Opis:
Being a reflective teacher is a highly appreciated quality of a good teacher. Reflection is considered to be essential in the job of teaching since it prompts to modify and improve the process of teaching and learning. As experts suggest reflective skills can be practiced and developed due to various teacher education models, programs and techniques. One of the techniques is a teacher portfolio that can consist of many tasks provoking teachers and teacher-trainees to reflect on their teaching. This article presents some research on the content of English teacher-trainees’ reflection and their metareflection. The research outcome provides some knowledge of what they reflect upon, if they do at all, and whether they perceive reflection as valuable in the process of learning teaching.

Teaching practice is an important stage in prospective foreign language teacher development. It is an opportunity for reflection on the teaching process as well as for (self) evaluation of one’s teaching competence. Trainees approaching their practicum should be prepared by their educational institutions for the challenges they may face in a real school context. In the article we report on two studies undertaken to obtain an insight into the practicum from the trainee perspective and from the school-based mentor perspective in the hope of identifying areas which require improvement. Descriptions of the design of the two studies and the analyses of their results are preceded by a discussion of the importance of reflection on foreign language teacher competence and the place of practicum in the development of competence.

Opis:
The job of the teacher of Language for Specific Purposes (LSP) requires the ability to teach learners of diverse profiles. Diversity of target groups in training entails diversity of language and learning needs. This paper aims to answer the question: how should LSP teachers be educated so that they can fulfil these needs and expectations? It is suggested that this can be done by preparing and implementing a suitable teaching programme which takes into account the specific character of different educational contexts. The reflections presented here are based on analysis of the Polish educational situation in LSP training. On the basis of these observations, several practice-oriented proposals will be formulated, which could be implemented in the process of language teacher training. Consideration is given, among other issues, to the pedagogical instruction that future LSP teachers need (which depends on the educational context of their future work), the scope of specialist knowledge in the given field that they will find indispensable, and the amount of knowledge of discourse and genre analysis with which they have to be equipped.

Opis:
Becoming a foreign language teacher involves meeting a range of requirements which have mainly been specified in the Decree of the Minister for Science and Higher Education issued on January 17th, 2012, concerning the standards that have to be complied with in teacher education. Education of this kind is still most frequently offered in the course of BA or MA programs in foreign languages, with the crucial caveat that, primarily as a result of decreasing demand for foreign language teachers, this component has been eliminated in many institutions of higher education or students are required to pay for an additional module providing such training. It is assumed that on completion of a BA or MA program as well as obtaining credits for the required courses focusing on pedagogy, a student will have the requisite qualifications to teach a particular foreign language at appropriate educational levels. This implies that, by this time, he or she should have acquired the necessary knowledge, skills and competences, both in the foreign language and in psychological and pedagogical issues, which can ensure effective teaching and learning. The paper aims to subject such assumptions to critical scrutiny, demonstrate that they blatantly fail to take into account the real situation in Polish education, as well as offer some tentative proposals that could enhance the quality of foreign language teacher training in our country.

Opis:
While teacher feedback has got a long established tradition in pedagogic or educational discourse as a form of reflection, it has to be noticed by students to result in raised awareness. Apprehension of teacher feedback depends on its various characteristics such as salience, length, complexity or linguistic features (Swain, 2006a). Thereby its value may be too much engrained in the positivist paradigm of knowledge and language. Sociocultural approaches to learning, resting firmly on constructivist theories of knowledge and interactive theories of language, underscore the centrality of the learner. The agency of the learner places reflection in the form of talks (Moate, 2011) or languaging (Swan, 2006a). The aim of this paper is to present a microgenetic analysis of languaging on the concept of “noticing” (Schmidt, 1990) in teacher training during a methodology class. The working hypothesis is the claim that reflection, in the form of substantiated thinking, presents a potential for developing procedural dimension of teacher language awareness.

