The paper presents the value of qualitative studies on the person of the FL teacher since s/he is the one who organizes the whole teaching-learning process and takes the whole responsibility for it. It is of crucial importance, therefore, to collect from teachers as much data as possible by means of which our knowledge about the quality of the whole process could be described, discussed and improved in the best way. Interviews and all types of lesson observations are presented here as the optimal tools to achieve this aim.

Opis:
Becoming a foreign language teacher involves meeting a range of requirements which have mainly been specified in the Decree of the Minister for Science and Higher Education issued on January 17th, 2012, concerning the standards that have to be complied with in teacher education. Education of this kind is still most frequently offered in the course of BA or MA programs in foreign languages, with the crucial caveat that, primarily as a result of decreasing demand for foreign language teachers, this component has been eliminated in many institutions of higher education or students are required to pay for an additional module providing such training. It is assumed that on completion of a BA or MA program as well as obtaining credits for the required courses focusing on pedagogy, a student will have the requisite qualifications to teach a particular foreign language at appropriate educational levels. This implies that, by this time, he or she should have acquired the necessary knowledge, skills and competences, both in the foreign language and in psychological and pedagogical issues, which can ensure effective teaching and learning. The paper aims to subject such assumptions to critical scrutiny, demonstrate that they blatantly fail to take into account the real situation in Polish education, as well as offer some tentative proposals that could enhance the quality of foreign language teacher training in our country.

The aim of this article is to reflect on the initial training of teachers in line with the assumptions of multilingual didactics. A definition of plu-rilingual competence is given at the beginning of this article. We then discuss briefly about the main assumptions of plurilingual teaching. The next part of the article deals with the philosophy of educating future foreign language teachers in philological studies, which should be largely based on reflection. The article concludes with the analysis of data obtained from students participating in teacher education classes. The aim of the study was to diagnose whether the self-awareness of potential subjects, as given to them by the multilingual competence, could contribute to innovative teaching.

The aim of the article is to discuss the main Polish educational legislation aimed at promoting diversity and individualization in the the process of schooling. The focus is on dealing with heterogeneity, which has become frequent in Polish schools and kindergartens. This includes various aspects concerning differentiation in children and young people, such as individual developmentental characteristics, gender, socio-cultural environment, special educational needs or giftedness. Heterogeneity requires individualization of the educational process, which also applies to the teaching of foreign languages. This poses a challenge for many teachers, including foreign language teachers. In many respects Polish legislation regulates how to deal with heterogeneity and individualization in the educational context.

Opis:
The subject of this article is the concept of learning by teaching used for the training of teachers of German. Foreign language teacher training is currently no doubt one of the most important challenges resulting from the educational policies of countries within the European Union. In Poland, the necessity for remedial, preventive or promotional actions with regard to the teaching of foreign languages seems to pertain first of all to the teachers of German (and their training facilities), as the justification for German’s presence in the Polish schools is increasingly being questioned. Unfortunately, there are numerous examples in school practice which show that the contemporary approach to the teaching ofGerman as a foreign language continues to follow a traditional, transmission model, with great perseverance and consistency. In order to change this situation, it is necessary to find some effective educational solutions for foreign language teacher training. The search should focus on those educational tools which will enable teachers-to be to meet their teaching goals and conduct the teaching process in line with the current theories of language teaching. One of many such tools, which I have decided to examine more closely, is the concept of learning by teaching (Lernen durch Lehren), initiated by Jean Pol Martin. This paper presents the main assumptions of the concept of LdL and describes a training programme (developed following the LdL approach) carried out with the students of faculty of German who are future teachers ofGerman. The conclusions drawn seem quite promising for teacher training.

