Opis:
The objective of the paper is to document and examine the major upwelling event that occurred along the northern coast of Estonia in August 2006. With a horizontal extension of 360 km, the event was caused by persistent easterlies and was noticed by a large number of holidaymakers, as it reduced the temperature of the coastal sea to a chilly 5–10◦C for about a month. In situ measurements from an RDCP current profiler revealed an along-wind coastal jet of up to 60 cm s−1 and a weak near-bottom countercurrent. The depths of the pycnocline and nutricline rose. The maximum drop in water temperature was 16◦C, that of salinity was 3.6 PSU. Analysis of satellite images confirmed the large extension and the prominence of the event.

The current state of understanding the North Sea’s physical system is presented. First, basic phenomena like astronomical tides and general circulation will be described and analysed with respect to their physical nature and respective interactions. There will be special focus on fundamental dynamic balances. Next, some specific topics relevant to the marine ecosystem, the economy and society will be considered: among them, spreading and transport processes, the fresh water budget, the heat budget and storm surges. A separate section is dedicated to the North Sea of Tomorrow, i.e. the prospective variations of the physical environment resulting from global changes in future decades. The statements are based on the long experience of the authors and their groups and include findings that are little known if at all. The review finishes with a list of open questions and the corresponding research demands.

The paper analyses one of the longest contemporary wave measurements in the northern Baltic Sea, performed at Almagrundet 1978–2003. This record contains the roughest instrumentally measured wave conditions (significant wave height = c. 7.8 m) in the northern Baltic Proper until December 2004. The data for the years 1979–95, the period for which the data are the most reliable, show a linear rising trend of 1.8% per annum in the average wave height. The seasonal variation in wave activity follows the variation in wind speed. The monthly mean significant wave height varies from 0.5 m in May–July to 1.3–1.4 m in December– January. No corrections have been made in the analysis to compensate for missing values, for their uneven distribution, or for ice cover.

New particle formation and growth were observed at a coastal site (Preila station, Lithuania) during 1997 and 2000–2002. The total amount of data analysed covers 291 one-day periods, 45 (15%) of which were long-term, new particle formation days. Short-term nucleation events (from a few minutes to one hour) and long-term events (from one to eight hours) were identified. The mean particle growth rate, condensation sink and condensable vapour source rate during nucleation events were 3.9 nm h−1, 1.45 × 10−3 cm−3 s−1 and 7.5 × 104 cm−3 s−1 respectively. The average formation rate J10 was 0.4 cm−3 s−1. The nucleation events were accompanied mainly by air masses transported from the north (43%) and north-west (19%). Meteorological parameters and trace gas (O3, SO2, NO2) concentrations were also analysed. It was found that nucleation events are related to high levels of solar radiation.

This note presents a method of how the bed shear stress caused by breaking random waves on slopes can be estimated. This is obtained by adopting the Sumer et al. (2013) bed shear stress formula due to spilling and plunging breaking waves on hydraulically smooth slopes combined with the Myrhaug and Fouques (2012) joint distribution of surf similarity parameter and wave height for individual random waves in deep water. The conditional mean value of the maxima of mean bed shear stress during wave runup given wave height in deep water is provided including an example for spilling and plunging breaking random waves corresponding to typical field conditions. Another example compares the present results with one case from Thornton and Guza (1983) estimating the wave energy dissipation caused by bed shear stress beneath breaking random waves

Opis:
The Curonian Lagoon is a shallow freshwater lagoon of significant environmental value in the south-eastern part of the Baltic Sea. The objective of the study was to evaluate changes of ice indices (duration, thickness and breakup dates) of this lagoon and to assess their possible tendencies in the 21st century. A methodology was developed combining the assessment of past changes (1960–2017) of ice indices and their projections in the near (2021–2040) and far (2081–2100) future periods using a hydrometeorological database, statistical methods and regression analysis as well as regional climate models and RCP scenarios. Climate change has a considerable impact on ice conditions in the Curonian Lagoon. During the historical period of 1960–2017, the Curonian Lagoon was covered with ice for 72 days a year, ice thickness reached 23 cm, whereas ice breakup was observed in the middle of March on average. According to the different scenarios, in the near and far future periods, ice duration will last 35–45 and 3–34 days, respectively. Ice thickness is projected to be 13–15 cm in the near future, whereas, at the end of the century, it is expected to decline to 0–13 cm. In the past, the lagoon ice cover remained until the middle of the third decade of February. At the end of the 21st century, RCP8.5 scenario projects the most drastic shifts: the permanent ice cover might be absent, whereas short-term ice cover is expected to melt already in the beginning of January.