Opis:
The study was conducted in a group of second year university students – pre-service teachers of English as a foreign language (EFL). The aim of the study was to investigate how the trainee teachers’ participation in a compulsory SEN-dedicated course delivered online impacted their self-reported concerns and preparedness to implement inclusive teaching practices with foreign language (FL) learners with special educational needs (SEN). A semester-long course was designed and conducted as part of emergency remote instruction during the COVID-19 pandemic. Data was collected online via before and after course questionnaires. Principal component analysis of the preparedness and concerns scales led to a two-factor (F1 – self-efficacy beliefs and knowledge and F2 – attitudes) and a single factor solution (concerns) respectively. The pre- (N=113) and post-course (N=86) online survey responses were compared with regard to all the factors. The analysis showed that the participants’ post-course attitudes were more positive than at the beginning of the course, but the difference was not statistically significant. We observed a statistically significant increase in the trainee teachers’ post-course self-efficacy beliefs and knowledge of inclusion and SEN, with a large effect size. This change was paired with a statistically significant increase in their post-course concerns, with medium effect size for the change. A series of one-way MANOVAs showed that the effect of demographic variables (gender, teaching experience other than during practicum, experience with learners with SEN) on all factors across the two datasets was not statistically significant.

This paper is first of all informative. In the first section, it gives a survey of innovative Master Studies for European secondary teachers, being prepared by an international team from eight countries. Among five main training areas, there are Intercultural Studies, which are to be implemented in another country during a mobility semester. The second section of the paper describes briefly four intercultural modules developed in the EMETTStudies: Education systems in the European Union, Intercultural communication,Selected aspects of European culture and Intercultural education. The third part of the paper gives an example of the teaching material which can be used to raise students’ intercultural awareness. The material is based on a literary text made into a contemporary play, focused on the universal theme of a journey, set in the Polish Tatra Mts. The author of the paper shows how such a material can combine elements of three intercultural modules: Intercultural education, Intercultural communication and Selected aspects of European culture. Finally, the paper points out the role of a language of international communication in the implementation of EMETTStudies during the mobility semester.

Opis:
The present paper deals with the problem of teaching dyslexic learners in EFL classroom. A brief discussion about the nature of the learning prob-lems of dyslexic learners is followed by a report of a survey carried out among 26 EFL teachers of different teaching experience. The question-naire addressed such issues as contacts of the EFL teachers with learners diagnosed as dyslexic, their awareness of the problems such learners en-counter while learning another language, ways of treating dyslexic learners to enhance learning and an availability of the professional advice in that matter etc. The data show that not all of the surveyed EFL teachers feel prepared to the problems emerging from teaching dyslexic learners; some of the ways they choose to overcome the problem are controversial. Many do not know related literature. However, majority of them can rely on the assistance of a school pedagogue or psychologist. Yet, the fact that less than half of the respondents had training in teaching learners with dyslexia during their professional education, whereas at the same time they all report having dyslexic learners in their class, points to the need of introducing the topic to the professional training of foreign language teachers as an obligatory component.

Preparing thoughtful reflective practitioners has become a common concept in the teacher education literature. Prior educational experiences offer excellent opportunity for students to reflect on authentic teaching examples and provide constructive ways to engage in reflective practice. This study examines critical incidents as a tool for developing reflective thinking skills among teacher trainees (N=11). The research on use of critical incidents for training comprised a questionnaire and group discussions. The instrument used for analyzing critical incidents included personal details, factual information and openended questions concerning reasons for and consequences of the incident, associated emotions, reflections connected with it, lessons from this incident and its implications for the future. Overall, although some crucial issues arose, the technique proved useful for training, and was assessed as positive and valuable by the teacher trainees. Some pedagogical implications were formulated regarding problems with understanding the notion of critical incident, previous training of the teacher trainees and the need for a supportive environment.

