Opis:
As conservator-restorers we should be „a voice of reason”, an advocate that speaks for the cultural heritage values of our built heritage. However, we are often only one voice in a large group consisting of everything from structural engineers, geologists and carpenters to economic advisors and bureaucrats. Being a conservator-restorer in such settings often turns out to be a great balancing act. On the one hand, we are supposed to protect the buildings against any intervention that will compromise its authenticity and cultural values. On the other hand, we must allow as much protective work as possible to ensure the buildings’ future. Questions that can arise for a conservator-restorer during and after discussions in multi-disciplinary groups are many. Questions that needs answering before work starts. Are the conservator-restorer and the master craftsperson really on each end of the scale in a project, or is it just that we use different words? Is it conservation ethics versus the practical view of the engineer, or can both sides be pragmatic and find a new and possibly better solution? Is it possible that the conservator-restorer and the funding body can meet in the middle, or can that jeopardize the project?

Giorgio Bonsanti, as a contemporary witness of Umberto Baldini’s professional activities in Florence and his successor as Soprintendente of the Opificio delle Pietre Dure, gives an overview of the closely intertwined situation in theory and practice of conservation-restoration at Baldini’s time. He analyses terms and principles of Baldini’s Theory and Methodological Unity and emphasises this theory as well as the related methods of reintegration as a development of Brandi’s Theory and the methods of the Istituto Centrale per il Restauro in Rome. Furthermore, he shortly outlines actual Italian positions in theory and practice of conservation-restoration.

The need to show to the public issues related to conservation of cultural properties first became clear in the eighties during the great projects conducted in the Roman forum. Three major conservation innovations were introduced at that time: documentation became part of the contract specifications; consolidation was performed using slaked lime; the worksite scaffolding was opened to non-specialists. The way in which the documentation is realized is an indicator of the quality and professionalism of a program. This should incorporate a communication plan, to promote and raise awareness among the public about the instances related to the conservation of cultural heritage. This article addresses the communication principles applied to conservation interventions.

This article discusses the role that new digital technologies play on conservation-restoration of fragmentary artefacts. Above all, the use of these tools is essential in case the artefacts have lost the formal unity and reach us without documentation concerning their original position, as in the case of the Roman frescoes from Sybaris, object of this study. The creation of virtual models proves as fundamental for the material and formal recomposition of the artefacts, especially in the creation of a new support and display choices. This last aspect required an analysis on the effects that virtual reconstructions and augmented reality have on visitors.

The theoretical framework of building heritage conservation is not necessarily a predefined set of tenets and axioms with potentially universal significance, but a result of particular challenges and practices bound in time and place. In this article, the guidelines of building heritage conservation in Switzerland in the last century are outlined briefly with reference to the broader European theoretical discourse. Focusing on the contradictions between the theoretical position and practical work of Linus Birchler, it argues for the necessity to re-read and assess our principles of building heritage conservation in relation to the specific built cases they originated from.

Transdisciplinarity has shaped the development of both conservation science and conservation-restoration. The history of conservation science demands the commitment of all involved specialists to follow a common vision in the field. The present article highlights some key lessons to assist in closing the gap between the promotion of high-level research projects and the development and assessment of proficient professional practice in conservation science and conservation-restoration. The necessary framework conditions should also be brought to the attention of responsible politicians. Reflecting on conservation theory and practice “at the turn of the millennium” I propose to take a closer look at interdisciplinary work devoted to maintenance of Cultural Heritage since the beginning of the 20th century.

Under the Act of 23 July, 2003 on the Protection and Guardianship of Monuments, employees of historic preservation offices supervise works carried out to historic monuments and sites as well as determine their scope. The scope of works depends on the form of legal protection and it is conditional on the decision pertaining to legal protection, i.e. listing a property or site in the register or municipal/communal record of historic monuments and sites; providing area-wide protection: defining historic preservation area in a local zoning plan. Members of staff of historic preservation offices are responsible for assessing documents pertaining to renovation, restoration, and conservation works carried out to monuments and sites as well as make administrative decisions on all actions, regardless of the level on which they are taken: issuing conservation guidelines, permits for conducting research on historic monuments and sites, making decisions on commencing conservation works, supervising the works until their completion. Quality of works carried out to historic monuments and sites depends on individual experience and skills that the members of staff of historic preservation offices demonstrate. The higher the rank of a monument or site, the heavier responsibility historic preservation offices shoulder.

Opis:
Authenticity is a key term in the modern theory and practice of heritage preservation. The great influence of this term began with the Venice Charter and increased in the following decades until this day, as numerous documents and publications have dealt with issues concerning the concept and significance of authenticity. However, the term is characterized by a certain vagueness, despite its central role in the international debate. This article presents three case studies related to the conservation-restoration of wall paintings and architectural surfaces in Germany and Italy and uses them to clarify some central theoretical issues, intertwining them with practical needs and demands. The multi-layered meanings of authenticity in the practice of conservation-restoration can range from the respectful preservation of the handed-on conditions and appearance of a work, with all material remains of its reception and interpretation, to the critical evaluation of historical restorations based on scholarly value judgments, and even to the reconstruction e. g. of architectural surfaces as a method for the sustainable protection of historical findings and a good way to visualize historical presentations and hand on traditions of craftmanship. For such a broad spectrum of meanings, the term authenticity can become a helpful umbrella term in interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary communication, well-known and appreciated by all experts and by the public. In order to avoid the use of the term authenticity as a catch-all that can mean everything or nothing, the relationship with case studies can bring awareness about the broad palette of these approaches and how the theory and practice of heritage preservation are always interconnected.

