    Prawo egzekwowania dyscypliny wojskowej wiąże się ściśle z powstaniem organizacji wojskowej i potrzebą uregulowania odpowiedzialności za posłuszeństwo rozkazowi. Opracowanie przedstawia jak obraz dyscypliny wojskowej zmieniał się na przestrzeni wieków, w zależności od mentalności społeczeństw i panującego ustroju. Początkowo dyscyplina opierała się wyłącznie na stosowaniu rygorystycznych kar, głównie kar śmierci i cielesnych, dołączając z czasem mniej surowe sankcje, np. pieniężne. Obecnie zawodowe Wojsko Polskie posiada system motywowania do wzorowej służby oraz kształtowania zdyscyplinowanych postaw żołnierzy. W okresie ostatnich kilkunastu lat system ten został dostosowany do zachodzących w kraju przeobrażeń ustrojowych, zmian konstytucyjnych, reform społecznych oraz głębokich reorganizacji w Siłach Zbrojnych.
    The right to enforce military disciple is strictly connected with the establishing of military organization and the need to regulate responsibility for obeying orders. The article shows how the perception of military discipline has changed over the centuries depending on the mentality of a society and political systems. Initially disciple implied mainly inflicting severe punishment, mainly capital or corporal punishment, including later less severe sanctions such as fines. Nowadays the Polish Armed Forces, a career ar-my, has a system of motivation to perform commendable service and cre-ate soldiers’ discipline attitudes. During the last dozen years this system has been adjusted to political system transformations, constitutional changes, social reforms and deep reorganization in the Armed Forces.

    Scientific knowledge involves differentiating between what is relevant and irrelevant in the process of describing the reality. While gaining knowledge, demarcation plays a key role of proving the verity of a theory. The science of security, just like any other discipline, determines the value of a theory on the basis of the completeness of justified theorems and hypotheses resulting from scientific cognition. Demarcation confirms instrumental proficiency and mental predisposition related to the use of scientific methods. Lack of demarcation and its criteria disrupts cognition and diminishes, or simply questions, the value of cognition. Therefore, demarcation in science, including the science of security, is a significant element of scientific cognition. It is essential in achieving both the internal goals of scientific knowledge, connected with research requirements, and its external goals, resulting from the social functions of science.

    The paper raises the issues connected with the identification of the subject of research in academic disciplines related to defence of the state. These disciplines exist alongside the disciplines related to security, which means that their areas of research often overlap. The author explains what the subject of research is in social sciences and describes its place in three selected processes of research. The paper emphasizes that the determining of the subject of research is important for the process of research, and describes its connection with the research problem. There is also an explanation of the difference between defence of the state and security. Generally speaking, the subject of research in academic disciplines related to defence of the state is defence systems that counteract threats.

    Contemporary threats show that there is a need for a fresh look at the issues of both security and defence of the state, which should be perceived as concomitant social phenomena. Although each of them constitutes a separate academic discipline with its own separate area of research, they should nevertheless be regarded as being connected with, and dependent on, each other. Both security and defence of the state can be understood in a narrow and a broader sense, which, in turn, leads to difficulties in research, as in practice it is not always possible to determine what the subject of research is of each of these disciplines. Consequently, the paper discusses the issues of both security and defence of the state.
