Opis:
Gamma scanning and radiotracer applications are very effective and inexpensive tools to understand and optimize the process as well as troubleshoot the various types of problems in many chemical, petrochemical industries and refineries. These techniques are non-invasive; hence, the problems can be pinpointed online, which leads to reduce the downtime, schedule the shutdown and maintenance of the plant equipment, rendering huge economic benefits. In a leading refinery of India, the catalytic cracking unit (CCU) was malfunctioning. It was suspected by the refinery engineers that the catalyst powder was being carried over to the fractionator, which could have led to erosion of the fractionator column internals resulting in their rupture, and consequentially, to the fire hazard. To understand the flow behaviour of the catalyst powder and to ensure the mechanical integrity, catalyst accumulation and choking, both radiotracer study and gamma scanning of the CCU reactor was carried out. The reactor consists of a riser, three primary cyclones and three secondary cyclones. Gamma scanning of the reactor was carried out with the help of an automatic gamma scanner using 1.8 GBq of Co-60 sealed source. Results showed that the catalyst powder was accumulated in one of the secondary cyclones and uneven density distribution was observed in another secondary cyclone. The radiotracer study was carried out using the irradiated catalyst powder as a radiotracer, which contains 0.9 GBq of Na-24. The radiotracer was injected in the reactor through the specially fabricated injection system. Radiation measurement was done using the thermally insulated and collimated NaI(Tl) scintillation detectors located at various strategic locations coupled to a multi-detector data acquisition system. The data were mathematically analysed. It was confirmed that the catalyst powder was accumulated in one of the secondary cyclones with no flow downwards. This resulted in excess powder available to travel along with hydrocarbon towards fractionator. Since the quantity of powder released through the hydrocarbon outlet of CCU was higher than the designed value, the catalyst powder was observed in various zones of the fractionator. Mathematical modelling of the radiotracer data obtained at various locations corroborated the scanning results; also, the flow pattern was obtained. Partially blocked secondary cyclone showed plug flow with recirculation; normal working cyclone had plug flow behaviour and the vortex breaker showed parallel flow.

Opis:
In the present work, we report the results of a spin trapping ESR study of four essential oils widely used for skin care products such as creams and bath salts. The studied essential oils are Rosmarini aetheroleum (rosemary), Menthae piperitae aetheroleum (mint), Lavandulae aetheroleum (lavender), and Thymi aetheroleum (thyme). Fenton reaction in the presence of ethanol was used to generate free radicals. The N-tert- -butyl-α-phenylnitrone (PBN) was used as a spin trap. In the Fenton reaction, the rosemary oil had the lowest effect on radical adduct formation as compared to the reference Fenton system. Since essential oils are known to be lipid soluble, we also conducted studies of essential oils in Fenton reaction in the presence of lipids. Two model lipids were used, namely 1,2-dioleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (DOPC) and 1,2-dipalmitoyl-sn- -glycero-3-phosphocholine (DPPC). The obtained results suggested that in the presence of DOPC lipids, the •OH and PBN/•CHCH3(OH) radicals are formed in both phases, that is, water and lipids, and all the studied essential oils affected the Fenton reaction in a similar way. Whereas, in the DPPC system, the additional type of PBN/X (aN = 16.1 G, aH = 2.9 G) radical adduct was generated. DFT calculations of hyperfi ne splittings were performed at B3LYP/6-311+G(d,p)/EPR-II level of theory for the set of c-centered PBN adducts in order to identify PBN/X radical.

In Poland, the consumption of polymers like polyethylene, polypropylene and polystyrene amounts is nearly one million tons per year. Most of the products made of these polymers becomes wastes in short time. Polymers are very resistant to biodegradation, therefore technologies of their transformation into useful materials should be developed. In our Institute, the technology of catalytic cracking of polyolefines into liquid fuels is studied. Experiments are concentrated on the selection of proper catalyst and on the construction of continuously operated installation for cracking of polyolefine wastes. Experiments on the selection of catalyst were performed in a laboratory scale batch reactor. A big laboratory installation with a yield of ca. 1 kg/h of liquid products was tested with positive results and plans are to construct a pilot plant installation with a yield of 30 kg/h of liquid products. The products of catalytic cracking are separated in a distillation column into gas, gasoline, light oil and heavy oil fractions. The gas is used for heating the reactor. The heavy oil fraction is recycled to the reactor and the gasoline and light oil fractions are the final products. The gasoline fraction can be used as a component of motor gasoline and the light oil fraction can be used as a component of diesel fuel or as a heating oil.

