Opis:
No nuclear power station are operative in Italy as a consequence of the general public debate on the use of nuclear energy, stressed by the Chernobyl accident and culminated in the Public Referendum in 1987, but within a distance of a few hundreds kilometres from its border several nuclear plants are operating. In case of a nuclear emergency, for instance, an accident in a transboundary plant, ANPA, National Agency for the Environmental Protection, as the duty to coordinate the technical activities supporting the Civil Protection Agency responsible for the management of national-scale radiological emergency. In this context, the realisation of the ANPA Environmental Radiological Surveillance System was started in 1996. The system was designed for continuous monitoring and early warning purposes and then the airborne particulate was selected as main environmental matrix to be observed. The system is composed of two nation-wide monitoring networks connected to the control centre operating at the ANPA's Emergency Centre; measurements, alarm signals and system status informations are transmitted to the centre in real time for data evaluation, reporting and recording into a data-base and for remote diagnostics of the monitoring station functioning. The ANPA Environmental Radioactivity Surveillance System will be described emphasizing the characteristics of automatic monitoring network.

Opis:
In Poland the radioactive contamination of the environment and food has been controlled since the early sixties by the Service for Measurements of Radioactive Contamination (SPSP). The Service comprises a network of measuring stations and the Centre of Radioactive Contamination Measurements (COPSP). Actually, there are 100 measurement stations. The main task of such station is systematic measurement of radioactivity level in samples of environment components and food. Nine stations of SPSP acting within meteorological stations, ten stations of low level air radioactivity measurements (Aerosols Sampling Stations ASS-500) and eleven permanent monitoring stations (PMS) form the radiation monitoring warning system in Poland.

Opis:
Radon Rn-222 is a commonly occurring natural radionuclide found in the environment from uranium- -radium radioactive series, which is the decay product of radium Ra-226. The presence of radon carries negative health effects. It is, in fact, classifi ed as a carcinogen, and therefore, it is necessary to continuously monitor its concentration. The aim of this study was to determine the level of radon-222 concentration in water intended for human consumption in the two voivodeships of Poland: West Pomeranian and Kuyavian-Pomeranian. Measurements were performed for more than 60 intakes. The level of radon was measured by using the liquid scintillation counting method. The range of measured radon concentration in the water from the West Pomeranian Voivodeship was from 0.90 to 11.41 Bq/dm3 with an average of 5.01 Bq/dm3, while that from the Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship was from 1.22 to 24.20 Bq/dm3 with an average of 4.67 Bq/dm3. Only in three water intakes, the concentration of radon-222 exceeded the value of 10 Bq/dm3. The obtained results allowed to conclude that population exposure associated with radon-222 in water is negligible and there is no need to take further action. In the case of three intakes where a higher concentration of radon was found, the potential exposure was low.
