Opis:
Glasshouse experiments were carried out in Wagner pots containing 6 kg of soil. The amounts were compared of Zn, Pb and Cd taken up by the crop of spring wheat from contamination introduced into the soil or upon leaves. The heavy metals were labelled with the radioactive isotopes 65Zn, 210Pb and 115Cd. The experiment was performed as a series of independent analyses in four replications. The dynamics of the labelled heavy metals translocation from contaminations sprayed on the upper or bottom side of the flag leaf was also tested. The highest concentration of 65Zn was found in the straw and grain of wheat. Much higher amounts of the metals appeared to have been taken up by the plants from leaf contamination than from the soil. The highest dynamics of translocation from leaves to other vegetative and generative organs of plants was that of zinc.

A release of radioactive material into the environment can lead to hazardous exposure of the population and serious future concerns about health issues such as an increased incidence of cancer. In this context, a practical methodology capable of providing useful basic information from the scenario can be valuable for immediate decisions and future risk assessment. For this work, the simulation of a radiological dispersal device (RDD) filled with americium-241 was considered. The radiation dose simulated by the HotSpot code was used as an input to the epidemiological equations from BEIR V producing the data used to assess the risk of lung cancer development. The methodology could be useful in providing training for responders aimed to the initial support addressed to decision-making for emergency response at the early phase of an RDD scenario. The results from the simulation allow estimating (a) the size of the potentially affected population, (b) the type of protection action considering gender and location of the individuals, (c) the absorbed doses, (d) the matrix of lung cancer incidence predictions over a period of 5 years, and (e) the cost-effectiveness in the initial decision environment.

The triggering of a “dirty bomb” generates a complex scenario, with enormous challenges for the responders due to initial misinformation and the urgency to act quickly yet effectively. Normally, the first 100 h are decisive for perceiving the risk in a more realistic dimension, but the support of methodologies that rely on computational simulations can be valuable when making key decisions. This work seeks to provide support for the early decision-making process by using a Gaussian model for the distribution of a quantity of Cs-137 spread by a radiological dispersive device (RDD). By sequentially joining two independent programs, HotSpot Health Physics codes and RESidual RADiation (RESRAD)-RDD family of codes, we came up with results that suggest a segmented approach to the potentially affected population. These results advocate that (a) the atmospheric stability conditions represented by the Pasquill–Gifford classes and (b) the population subgroups defi ned by radiation exposure conditions strongly influence the postdetonation radiological effects. These variables should be taken into account in the elaboration of flexible strategies that include many climatic conditions and to prioritize attention to different groups of public at risk. During the initial phases of such an event, it is believed that simulations using Gaussian models may be of value in anticipating the possible changes in key variables during the decision-making process. These variables may severely affect the effectiveness of the actions of responders and the general public’s safety.

From the obtained results it was found that Macrolepiota procera and Armillariella mellea are defined by low ability to accumulate caesium. Higher values of 137Cs were measured in Russula aeruginea and Xerocomus subtomentosus and achieved 869.6 and 322.9 Bg kg 1 dry weight, respectively. Soaking and washing can be used to decrease radioactivity in mushrooms. Using water and solution of table salt in studied species of mushrooms decreased the amount of radiocaesium by 33 88%.

Air samples were collected at an early-warning sampling and monitoring radioactive contamination station ASS-500. The results of the measurements are presented for radioactive aerosols collected on filters each week between 1992 and 1999. The large variations in activity concentration were observed in annual cycles. The maximum values exceeded the mean annual values by a factor of 2.8 to 7.3. Over the period of eight years the mean values of activity in air was found to decrease from 5.3 mi Bq m-3 in 1992 to 2.2 mi Bq m-3 in 1999. A good correlation between the Cs-137 activity and dust content in the air indicates that in the observed period the main source of Cs-137 activity is the dust with soil and vegetation particles. The effect of radiation from inhalation is negligible (626 pSv).

