Opis:
Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectra of the CaB4O7 and LiCaBO3 glasses containing 0.5 and 1.0 mol.% CuO and MnO2 impurity compounds were investigated at room temperature. The glasses with CaB4O7:Cu, LiCaBO3:Cu, CaB4O7:Mn and LiCaBO3:Mn compositions were produced from the corresponding polycrystalline compounds using standard glass synthesis and technological conditions developed by the authors. The EPR spectral parameters of the Cu2+ and Mn2+ centres in both glasses containing 0.5 and 1.0 mol.% CuO and MnO2 doping oxides were determined. Analysis of EPR spectral parameters shows that Cu impurity is incorporated into the CaB4O7 and LiCaBO3 glass network as isolated Cu2+ (3d9, 2D5/2) paramagnetic ions. The Cu2+ ions occupy Ca(Li) sites of the borate glass network coordinated by six O2− anions with geometry of elongated octahedron (D4h symmetry) due to the Jahn- -Teller effect. The EPR spectra of the Mn-doped CaB4O7 and LiCaBO3 glasses are virtually identical and typical of all oxide glasses activated with Mn2+ (3d5, 6S5/2) ions. Observed EPR spectra in the Mn-doped glasses were attributed to isolated Mn2+ (1) centres (geff ≅ 4.3) in octahedral Ca(Li) sites with a strong (fully) rhombic distortion, isolated Mn2+ (2) centres (geff ≅ 2.0) in octahedral Ca(Li) sites with nearly cubic local symmetry as well as pairs and small clusters of the Mn2+ ions, coupled by magnetic dipolar and exchange interactions. On the basis of the obtained results and analysis of referenced data, the local structure of the Cu2+ and Mn2+ centres in the borate glasses have been proposed.

Opis:
Two kinds of photon active glasses were investigated using positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS). Both kinds of glasses were prepared using a sol-gel technique, doped by complex of ruthenium tris bipyridyl chloride. Glasses differed from the initial matrix: the first one was prepared using silicon oxide while the second one - zircon oxide. The ortho-positronium (o-Ps) lifetime and intensities were determined from lifetime spectra. Different porosity structure concluded from PALS measurements was found in both cases. In the silica based glasses small free volumes (angstrom size) and pores (from 1 to 10 nm) existed in the material. On the contrary, in zirconia based glasses small intermolecular voids were produced in the structure only, independently of the way of material preparation.

Opis:
Subsurface properties of 57Fe81Mo9Cu1B9 metallic glass were studied by conversion electron and conversion X-ray Mössbauer spectrometry. They were applied to both surfaces of the ribbons. Deviations in structural surface features are exhibited via different contents of crystalline phases, which were identifi ed as bcc-Fe and magnetite. The presence of small ferromagnetic particles was also suggested from magnetic measurements. An infl uence of irradiation with 130-keV N+ ions on surface properties of the as-quenched alloy is also discussed.

Opis:
Two different types of window glasses have been investigated as possible routine dosimeters in the range of 1-50 kGy. Glass samples were irradiated with 3.4 MeV and 8.4 MeV electron beams and the results compared with those obtained by 60Co gamma irradiation. Due to the strong optical absorption at wavelengths ess than 310 nm, even at low doses, optical measurements were limited to the range 320-700 nm. In both types of glasses, irradiation induced two absorption bands around 410 and 600 nm the intensities of which are proportional to dose; the 600 nm band being less sensitive to radiation. These bands have been attributed to non bridging oxygen hole centres existing in two different configurations. Because of the rapid fading of the optical absorbance observed at room temperature immediately after irradiation (greater than 15% in two days), the samples underwent a post-irradiation thermal treatment (150 graduate C for 20 min) to improve the stability of absorbance. The fading characteristics of the irradiated and thermally treated glasses, kept in the dark at room temperature, were studied for several weeks. A fast decay, whose intensity depends on the type and energy of the ionizing radiation, was observed for few days after irradiation and thermal treatment, followed by a much slower decay. The results show that this kind of material could be used as routine dosimeters within a certain dose range, as long as proper calibrations are made for each batch of glass and the appropriate precautions are taken when doing calibration and performing routine dosimetry.
