as a result of each conference as well .as the proceedings in their printed form are being used as instructional materials for the higher schools at which the conservators are trained and also supply an evidence of development of the Polish thought in the field of conservation. This is exactly these conferences that are solving a number of essential problems characteristic of the conservators’ milieux and thus help to improve the methods used in conservation. Both the results of works carried out by the Centre and those on its initiatives find their expression in publications. Each forthcoming year brings the speeding up and increasing the number of publications dealing with the perplexed problems of monument protection and conservation. Through a wide exchange of our publications the Centre plays an important role in the field of instruction and also that of popularization of monument protection and conservation in Poland.

MODERNISTIC ARCHITECTURE
Opis:
The condition of buildings dating from the modernist period gives rise to increasing anxiety. A breakthrough event was the demolition of the Supersam shop in Warsaw despite universal recognition of its architectural merits. The decision was made at a time when the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, one of the most prestigious institutions associated with architecture in the world, was holding a one-man show of projects by Prof.Waclaw Zalewski, the co-author of the Supersam building. The above-mentioned demolition accentuated the necessity of urgent steps concerning the protection of twentieth-century architecture. This is the reason why Dr. Marcin Gawlicki, director of the National Heritage Board of Poland, set up a team entrusted with the task of preparing rules for the valorisation and protection of architecture from the modernist period. The Polish section of DOCOMOMO (Documentation and Conservation of Buildings, Sites and Neighbourhoods of the Modern Movement) declared it willingness to cooperate. The first meeting established the course of the team's activity. The prime objective is to be the preparation of a strategy of protecting modernist buildings in Poland, frequently threatened with considerable redesigning or demolition. The most urgent tasks include defining the rules of the documentation of twentieth century buildings and uniform criteria of appraising the worth of modernist architecture, together with a selection of the most valuable edifices from this period in particular parts of the country. The next session will deal with uniform rules of documenting modernist architecture and the criteria of its assessment.

Opis:
In recent years the conservation milieu has been observing with increasing anxiety assorted investments conducted in mediaeval castles. The introduction of new functions into old walls and ruins is indubitably a fascinating experience for the designers. The reconstruction of ruins may also prove to be a motor force for the development of small localities. Systemic transformations in Poland and accompanying ownership changes affecting this particular group of monuments have vividly revealed the frailty of the existing procedures, the principles of conservation undertakings and, quite possibly, the existing legislation solutions. On 7 December 2007 the head of the National Heritage Board of Poland established a College involving the Commission of Conservation Theory and Military Architecture at the Polish National Committee of ICOMOS, representatives of the academic environments of the Warsaw, Gdansk and Lublin University of Technology as well as Lódz University, together with a representative of the voivodeship conservators of historical monuments and an employee of the National Heritage Board of Poland. The task of the College consists of devising a strategy for the protection of mediaeval castles in Poland. Up to now, it has held three sessions and a seminar combined with a scientific tour of the castles of Little Poland (Cracow, 29- 31 July 2008).

Thé Society for Protection of the Monuments of the Past, formed in 1906, exercised an extremely important role in preservation of Polish historical monuments in the Russian sector of partitioned Poland (where there did not exist a state conservation service) and also after Poland’s liberation in 1918. The Society assisted effectively the then scarce number of conservators, its activities having been conducted in many different lines: surveys and photographing of historical monuments, scientific research, elaboration of the methods of conservation, issuing of opinions and carrying out of conservation work on a large scale •— with regard to both the monuments of architecture and movables o f historical value, organization of exhibitions and scientific sessions, issuing of extensive catalogues and other publications. The Society was divided into a few sections all of them headed by experienced specialists, architects, artists, historians o f art, connected mostly with the Department of Architecture of the Warsaw College of Science and Technology. The seat of the Society was Baryczka House in 32 Old Town Market Square, Warsaw, where there was to be found the Society’s collection o f iconographical materials, libry and museum. The Society was dissolved by the Nazi occupation authorities in 1939 but its collection of the works of a rt saved due to the selfless efforts o f its former members. The Society for Protection o f Historical Monuments, formed in 1973, and referring to the tradition of its predecessor, commemorated the seventieth anniversary of the formation o f the Society for Protection of the Monuments of the Past by having organized a formal session in Warsaw on October 21, 1977.