This paper presents vertical distribution of 137Cs, 226Ra and 239,240Pu in bottom sediments collected from the Southern Baltic Sea in the years 1998-2000. In the southern part of Baltic Sea the highest concentrations of 137Cs and 239,240Pu were observed at the Gulf of Gdansk. Deposition of 137Cs ranged from 1990š402 Bq m-2 in the Bornholm Basin to 3260š820 Bq m-2 in the Gulf of Gdansk. Depositions of 239,240Pu in the Bornholm Basin were 28.1-30.4 Bq m-2 and in Gulf of Gdansk 162-174 Bq m-2. The concentration peaks of long-lived radionuclides, owing to the sedimentation processes, show the maximum fallout period in different sediment layers. The observed differences in distribution of radiocaesium and plutonium along the profile confirm two main sources of contamination - Chernobyl fallout for 137Cs and global fallout in case of 239,240Pu. In chosen core samples from the Gdansk Basin vertical distribution of 210Pb concentrations were determined. Evaluated sedimentation rates based on decrease of unsupported 210Pb ranged in the Gdansk Basin from 1.9 to 2.3 mm year-1. Calculations based on 239,240Pu peaks show sedimentation rate, in the range from 1.6-2.2 mm year-1 for P110 region.

The aim of this study was to compare the amount of radiocaesium in chosen compartments of environment in two localities of Košice vicinity (Košice and Jasov). Prevailing part of radiocaesium is in the upper layer of soils and specific activity of 137Cs in the first layer for locality Jasov in 2001 achieved 21.49 Bq.kg 1. Transfer factor values estimated for mixed grasses and for individual years varied within the range of 0.22 to 0.56 at locality Košice and of 0.09 to 0.19 at locality Jasov. On the base of results from modified Tessier sequential extraction method we determined that more than 50% of this radionuclide is in the soil in not extractable fraction. From studied species of mushrooms in sample of Rozites caperata the specific activity achieved 1822.0 Bq.kg 1 d.w.

Opis:
The studies aimed at determining low activities of alpha radioactive elements are widely recognized as essential for the human health, because of their high radiotoxicity in case of internal contamination. Some groups of workers of nuclear facility at Otwock are potentially exposed to contamination with plutonium isotopes. For this reason, the method for determination of plutonium isotopes has been introduced and validated in Radiation Protection Measurements Laboratory (LPD) of the National Centre for Nuclear Research (NCBJ). In this method the plutonium is isolated from a sample by coprecipitation with phosphates and separated on a AG 1-X2 Resin. After electrodeposition, the sample is measured by alpha spectrometry. Validation was performed in order to assess parameters such as: selectivity, accuracy (trueness and precision) and linearity of the method. The results of plutonium determination in urine samples of persons potentially exposed to internal contamination are presented in this work.

Radioactive contamination of the environment means a higher concentration of radioisotopes with regard to background level. Undoubdtedly, the incidental or permanent emissions of radionuclides to the environment are the sources of radioactive pollution. In this connection the diversity of radioisotopes distribution in nature can be observed. The key aim of the presented work was to ascertain the presence of radioactive elements and their decay products in the environment. Nuclides were emitted by selected conventional coal-fired power plants located in the south of Poland. The samples from the neighbourhood of three power plants and a sample from “clean” territory were measured. Additionaly, we measured the concentration of 137Cs istotope descended from the Chernobyl disaster.

The aim of this work is to assess the current deposits of Cs-137 in soil and in lakes in the Poland's north-eastern lake district (12-14 years after Chernobyl accident) a dozen or so years after the Chernobyl disaster. Caesium content in soil and sediment was determined by gamma spectrometry (in 79 soil samples and 136 sediment samples). The soil samples were collected in summer 1998-2000. The sediment from 29 lakes were sampled in May 2000. The highest surface activity was found in soil with the arithmetic mean (AM) 3.13 kBq m-2 and median (M) 2.37 kBq m-2. For lakes, the respective values were 1.89 kBq m-2 and 1.5 kBq m-2. In the case of the soil samples collected from forests, fields, lake shores and arable lands, the mean values of caesium deposition were: 4.37, 2.56, 3.42 and 1.52 kBq m-2, respectively. The mean surface activity of sedimentary samples (AM) from oligotrophic, mesotrophic and eutrophics lakes was found to have different values, viz. 1.48, 2.23 and 1.86 kBq m-2, respectively.

