Opis:
The cyclotron of nuclear medicine research group at the Agricultural, Medical and Industrial Research School (AMIRS) has been producing several radionuclides such as 201Tl, 67Ga, 18F and 81Rb for nuclear medicine centers. Gas targets are utilized in a variety of cyclotron producing radionuclides which are used in nuclear medicine centers. We report a method for the design and manufacture of a cyclotron gas target which facilitates both the collection and processing of the krypton gas target as well as the desired 81Rb. In this study a gas target was designed for routine production of 81Rb (for a 81Rb/81mKr generator) through the nuclear reaction natKr(p,2n)81Rb → 81mKr. The incident energy of protons on the target was 26.5 MeV. The gas target was made of stainless steel. The length of the target was 251 mm with double titanium windows, 20 μm in thickness. A production yield of 3.18±0.27 mCi/μA·h was obtained which was more than 80% of the calculated yield (4.1 mCi/μA·h).

Opis:
The aim of radiotherapy is to maximize the dose applied to the tumor while keeping the dose to the surrounding healthy tissue as low as possible. To further enhance dose to a tumor, techniques to radiosensitization of the tumor, using high atomic number elements, have been proposed. The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of using gold nanoparticles as a contrast agent on tumor dose enhancement when the tissue is irradiated by a typical mono energy X-ray beam. To improve the conventional radiotherapy enhancement of the absorbed dose in a tumor tissue and to spare the skin and normal tissues during irradiation in the presence of concentration agent, a model based on a Monte Carlo N-Particle eXtended (MCNPX) computer code has been designed to simulate the depth dose in a phantom containing an assumed tumor. Test was carried out in two phases. In phase 1, verification of this model using the MCNPX was evaluated by comparing the obtained results with those of the published reports. In phase 2, gold was introduced into assumed tumor inside the phantom at different depths in the simulation program. Simulation was performed for four different concentrations of gold nanoparticles using a low mono-energetic parallel beam of synchrotron radiation. The obtained results show that the optimum energy for dose enhancement is found to be around 83–90 keV for all gold concentrations. The dose enhancement factor is increased linearly with concentration and diminished in depth along the central beam in the tumor. This approach of introducing contrast agents in conventional radiotherapy could hopefully prepare new treatment planning and improve the efficiency of tumor therapy.

Opis:
Thallium-201 is of great interest in nuclear medicine for diagnostic purposes. It is produced by the 203Tl(p,3n)201Pb nuclear reaction. Since the target for 201Tl production is a solid target and the maximum beam current for the irradiation has a direct relation with its temperature surface, therefore, the control of temperature during the irradiation is essential. Designing a proper cooling system is one of the important and determining parameters in radionuclide production efficiency. Non-controlled temperature would cause melting and consequently loss of target materials that could be very costly especially when an isotopically enriched material is used. In this study, the heat transfer and temperature distribution on the target has been simulated based on a computational fluid dynamics (CDF) code for the thermal behavior of the target during the irradiation and under the different beam currents, cooling flow rates and target designing. The results on the routinely used target for the production of 201Tl in AMIRS, showed that there was a good linearity between proton beam currents (in the range of 100–350 mi A) and maximum temperature on the thallium target (345–458 K). The results also showed that the flow rate of the cooling water can be brought down (from routinely used 45 L/min) to 15 L/min without any risk of melting of target material.

Opis:
The initial experiments conducted in the late 1960's at Radiation Dynamics, Inc. (now IBA Industrial, Inc.) showed that by removing the pigment from a radiation curable coating formulation, the same binder system could be used as a matrix system for electron beam (EB) cured fiber reinforced composites. Recently, the binder systems used for EB curable coatings have also been successfully used (without pigments) as the matrices for EB and X-ray cured fiber composites. Insights gained from the development of coatings were translated into desirable properties for matrix materials. For example, understanding the surface wetting characteristics of a coating facilitated the development of a matrix that would wet fibers; the development of coatings that would adhere to rigid substrates as metal while being bent, as for coil coatings, and which would exhibit impact resistance when cured on a metal also imparted impact resistance to cured composite materials. Thermal analyses conducted on the coating binder cured at low energies were consistent with analyses performed on thick cross-sections as used for matrices. The configuration of the final product then dictated the modality of curing, be it low-energy EB for coatings or higher energy EB or X-ray curing for composites. In industrial radiation chemistry, one deals with monomers and oligomers (similar to 102 and similar to 103 to 104 Daltons molecular weight, respectively). Thus, one can approach the development of coating binders or matrix systems as one would approach the synthesis of organic polymers. The desired final material is a fully cured and cross-linked polymer. In contrast, concepts involved in “formulating” are often derived from dealing with high molecular weight polymers (similar to 105 + Daltons) in which intense mechanical mixing is used to bring different ingredients together. When synthesizing a radiation curable coating or matrix system, greater attention is given to microphase compatibility as reflected in the microhomogeneity of the entire material.

Most people spend the majority of their time in indoor environments where the level of harmful pollutants is often significantly higher than outdoors. Radon (222Rn) and its decay products are the example of radioactive pollutants. These radioisotopes are the main source of ionizing radiation in non-industrial buildings. The aim of the study was to determine the impact of air-conditioning system on radon and its progeny concentrations and thus on the effective dose. The measurements were carried out in the auditorium at the Environmental Engineering Faculty (Lublin University of Technology, Poland). Measurements of radon and its progeny (in attached and unattached fractions) as well as measurements of the following indoor air parameters were performed in two air-conditioning (AC) operation modes: AC ON and AC ON/OFF. The air supply rate and air recirculation were taken into consideration. The separation of radon progeny into attached and unattached fractions allowed for determining, respectively, the dose conversion factor (DCF) and the inhalation dose for teachers and students in the auditorium. A considerable increase of the mean radon progeny concentrations from 1.2 Bq/m3 to 5.0 Bq/m3 was observed in the AC ON/OFF mode compared to the AC ON mode. This also resulted in the increase of the inhalation dose from 0.005 mSv/y to 0.016 mSv/y (for 200 h/year). Furthermore, the change of the air recirculation rate from 0% to 80% resulted in a decrease of the mean radon concentration from 30 Bq/m3 to 12 Bq/m3 and the reduction of the mean radon progeny concentration from 1.4 Bq/m3 to 0.8 Bq/m3. This resulted in the reduction of the inhalation dose from 0.006 mSv/y to 0.003 mSv/y.