Opis:
This article is supplementary to Myrhaug (2018) and presents some probabilistic properties of the surf parameter for individual waves and the spectral surf parameter for sea states by using distributions based on data from the Norwegian continental shelf. The average statistical features given by the mean value and the standard deviation of the two surf parameters are considered. Examples of results for the surf parameter are provided for a Phillips spectrum and a family of JONSWAP spectra for wind sea, and for sea states using a joint frequency table of significant wave height and mean zero-crossing wave period for combined wind sea and swell. The spectral surf parameter results are obtained by using a joint distribution of significant wave height and spectral surf parameter, and the mean statistical properties are given for joint frequency tables of significant wave height and mean zero-crossing wave period from three deep water locations on the Norwegian continental shelf. It is also demonstrated how the results can be applied to calculate the vertical wave runup elevation for breaking waves.

Opis:
The aim of the study was to determine the trophic state of the Vistula Lagoon in 2007–2009. The analysis of various trophic state indices, abiotic parameters and different water classifications indicated the eutrophy and even advanced hypereutrophy of the lagoon waters. The composition, abundance and biomass of phytoplankton likewise reflect the eutrophic nature of this water body. For this lagoon, Reynold’s functional groups of phytoplankton were used as an indicator of eutrophication for the first time. The dominant phytoplankton organisms in the surface waters belong to 8 functional groups: S1, X1, F, J, K, H1, LO, M. Some key concepts of the EU Water Framework Directive were implemented in this study.

Simulating hurricane-generated waves is a challenging task due to rapidly fluctuating wind speed and direction, simultaneous presence of swells propagating out of the previous location of the hurricane and following/opposing waves on either side of the hurricane track, and dissipation in wind speed radially from the center of the hurricane. Bulk wave parameters have been investigated using the source term packages ST3, ST4 and ST6 implemented in the WAVEWATCH-III model to determine the most appropriate formulation for simulating hurricanegenerated waves in the Gulf of Mexico. Based on the comparisons between model results and in situ observations during the passage of Hurricane Ivan (2004), it is shown that ST3 is not as successful as other formulations for hurricane wave modeling. Calibrated ST6 variant, T12, has shown to be the best formulation for simulating bulk wave parameters at points within the range of hurricane wind forcing; however, for the area beyond, and also during fair weather conditions, calibrated ST4 formulation, T471-Ex4, is recommended. Although T471-EX4 and T12 packages outperformed other cases, they overestimated waves propagating in the oblique and opposing wind. Dependence of ST6 parameter a0 on wind and wave direction is examined to improve the model performance.

Opis:
To examine the distribution of Trichodesmium relative to physicochemical factors during summer in the Changjiang (Yangtze River) Estuary and adjacent East China Sea shelf, three cruises were conducted separately in June 2009, July 2011, and August 2009. Trichodesmium species found were T. thiebautii, T. erythraeum, and T. hildebrandtii. The population was dominated by T. thiebautii, which accounted for >85% of the samples found. Most of them were free trichomes. Colonial forms were rarely observed (approximately 10% of our samples), occurring only in offshore waters. The depth integrated abundances of Trichodesmium were 308 × 103, 1709 × 103, and 3448 × 103 trichomes m−2 in June, July, and August, respectively. Trichodesmium was distributed abundantly in the southern or southeastern part of our study area, where nutrients were low and light penetration, temperature, and salinity were high, which were influenced by the Taiwan Warm Current (TWC) and Kuroshio. Trichodesmium was found in low abundance in inshore, eutrophic, low-salinity waters, which were mainly controlled by the Changjiang Diluted Water (CDW) and coastal current. These results suggest that spatiotemporal changes in the summer Trichodesmium distribution correlate highly with the variations in physicochemical properties that are primarily controlled by the TWC, Kuroshio, and CDW. The summer N2 fixation rate of Trichodesmium was estimated at 12.3 μmol N m−2 d−1 in our study area, contributing >50% of biological N2 fixation.
