Opis:
The main aim of this work is to investigate the use of new lanthanum bromide (LaBr3) in whole body PET (WB-PET) scanners and to compare the obtained results with those for BGO and LSO crystals which are currently used in conventional and dedicated PET systems. Our results show that there is a gain in noise effective count rate (NECR) arising from the reduced scatter and random fractions in a LaBr3 scanner. The spatial resolution of the WB-PET with LaBr3 is slightly worse than the LSO and BGO crystals because of its low density and effective atomic number. But our study showed the increased NECR, excellent energy resolution and low decay time of LaBr3 which promise a significant improvement in WB-PET performances especially for narrow coincidence windows.

Opis:
The presence of high Z material adjacent to soft tissue, when submitted to irradiation, enhances locally the absorbed dose in these soft tissues. Such an effect occurs due to the outscattering of photoelectrons from the high Z material. Polymer gel (PG) dosimeters were used to investigate this effect. Analytic calculations to estimate the dose enhancement were performed. Samples containing a polymer gel with 0.005 gAu/gPG and a pure polymer gel were irradiated using an X-ray beam produced by 150 kV, filtered with 4 mm Al and 5 mm Cu, which resulted in an approximately 20% greater absorbed dose in the samples with gold in comparison to those with the pure polymer gel. The analytic calculations resulted in a dose enhancement factor of approximately 30% for the gold concentration of 0.005 gAu/gPG.

Opis:
It appears that in microscopic calculations hadrons are continuously emitted from the whole reaction volume. Different species decouple at different times. At RHIC energies significant fractions of both mesons and baryons are emitted from the surface region within the first two fm/c. The hadrons contribute differently to the formation and evolution of the anisotropic flow, which can be decomposed into three components: (i) flow created by hadrons emitted from the surface at the onset of the collision; (ii) flow produced by jets; (iii) hydrodynamic flow. Due to these features, e.g., the elliptic flows of mesons and baryons have different transverse momentum dependences. Comparison with experimental data reveals that centrality, rapidity, and transverse momentum dependences of the anisotropic flow are reproduced, at least qualitatively, by the microscopic models.

Opis:
In December 2001, a 5 kW beam was accelerated for the first time at GANIL. This performance was achieved after the increase of SSC2 dee voltage from 170 kV to 200 kV. Moreover, several technical developments have been done, to improve the operation with high intensity beams, and a new electrostatic deflector is under construction in order to reduce losses and activation at the exit of SSC2. This paper presents an overview of these works and the main results on the last accelerated beams.