Contemporary conservation-restoration practice is affected by theoretical and ethical principles and by social factors. They are often discussed separately, but their effect on the processes of conservation-restoration is complex and intertwined. This paper offers an overview of the development of professional codes of ethics in conservation-restoration and as they relate to and inform professional competences. It looks at how ethics and competences are defined and link with professional education. It also discusses relationships with other professions in the preservation of cultural heritage and the need for clarification on the role and obligation of these respective professions. The legal and social issues they generate at a European level are touched upon.

Art historical research needs to consider the materiality of artefacts, but the character of the material and the state of preservation of any object change over time. Today’s restoration and conservation sciences provide the basis for present research in the field of history of art and architecture. Following this premises and with some examples from current research projects our contribution tries to show how much the contemporary academic Art History can benefit from the material and technical knowledge of conservators.

Opis:
Value assessment of historic monuments and sites and their classification are affected by conservation works and the impact they exert on elements of historical significance. Whether a historic monument or site can be still considered evidence of a past epoch depends on the scope of conservation works carried out in this asset. Works conducted in appropriate manner provide new information about the past. Additionally, a historic monument or site is attributed new values - not only aesthetic and functional but also the historical ones. This allows for changing their classification. Therefore, the role that the results of conservation works play in classification of historic monuments and sites has been particularly emphasised. The author of this article ponders upon whether layers of the previously carried out conservation works as well as their effects can be the reason for redoing value assessment and re-classifying a historic monument or site. These deliberations provided a basis for drawing conclusions and producing recommendations pertaining to the influence that conservation works and layers created as their result exert on the actions taken by historic preservation offices supervising these works. For this reason, the present classification should include the following: – increasing the importance of historic monuments and sites which have not been transformed at all or have been slightly modified This concerns historic monuments and sites which are typical of their epoch, e.g. tenement houses, palaces, industrial plants, etc. – valuable layers and elements created in the course of conservation works, which should be preserved and, prior to issuing permits by historic preservation office and launching conservation works, assessed in terms of their values. These elements should be preserved in order to place these assets under a different class, usually of a higher rank. Preserving elements created in the course of formerly conducted conservation works and resulting in forming multiple layers is compliant with the currently applied conservation theory, which no longer accepts purist methods as a way of preserving monuments and sites. Due to this, it is possible to preserve the evidence of conservation works and take care of historic monuments and sites in order to preserve them for future generations.

The Sacro Monte di Varallo (Sacro Monte of Varallo) is a natural reserve and religious place near Monte Rosa, Piedmont (Italy). Some of the greatest artists of the time worked there to create a representation of the places and events of Christ life with life-size statues and mural paintings, starting from the 15th century. The Conservation and Restoration Center 'La Venaria Reale' carried out a model conservation-restoration project focusing on the conservation of Chapel 1 (which represents the Original Sin). This project was developed as a case study efforts to properly communicate the conservation-restoration issued and the work carried out to different audiences. This initiative is part of a broader project, the Interreg Italy-Switzerland 'Main10ance', which aims to develop a sustainable conservation program for the UNESCO Sacro Montes. Communication was carried out on several levels, based on the interest of visitors, through the following avenues:1 - explanatory panels near Chapel 1;2 – explanatory tours with conservators and other professionals;3 – creation of website with information, insights and news dedicated to the work in progress. To create a more effective and engaging communication, information relating to visitors was collected. The public was grouped according to different characteristics in three public targets: Children; Adult; and Blind people. For each, a reference guidelines and a specific narrative was developed: to involve children it was decided to use games; to address adults, it was decided to focus the discussion on the frequently asked questions posed by visitors; to bring the blind public closer, an evocative visit was proposed. Mock-ups were prepared to give the possibility to touch them, in order to make people understand the difference between surface in good condition and in degraded state.
Sacro Monte di Varallo (Sacro Monte of Varallo) to rezerwat przyrody i miejsce kultu religijnego w pobliżu Monte Rosa w Piemoncie (Włochy). Kilku największych artystów tamtych czasów pracowało tam, aby stworzyć obraz miejsc i wydarzeń z życia Chrystusa z naturalnej wielkości posągami i malowidłami ściennymi, począwszy od XV wieku. – wycieczki edukacyjne z konserwatorami i innymi profesjonalistami; 3. – stworzenie strony internetowej z informacjami, spostrzeżeniami i wiadomościami o trwających pracach. Aby stworzyć bardziej efektywną i angażującą komunikację, zebrano informacje dotyczące zwiedzających. Publiczność została pogrupowana według różnych cech w trzy cele publiczne: Dzieci; Dorośli; i Niewidomi.

Inscriptions are important element of many wall paintings. They are not only part of interior’ decoration but also written document of history of the building. After many years every work of art can be damaged or changed by overpainting and needs conservation and restoration. The fundamental question is if the rules of reintegration of lost parts are the same for all paintings or there is a system specific only for inscriptions? Examples from conservator’s practice show, that there is no strict regulation for protection of “documents written on the wall”. Damaged historic inscriptions are often completed and even reconstructed.
