Opis:
The laser-matter interaction using nominal laser intensity above 1015 W/cm2 generates in vacuum non- -equilibrium plasmas accelerating ions at energies from tens keV up to hundreds MeV. From thin targets, using the TNSA regime, plasma is generated in the forward direction accelerating ions above 1 MeV per charge state and inducing high-ionization states. Generally, the ion energies follow a Boltzmann-like distribution characterized by a cutoff at high energy and by a Coulomb-shift towards high energy increasing the ion charge state. The accelerated ions are emitted with the high directivity, depending on the ion charge state and ion mass, along the normal to the target surface. The ion fluencies depend on the ablated mass by laser, indeed it is low for thin targets. Ions accelerated from plasma can be implanted on different substrates such as Si crystals, glassy-carbon and polymers at different fluences. The ion dose increment of implanted substrates is obtainable with repetitive laser shots and with repetitive plasma emissions. Ion beam analytical methods (IBA), such as Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy (RBS), elastic recoil detection analysis (ERDA) and proton-induced X-ray emission (PIXE) can be employed to analyse the implanted species in the substrates. Such analyses represent ‘off-line’ methods to extrapolate and to character the plasma ion stream emission as well as to investigate the chemical and physical modifications of the implanted surface. The multi-energy and species ion implantation from plasma, at high fluency, changes the physical and chemical properties of the implanted substrates, in fact, many parameters, such as morphology, hardness, optical and mechanical properties, wetting ability and nanostructure generation may be modified through the thermal-assisted implantation by multi-energy ions from laser-generated plasma.

Opis:
In December 2001, a 5 kW beam was accelerated for the first time at GANIL. This performance was achieved after the increase of SSC2 dee voltage from 170 kV to 200 kV. Moreover, several technical developments have been done, to improve the operation with high intensity beams, and a new electrostatic deflector is under construction in order to reduce losses and activation at the exit of SSC2. This paper presents an overview of these works and the main results on the last accelerated beams.

Opis:
Joining of metals with ceramics is very difficult, because properties of these materials are very different. One of the methods of improving mechanical strength of the obtained joints is the introduction of an additional interlayer to the joining area. This paper presents the Zr and Cu-rich layers in C and SiC substrates obtained using the high intensity pulsed plasma beams method. The results of Zr plasma modifications were beneficial and similar to the results obtained in previous works with Ti. The measured contact angles were below 90 centigrade. The results with Cu plasma were unfavourable with contact angles close to 180 centigrade. Apart from the sessile-drop test and to extend the range of analysis, the investigated samples were examined by stereoscopic optical microscopy (OM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDXS), grazing angle X-ray diffraction (GXRD), and Rutherford back scattering (RBS) measurements.

Opis:
This paper deals with the problem of fast electron propagation in plasmas, in the context of the fast ignition (FI) approach to inertial confinement fusion (ICF). In FI, a short-pulse high-intensity laser beam should generate a beam of relativistic electrons, which propagate into the compressed pellet, depositing energy and igniting the fuel. The study of electron propagation in dense matter is hence essential to the success of this scheme. The propagation of relativistic electrons in dense matter is determined by collisions of fast electrons with ions and electrons in the material, which can be described in terms of stopping power, but it also depends on self-generated magnetic and electric fields, which play a major, or even dominant role. In this paper we will show the importance of such collective effects by discussing several experimental examples.

Opis:
This paper presents the results of experiments conducted within the Work Package 10 (fusion experimental programme) of the HiPER project. The aim of these experiments was to study the physics relevant for advanced ignition schemes for inertial confinement fusion, i.e. the fast ignition and the shock ignition. Such schemes allow to achieve a higher fusion gain compared to the indirect drive approach adopted in the National Ignition Facility in United States, which is important for the future inertial fusion energy reactors and for realising the inertial fusion with smaller facilities.