The aim of this study is the evaluation of electron dose enhancement and photon contamination production by various nanoparticles in the electron mode of a medical linac. MCNPX Monte Carlo code was used for simulation of Siemens Primus linac as well as a phantom and a tumor loaded with nanoparticles. Electron dose enhancement by Au, Ag, I and Fe2O3 nanoparticles of 7, 18 and 30 mg/ml concentrations for 8, 12 and 14 MeV electrons was calculated. The increase in photon contamination due to the presence of the nanoparticles was evaluated as well. The above effects were evaluated for 500 keV and 10 keV energy cut-offs defined for electrons and photons. For 500 keV energy cut-off, there was no significant electron dose enhancement. However, for 10 keV energy cut-off, a maximum electron dose enhancement factor of 1.08 was observed for 30 mg/ml of gold nanoparticles with 8 MeV electrons. An increase in photon contamination due to nanoparticles was also observed which existed mainly inside the tumor. A maximum photon dose increase factor of 1.07 was observed inside the tumor with Au nanoparticles. Nanoparticles can be used for the enhancement of electron dose in the electron mode of a linac. Lower energy electron beams, and nanoparticles with higher atomic number, can be of greater benefi t in this field. Photons originating from nanoparticles will increase the photon dose inside the tumor, and will be an additional advantage of the use of nanoparticles in radiotherapy with electron beams.

Long-term results of ground-level air radionuclide contamination at the Russian coast of the Baltic Sea (nuclear facilities in the vicinity of the town of Sosnovy Bor) are under consideration. As compared with 1992-1997 [1], the Leningrad Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) equipment hermetic sealing (in 1998-1999) caused both the reduction of detection frequency of 131I aerosol and the maximum concentrations of 137Cs in the ground-level air at the NPP site. Long-term weekly nuclides' concentration time series were examined by the correlation analysis. Results of the analysis are presented. The seasonal fluctuations of 7Be concentrations in the ground-level air were examined by the harmonic (Fourier) analysis. The seasonal fluctuations of its concentrations with the maximum in spring-summer period are shown.

Phytoextraction field experiments were conducted on soil contaminated with radiocesium to determine the capacity of autochthonous grasses and weeds to accumulate 137Cs. The aim of the study was to evaluate the potential of spontaneously growing vegetation as a tool for decontamination of non-agricultural contaminated land. As a test field, the closed monitored area of the radioactive wastewater treatment plant of the Nuclear Power Plant in Jaslovské Bohunice, Slovakia was used. Contamination was irregularly distributed from the level of background to spots with maximal activity up to 900 Bq/g soil. Sequential extraction analysis of soil samples showed the following extractability of radiocesium (as percent of the total): water < 0.01%; 1 M MgCl2 = 0.3-1.1%; 1 M CH3COONa = 0.3-0.9%; 0.04 M NH4Cl (in 25% CH3COOH) = 0.9-1.4%; and 30% H2O2 - 0.02 M HNO3 = 4.5-9.0%. Specific radioactivity of the most efficiently bioaccumulating plant species did not exceed 4.0 kBq kg 1 (dry weight biomass). These correspond to the soil-to-plant transfer factor (TF) values up to 44.4 × 10 4 (Bq kg 1 crop, d.w.)/(Bq kg 1 soil, d.w.). Aggregated transfer factor (Tag) of the average sample of the whole crop harvested from defined area was 0.5 × 10 5 (Bq kg 1 d.w. crop)/(Bq m 2 soil). It can be concluded that low mobility of radiocesium in analysed soil type, confirmed by sequential extraction analyses, is the main hindrance for practical application of autochthonous plants as a phytoremediation tool for aged contaminated area of non-cultivated sites. Plant cover can efficiently serve only as a soil surface-stabilising layer, mitigating the migration of radiocesium into the surrounding environment.