This work reports results from comparative Mossbauer studies of as-deposited and annealed Fe100.xGax (10 less - than or equal to x less - than or equal to 35) high magnetostrictive thin films of constant thickness (50 plus or minus 2 nm). Films were grown on Si(100) substrates using a co-sputtering and evaporation chamber where Fe has been sputtered and Ga was evaporated. During growth of films, a magnetic field of 65 kA/m has been applied in the plane of the film. Annealed films have been obtained by heating in vacuum for 1 h at 350 centigrade without magnetic field. After annealing, the saturation field of the Fe-Ga films has been significantly reduced. By means of the 57Fe CEMS technique the contributions from several phases have been found: Fe-Ga A2 (bcc), traces of DO3 phase, a gallium-rich disordered phase and iron oxides (both geothite and magnetite). For the sample with x = 26.5 the heat treatment reduces the DO3 phase content whereas for the film with x = 16.4 the opposite tendency has been observed. Mossbauer results were compared with XRD and MOKE findings.

A Proton Beam Imaging System (ProBImS) is under development at the Institute of Nuclear Physics, Polish Academy of Sciences (IFJ PAN). The ProBImS will be used to optimize beam delivery at IFJ PAN proton therapy facilities, delivering two-dimensional distributions of beam profiles. The system consists of a scintillator, optical tract and a sensitive CCD camera which digitally records the light emitted from the proton-irradiated scintillator. The optical system, imaging data transfer and control software have already been developed. Here, we report preliminary results of an evaluation of the DuPont Hi-speed thick back screen EJ 000128 scintillator to determine its applicability in our imaging system. In order to optimize the light conversion with respect to the dose locally deposited by the proton beam in the scintillation detector, we have studied the response of the DuPont scintillator in terms of linearity of dose response, uniformity of light emission and decay rate of background light after deposition of a high dose in the scintillator. We found a linear dependence of scintillator light output vs. beam intensity by showing the intensity of the recorded images to be proportional to the dose deposited in the scintillator volume.

Basing on alanine solid state/electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) dosimetry, a supplementary method of cumulatively recording the therapeutic dose received by ocular cancer patients undergoing fractionated proton radiotherapy is proposed. By applying alanine dosimetry during the delivery of consecutive fractions, the dose received within each fraction can be read out by EPR spectrometry and a fi nal permanent cumulative record of the total dose delivered obtained. The dose response of the alanine detector was found to be practically independent on its position within the extended proton Bragg peak region. Dose measurements based on entrance dose recorded in proton beams individually formed for each patient are presented. The described method will be applied as a complementary Quality Assurance procedure for patients undergoing proton radiotherapy at the Institute of Nuclear Physics, Polish Academy of Sciences, Krakow, Poland (IFJ PAN).

The main object of interest was a typical fuel assembly, which constitutes a core of the nuclear reactor. The aim of the paper is to describe the phenomena and calculate thermal-hydraulic characteristic parameters in the fuel assembly for a European Pressurized Reactor (EPR). To perform thermal-hydraulic calculations, the RELAP5 code was used. This code allows to simulate steady and transient states for reactor applications. It is also an appropriate calculation tool in the event of a loss-of-coolant accident in light water reactors. The fuel assembly model with nodalization in the RELAP5 (Reactor Excursion and Leak Analysis Program) code was presented. The calculations of two steady states for the fuel assembly were performed: the nominal steady-state conditions and the coolant flow rate decreased to 60% of the nominal EPR flow rate. The calculation for one transient state for a linearly decreasing flow rate of coolant was simulated until a new level was stabilized and SCRAM occurred. To check the correctness of the obtained results, the authors compared them against the reactor technical documentation available in the bibliography. The obtained results concerning steady states nearly match the design data. The hypothetical transient showed the importance of the need for correct cooling in the reactor during occurrences exceeding normal operation. The performed analysis indicated consequences of the coolant flow rate limitations during the reactor operation.

The nano-porosity structure of several non-crystalline opal samples of different origin was investigated with positronium atoms. The obtained data show that the structure depends on both the kind of opal (precious, common or hyalite) as well as the place of its creation (sedimentary or volcanic rocks). The sizes of the pores "seen" by positronium atoms are relatively small, not greater than about 1 nm for all studied samples which may suggest that the pores are located inside the silica matter from which the samples are made. Moreover, the pores detected in the "sedimentary" precious opals are smaller and have less diverse sizes than those found in 'sedimentary" common opals and "volcanic' precious opals.

Positron annihilation lifetime measurements were conducted in situ while two gasses (nitrogen and oxygen, respectively) were introduced into the SBA-15 porous silica sample. Slow changes in lifetime spectra were observed during a long lasting gas interaction with the sample. Introduced gases slowly filled the free volumes, starting from the smallest ones, especially small micropores. In the presence of a gas, the rate of change of ortho-positronium (o-Ps) and unbound positron intensity was larger than the rate of change of lifetime. This suggests the existence of an additional process, which reduces the number of ortho-positronium atoms due to the interaction with the gas. Moreover, the process of filling pores with gas was slower than the process of emptying them while the gas was pumped out.