Opis:
Radon exhalation from ground is a process dependent on the emanation and migration of radon through ambient air. Most studies on radon exhalation from soil were performed regarding the influence of meteorological and soil parameters. As radon exhalation rate can be affected by the internal properties of the sample, it may also be influenced by the exhalation chamber geometry such as volume-to-area (V/S) ratio or other construction parameters. The measurements of radon exhalation from soil were made using different constructions of accumulation chamber and two types of radon monitors: RAD7 (Durridge) and AlphaGUARD PQ2000PRO (Genitron). The measurements were performed on one site in two locations and approximately at the same time. The first tests did not show the correlations of exhalation rate values and the chamber’s construction parameters and their geometrical dimensions. However, when examining the results, it seems that there are still too many factors that might have affected the process of radon exhalation. The future experiments are planned to be conducted in controlled laboratory conditions.

Opis:
The power output of plasma experiments and fusion reactors is a crucial parameter. It is determined by neutron yields that are proportional and directly related to the fusion yield. The number of emitted neutrons should be known for safety reasons and for neutron budget management. The PF-1000 is the large plasma facility based on the plasma focus phenomenon. PF-1000 is operating in the Institute of Plasma Physics and Laser Microfusion in Warsaw. Neutron yield changes during subsequent pulses, which is immanent part of this type device and so it must be monitored in terms of neutron emission. The reference diagnostic intended for this purpose is the silver activation counter (SAC) used for many years. Our previous studies demonstrated the applicability of radio-yttrium for neutron yield measurements during the deuterium campaign on the PF-1000 facility. The obtained results were compared with data from silver activation counter and shown linear dependence but with some protuberances in local scale. Correlation between results for both neutron monitors was maintained. But the yttrium monitor registered the fast energy neutron that reached measurement apparatus directly from the plasma pinch. Based on the preliminary experiences, the yttrium monitor was designed to automatically register neutron-induced yttrium activity. The MCNP geometrical model of PF-1000 and yttrium monitor were both used for calculation of the activation coefficient for yttrium. The yttrium monitor has been established as the permanent diagnostic for monitoring fusion reactions in the PF-1000 device.

In the present work, twin screw extruded films of PLLA and PCL biodegradable homopolymers and 50:50 (w:w) blend were irradiated with gamma rays from Co-60 and electron beam at doses in the range of 50 to 500 kGy in order to evaluate the effect of irradiations on homopolymers and blend. The FTIR results have shown that this technique was neither sensitive enough to observe the degradation promoted by ionizing radiation of studied homopolymers and blends and, nor on the miscibility of the blends. Wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) of PCL samples, non-irradiated and irradiated showed two strongest reflections at angles 2theta = 21.4 degrees centigrade and 2theta = 23.7 degrees centigrade that have been attributed in the literature to the (110) and (200) reflections, respectively. As for extruded non-irradiated and irradiated PLLA, it was observed broad diffusion peaks corresponding to an amorphous polymer. PLLA annealed samples showed reflections at angles 2theta =16.4 degrees centigrade and 2theta =18.7 degrees centigrade previously attributed in the literature to distorted 103 (alfa-form) helices. It was possible to observe slight alteration of the crystallite size of all irradiated samples of PCL in the dose range studied.

Opis:
Polymer nanocomposites containing metal nanoparticles have attracted a great interest due to their unique chemical and physical properties. “Green” chemistry promotes application of natural fibers in such structures, among them cellulose is one of the most frequently used. However, cellulose fabric have ability to absorb moisture, so under certain conditions of humidity and temperature they can be subjected to microbial attack. One of the most popular and best known antibacterial agents is silver, which serves as a potential antibacterial material acting against an exceptionally broad spectrum of bacteria including activity against antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) were grown at the cellulose fibers surface by direct reduction of AgNO3 with electron beam (EB) application. Nanocomposites obtained according to the method described in the text were investigated with X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope with back-scattered electrons detector (SEM-BSE) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) as well as thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) in order to determine influence of different size silver particles on fibers thermal properties.

