Opis:
The paper presents preliminary measurement results of the concentrations of 226Ra and 228Ra isotopes in the groundwaters of the Polish part of the Sudety Mountains. The analysis of sampling results for water from 55 intakes showed that the average concentrations amount to 0.144 Bq/dm3 for 226Ra and 0.083 Bq/dm3 for 228Ra, while the extreme values reach 0.007 and 0.92 Bq/dm3 for 226Ra, and 0.004 and 0.4 Bq/dm3 for 228Ra. The activity ratio 228Ra/226Ra in the examined groundwaters ranges between 0.099 and 2.059. The result of the conducted research implies that the highest concentrations of 226Ra and 228Ra occur in the waters with the highest general mineralization (the highest values of total dissolved solids (TDS)).

Opis:
Natural radioactive isotopes were studied in nine different types of brines from four locations in Poland. Investigated brines are exploited from various geological structures composed of the rocks of different chemical and mineral composition as well as different age and depth. All investigated brines are used in balneotherapy (i.e. baths, inhalations, showers). The main goal of this study was to obtain some basic knowledge on the activity range of natural elements such as uranium, radium and radon in different brine types in Poland and their variability depending on their location in certain geological structures. Activities of 234,238U, 226,228Ra and 222Rn isotopes were measured with the use of two nuclear spectrometry techniques: liquid scintillation and alpha spectrometry. The activity concentrations of 222Rn vary from below 1 to 76.1 plus or minus 3.7 Bq/l, for the 226Ra isotope from 0.19 plus or minus 0.01 to 85.5 plus or minus 0.4 Bq/l and for 228Ra from below 0.03 to 2.17 plus or minus 0.09 Bq/l. For uranium isotopes, the concentrations are in the range from below 0.5 to 5.1 plus or minus 0.4 mBq/l for 238U and from 1.6 plus or minus 0.4 to 45.6 plus or minus 2.0 mBq/l for 234U. The obtained results indicate high radium activity concentrations corresponding to high mineralization of waters.

Opis:
The present authors performed investigations of natural radioactivity in groundwater from the Przerzeczyn- -Zdrój Spa. Some of the waters are regarded as medical and are used for balneological purposes. Samples from seven groundwater intakes were collected 5 times over a period of 8 years (1999–2007). In order to obtain necessary data, two different nuclear spectrometry techniques were applied: α spectrometry and liquid scintillation spectrometry. The activity concentrations of 222Rn varied in the range from 15±2 Bq/l to 154±22 Bq/l. The results of activity concentrations of 226,228Ra varied from below 10 mBq/l to 30±1.5 mBq/l and from below 30 mBq/l to 60±4 mBq/l, respectively. Activity concentration lower than minimum detectable activity (MDA) was obtained for 3 samples for 226Ra and 4 for 228Ra determinations out of 7 investigated samples. The uranium content in the studied samples was determined once and the value ranged from 4.5±0.6 mBq/l to 13.6±1.2 mBq/l for 238U and from 17.1±0.9 mBq/l to 52.2±2.8 mBq/l for 234U. All obtained values for uranium isotopes showed activity concentrations above MDA. The activity ratios 234U/238U, 222Rn/226Ra and 226Ra/238U and the correlations between different isotopes concentrations were evaluated.

Opis:
The paper summaries the data of activity concentrations of uranium, radium isotopes, mineralization and temperature of thermal waters. The data were gathered not only from our measurements of thermal waters occurring in the Polish Carpathians, but also from the attained published references in the world. The graphical relations between concentrations of the uranium and radium isotopes in thermal waters and their parameters such as temperature and mineralization were drawn up and discussed. The relation between the contents of 226Ra and 228Ra for the investigated waters was also analysed. The relations show that the influence of temperature on the mineralization and radioactive elements in thermal waters is complicated.

Opis:
The determination of radium isotopes in drinking water by liquid scintillation technique requires some reagents that are used for separating radium from water samples. One of the main reagents is BaCl2·H2O. This paper presents the study of this compound and shows that barium chloride reagent is naturally contaminated with 226Ra. The 226Ra activity concentration in BaCl2·H2O reagent produced by chemical companies from Poland and other countries is equal to a few dozen Bq/kg. Furthermore, 14 mL of 0.10 M BaCl2·H2O solution is the optimum amount which should be used for the chemical procedure. At the optimum amount of barium chloride and 2-hour measurement, the detection limit of 226Ra and 228Ra of the liquid scintillation counting method is equal to 5 and 30 mBq per sample, respectively.

With gamma spectrometric method 23 samples of mineral and thermal waters of Bosnia and Herzegovina were analyzed. Activity concentrations of the investigated radionuclides were in the range 12–346 mBq·L-1 for 40K, 1.1–791 mBq·L-1 for 226Ra, 0.2–221 mBq·L-1 for 228Ra, 13–367 mBq·L-1 for 238U, and 0.6–17 mBq·L-1 for 235U. For all investigated radionuclides annual effective dose was estimated. The estimated total annual committed effective dose received by population as a result of ingestion of water was in the range 0.11–2.51 μSv·y-1 for thermal water and in the range 0.11–38.8 μSv·y-1 for mineral water. Measurement of activity concentrations of natural radionuclides in the examined samples was carried out with a gamma-spectrometer with high-purity germanium (HPGe) detector, having a relative efficiency of 70%.

Opis:
. One of the main sources of public exposure from natural radioactivity is radium and radon and its short lived decay products. The aim of this study is focused on determining the concentration of mentioned radionuclides in the mineral water resources in one of the highest altitude regions (Zagros Mountains), the Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari province, in South-West Iran, namely the Dimeh springs. Eighty drinking spring water samples were taken from the Dimeh springs (ten samples for each spring) to determine radium-226 (226Ra) and radon-222 (222Rn) concentrations using the emanation method and a liquid scintillation counting method, respectively. The results of this study showed that the effective dose from the consumption of drinking water of Dimeh springs (6.4 žSv/y) is not comparable to the other annual effective dose such as inhalation of radon and its products in cosmic and terrestrial rays published by one of the authors previously. Also, the annual effective dose measured here is much lower than the worldwide mean value 0.45 mSv reported by USCEAR, 2000 and is also low enough and below the proposed limits in other countries and this is the reason why this sources of water may be considered as safe drinking water in the region.

This year (2011) marks the 100th Anniversary of the award of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry to Marie Skłodowska-Curie for her discoveries of radium and polonium and her studies of their properties. The United Nations has proclaimed 2011 as the “International Year of Chemistry”, partly in recognition of this 100th anniversary. A resolution of the Sejm of the Republic of Poland has also established 2011 as the Year of Maria Skłodowska-Curie. Marie Curie has been celebrated this year by a host of prestigious societies and in many countries all around the world for winning Nobel Prizes in both Physics (1903), for the discovery of radioactivity together with husband Pierre Curie and Henri Becquerel, and Chemistry (1911). She was the first woman to win Nobel Prizes in both Physics and Chemistry and the only one to date to win prizes in both physics and chemistry. Also remarkable was that after Pierre Curie’s tragic and untimely death in 1906, she was put in charge of his lectures and laboratory, thus marking the first time in France that a woman occupied such a prestigious academic position, and opening the way for other women to follow. The current article will focus on some of the other notable accomplishments of Marie Curie that are not as commonly recognized, including her organizational and persuasive abilities, and her unique contributions as a teacher, mentor, research center founder, and laboratory “la Patronne”.