Innovation in language education, just as in any other discipline, is connected with changes whose primary goal is to make the process of language learning/language teaching more efficient. Examples of such innovations include, for instance, task based instruction, computer assisted language learning or the use of portfolio as a means of assessment. Innovation implies a new, qualitatively different perception of the language learning/ language teaching process, roles of teachers and learners, use of materials etc., hence it is believed to constitute a challenge for language teachers and their professionalism. The present article is an attempt to answer the question whether and to what extent the language teaching profession is actually prepared to deal with innovation.

Opis:
Over the last decade or so, mainly under the influence of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, it has been assumed, often entirely uncritically, that the key goals of foreign language peda-gogy should be the development of multilingualism and multicultural-ism. Although these goals are barely mentioned in the current core cur-riculum and they do not really find a reflection in coursebooks or every-day teaching practice, the pedagogical recommendations stemming from numerous conference presentations, research studies or methodology textbooks for pre-service and in-service teachers indicate that such a sit-uation should be subject to change because it is not sufficiently reflective of the latest theoretical proposals. A question arises, however, to what extent these goals can in fact be accomplished in our educational context in which additional languages are taught and learned as foreign rather than second, and, despite increasing opportunities in this respect, out-of-school contact with such languages is often still very limited. The pa-per aims to address this question, mainly focusing on the difficulties involved in fostering multilingualism and multiculturalism, both with re-spect to the relevant regulations concerning language education in Po-land, everyday realities of foreign language teaching and learning, the limitations of teacher training as well as problems involved in conducting empirical studies.

Opis:
This paper takes data from the first part of a longitudinal study, “Learning and Teaching Foreign Languages in lower secondary school”, conducted by the Educational Research Institute in Warsaw. The sample is large scale and representative at the level of school, which allows us to generalise to the general population with some degree of confidence. From the data several areas appear to give cause for concern. The first is organisation of work in class, where pair and group work were found to be rare. The focus of lessons would currently appear to more often emphasize grammar, vocabulary or receptive skills than productive skills. What is tested does not always seem to reflect what is taught, which suggests that assessment practices may not be fully informed. Motivating learners and engaging them in the lesson is also reported as a cause of dissatisfaction. Teachers were found to hold mixed views regarding the importance of independent learning, which suggests more emphasis needs to be placed on the understanding of learner autonomy. This paper discusses each of these areas in turn, with illustrations from the data, and makes suggestions for how teacher education could be enhanced.

Focused on the subjective dimensions of professional careers, narratives involve identification and interpretation of key events and persons in particular life stories, which stimulate the narrator’s reflexivity and enable them to find connections between episodes and make them meaningful.

In professional research literature learner identity, motivation and autonomy are frequently the focus of attention. Identity is believed to be responsible for beliefs and opinions about the process of language attainment. Although much more has been written on learner identity, teacher identity is usually marginalized. The study summarized in this paper focuses on students – future teachers of English (N=32)- who attend M.A. EFL seminars to obtain full teaching qualifications. The students were asked to give answers to seven questionnaire statements referring to their present teaching careers and their former studies. It appeared that students coming from educational backgrounds other than university frequently show gaps in knowledge of second language acquisition theory and practice. What is more, as the ELT seminars cater mostly for students from institutions outside the university, considerable remedial work is needed in order to make it possible to prepare the students to write their M.A. theses independently.

This article explores the concept of teacher professionalism, focusing primarily on factors motivating teachers to pursue professional development within the framework of formal, organized teacher development programmes offered by educational institutions. Its major purpose is to contribute to a better understanding of motivational issues involved in teacher education, or teacher learning, as it is sometimes referred to. Its other purpose is to liven up a discussion concerning language teacher education as a life-long experience. The article consists of two parts: its theoretical sections focus on the notions of professionalism and a professional, together with the concepts of autonomy and reflection/reflective practice, which are crucial from the point of view of teacher development. Next, factors motivating teachers to continue their development both as professionals and as individuals are addressed. The second part presents and discusses results of a small-scale individual research project which yielded some interesting data pertaining to motivational issues involved in teacher learning.