Opis:
X-ray diffraction measurements and Mossbauer spectroscopy with external magnetic field were carried out on (Cr0.99 57Fe0.01)3+xSi-x alloys. The Mossbauer spectra for A15 type of structure can be described by superposition of single line S(1) and two doublets D(1) and D(2). The relative ratio of the S(1) and D(2) strongly depends on x. The nearest neighbours of these components have been identified. It was shown that 57Fe atoms preferentially locate in Cr positions for x less-than or equal to 0.0, while for x greater 0.0 iron atoms are distributed both in Cr and Si positions. It was shown that, in A15 structure, one Cr atom located in the 57Fe nearest neighbours (n.n.) decreases isomer shift by (0.022 plus or minus 0.002) mm/s, while one Si in n.n. increases isomer shift by (0.09 plus or minus 0.01) mm/s. The measured Mossbauer spectra of bcc Cr-Si indicate that atoms are randomly distributed and can be well described as superposition of single lines, related to various local environments of 57Fe atoms.

Measurements of activity concentrations and speciation of 137Cs in bottom sediments of the Curonian Lagoon were carried out in samples collected in 1999-2003. In addition, the sorption-desorption processes of caesium in disturbed bottom sediments of fresh and sea water systems were investigated in long-term experiments (up to 375 days) in order to better understand the caesium behaviour during the Baltic Sea water flooding events to the Curonian Lagoon. The modified Tessier method was used to study caesium associations with geochemical phases of bottom sediments. The effect of carbonate coatings of bottom sediments on the Cs sorption-desorption process was observed. The comparative analyses of 137Cs solid phase speciation in bottom sediments after 241 and 375 days of the sorption experiment with that of the 137Cs speciation, determined in the same sediment sample before the sorption experiment, indicated that after 375 days of sorption the equilibrium was not reached, however, the Cs distribution in geochemical phases was found to be close to equilibrium. The desorption experiments evidenced the release of caesium into solution from regular exchange complex and transfer from other phases to the frayed edge sites on the layered clay minerals with its further fixation in the crystal lattice. The remobilization of "fixed" caesium was not observed, on the contrary, the redistribution of caesium with its subsequent fixation in clay minerals was observed, and on a time scale its fixation kinetics was comparable with the sorption experiment. This study showed that flooding events of sea water contaminated with caesium can cause a significant accumulation of caesium in the bottom sediments of the Curonian Lagoon and result in the redistribution of 137Cs activity concentration in the bottom sediments from one area to another.

The regulations permit the possibility of utilization of raws and by-products basing upon the level of the natural radioactivity of the examined raws and materials. The article is a survey of the results obtained during the measurements of many types of raws and building materials for almost 30 years by the network of the laboratories in Poland. It is based upon the results stored in the database of the Central Laboratory for Radiological Protection (CLRP), Warsaw. The article tends to outline the radioactivity of the waste materials with respect to other raws and materials used in the construction industry. The article shows the possibilities for the use of by-products originating in the power stations and heat- and power stations (mainly ashes, slag and hinter) in the construction of dwellings and roads.

The microstructure and ordering of alfa-FeCo phase of the nanocrystalline Fe83 xCoxNb3B13Cu1 (x = 6, 25 or 41.5) alloys were investigated. We have stated that á-FeCo phase is atomically ordered in the Fe83 xCoxNb3B13Cu1 (x = 25 or 41.5) samples crystallized by the heat treatment in a furnace. However, after flash annealing (by current or laser) that phase is disordered. Moreover, we have found that Co concentration in the crystalline alfa-FeCo phase strongly depends on Co content in the as-quenched ribbons. The annealing conditions influence also the grain diameter of the crystalline phase. In the nanocrystalline alloys obtained by a flash annealing of the amorphous ribbons finer grains are present.