Opis:
The study was conducted in a group of second year university students – pre-service teachers of English as a foreign language (EFL). The aim of the study was to investigate how the trainee teachers’ participation in a compulsory SEN-dedicated course delivered online impacted their self-reported concerns and preparedness to implement inclusive teaching practices with foreign language (FL) learners with special educational needs (SEN). A semester-long course was designed and conducted as part of emergency remote instruction during the COVID-19 pandemic. Data was collected online via before and after course questionnaires. Principal component analysis of the preparedness and concerns scales led to a two-factor (F1 – self-efficacy beliefs and knowledge and F2 – attitudes) and a single factor solution (concerns) respectively. The pre- (N=113) and post-course (N=86) online survey responses were compared with regard to all the factors. The analysis showed that the participants’ post-course attitudes were more positive than at the beginning of the course, but the difference was not statistically significant. We observed a statistically significant increase in the trainee teachers’ post-course self-efficacy beliefs and knowledge of inclusion and SEN, with a large effect size. This change was paired with a statistically significant increase in their post-course concerns, with medium effect size for the change. A series of one-way MANOVAs showed that the effect of demographic variables (gender, teaching experience other than during practicum, experience with learners with SEN) on all factors across the two datasets was not statistically significant.

Opis:
In the pedagogical and glottodidactic literature numerous publications have been devoted to the competences of the teacher, their roles, functions, ways of working with the learner, teaching strategies, teaching styles, class management styles, and finally, models of teacher education. However, it seems that in the vast majority of these publications the authors concentrated on the so-called hard competences, valuing them more than soft skills, and neglecting, or even marginalising, the range and particular components which possibly play a crucial role in the initiation and development of didactic cooperation between the teacher and the learner. At the same time these soft skills are perhaps able to some extent compensate for what is lacking in the range of the teacher hard competences. This article presents the theoretical background and an outline of a research project concerning FL teacher competences. The glottodidactic process is treated as a kind of game where the most important for the teacher in this ludic approach is ludic competence. The article presents hypotheses and research questions which are to be verified in a research planned for the coming year.

Opis:
In an era of dynamically changing socio-economics and technological progress, many aspects of school education are being transformed. Teachers are required to be professional in the form of a demand for increasingly higher professional qualifications and competences, but are also required to fulfil specific social roles. These new determinants of the functioning of education create difficulties in the construction of the teacher's identity because the changes which are being introduced disturb professional stability and cause fears about the future. The challenge is to try to answer universal questions about the professional identity of the teacher, the ability to combine an exceptional sense of service, vocation and mission. This situation affects teachers of German and other foreign languages (FL). The aim of this paper is to show how teachers of German as a FL perceive the changing school and how they assess the educational process that they co-create. Through biographical interviews, analyzed within the framework of Rubacha’s social role model (2000), an attempt is made to answer the question of how the social role of German teachers is changing as a result of the educational reform initiated in 2017 and what dilemmas are being caused by the changing role of the teacher. Statements from participants of the study will be presented that illustrate the disorder of stabilization of the profession, which results in a critical attitude to the changing situation in school, a disturbed attitude to the world, culture and other people. Impairment of the professional stabilization of German teachers is viewed in the context of the concept of their social role.

This article aims to discuss the problem of a relationship between reflection and identification in the community of EFL teaching practitioners. The basic tenet is that reflection enables individuals to construct and supply reification to community knowledge, which, in turn, allows for their identification as legitimate members of the community. Identity is neither static nor pre-given. It is built as one moves through life and changes according to one’s environmental needs, one’s interests and interactions. To expound and exemplify these tenets, two samples of conversations in a community of language teaching practitioners are analyzed. The analysis aspires to reveal a dialectic relationship between the processes of reflection and identification.

Opis:
Modern language policy in Europe has put forward the concept of multilingualism, and with this plurilingual competence. The definitions of both phenomena can be found in numerous documents of the Council of Europe, especially in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. The authors of this document describe multilingual communication in some detail, where the native speaker user is beyond the scale. A lot of attention is currently being given to issues of multilingualism in education, with numerous articles, suggestions for teaching activities and tools to develop related skills. This article raises the question of the preparation of future teachers of languages which will be taught as the second foreign language (L3) and how plurilingual competence can be developed in the classroom. The study, conducted among students of Romance languages answers the following questions. Are students, who are future L3 language teachers, adequately prepared to develop plurilingual competence in their students? Do they have the appropriate knowledge and practical skills to do this? What are their beliefs regarding the role of different languages when teaching the L3 target language?
