Opis:
Refining reading comprehension skills is one of the basic tasks that students of foreign languages and their teachers face. Some of the texts offered in students’ books do not make pupils interested in the topic, motivated or encouraged enough to develop their reading comprehension ability. The reason is that these texts are compulsory students have to read them which thus makes the readings less interesting. Learning foreign languages essentially should be focused on their posterior use in extracurricular, personal and then occupational conditions. Since reading is necessary, then choosing simple books in a foreign language would be worth considering. Such texts may be perceived by the students differently from the compulsory readings in class. What is more, reading didactically adapted, longer literary texts and their proper reception will certainly be satisfying for the student. This article provides the reader with the examples of using simplified readings in the global and detailed text processing which, in turn, takes into account techniques such as pre-reading, while-reading and post-reading. Furthermore, the article presents the ideas of including Information and Communication Technologies in teaching which influences students’ engagement and allows the teacher to monitor their work.

Opis:
Reading constitutes for one of the most important activities, both in work and in education. There are three major components to reading: comprehension, decoding and reading speed. The relationship between comprehension and reading speed is a tradeoff; after reaching a certain peak one has to decrease for the other to increase. The knowledge of how fast an average person reads can be a useful tool in planning any activity that requires the use of text, such as a language course. To date Polish linguistics lacks relevant research on the speed of reading with comprehension. The following paper presents part of the doctoral project that aims to answer the questions “How fast and with what level of understanding do Poles read?” The paper sums up two research studies which examined the reading speed and comprehension in Polish of students in the final year of high school and in grade 8 of Polish primary school. Both groups read a non-specific text of medium-difficulty about Sherlock Holmes and completed a 9-item comprehension test. The high school students on average scored 77% on the comprehension test with an average reading speed of 173 words per minute (wpm). On the same text, primary school students scored 66% and read at 156 wpm.

This article focuses on the use of literary text in a university context, within a curriculum that prepares future translators and interpreters. The author proposes to reflect on the role of language-dominant literary reading where the literary text can be approached as a linguistic object, an object of wonder and of self-expression. The first two roles are demonstrated in chapter 17 of the novel L’embrasure (2010) by the French-Swiss author D. Loup. The last role, self-expression, is the subject of the analysis of two collections of texts Et, si on faisait un livre ... (2019) and Amoureux des mots (2020), a joint writing project by the author and her students.

Opis:
The aim of the article is to present the theoretical foundations underlying our didactic work, part of the European project DECLAME’FLE, and its objectives. The proposed reflection concerns the possibility of developing reading practices in FL among readers who are learners of French as a foreign language. The chosen approach exploits the concept of so-called literary reading, oriented towards a theoretical-aesthetic analysis of the text. In the school context, this analysis and interpretation is usually done in dialogue with other readers. However, in the case of personal reading, the reader-learner chooses their texts freely and is not supervised in the activity. We argue that media resources can be an effectively used by learners in their reading and in the analytical and reflective tasks that follow. Based on observation categories from discourse analysis and with reference to research on literary reading, we propose exercises for (future) teachers of French as a foreign language. Their aim is to model the reading of journalist and popular critical discourse in order to draw information from it about the book, the author and the presence of the book in the public space, observe the discourse strategies used and integrate them, in order to be able to talk about reading experiences and make presentations of appreciation of texts.

Opis:
Reading is an important element of independent work on the language, but offering students additional reading to improve their linguistic and cultural competences is an extremely difficult task, due to the evolving tastes of young people and the variability of the media they use. Given the popularity of manga and digital comics in France, Romance philology students were asked to read a series selected from the webtoons.com/fr platform in French. A survey was then carried out to find out their views on how this tool could be used in French language learning. The results of the survey clearly indicate that the webtoons.com/fr platform can be used as an effective tool for learning French. According to the respondents, reading the selected series allowed them, above all, to develop lexical resources and was also an enjoyable pastime that increased motivation to learn the language. Students also paid attention to the combination of word and image, appreciating both the aesthetic and practical side of reading digital comics. Finally, the practicality of using the platform, its ease of use and accessibility was emphasised.

Opis:
This theoretical article presents a case for a new approach to the teaching of word recognition in English as a foreign language to young learners in Polish early years education, arguing that there is a need for greater attention to explicit instruction in alphabetic principles, selected phonics and decoding skills. Research in first language (L1) English and foreign language (L2) development of word recognition skills is outlined. Differences between the orthographies of Polish and English are highlighted. Approaches used in L1 early reading instruction are contrasted with those commonly applied in L2 settings. The need for more explicit instruction is rationalized on the basis of a brief description of impressions from 20 hours of classroom observation. The second part of the paper presents some principles for the design of materials to introduce alphabetic principles of English and elements of phonics to support word recognition, with examples. The ability to recognize words rapidly and with ease is a key skill, which, unless mastered early, could potentially have a negative impact on the whole of a child’s language education.

The aim of the article is to summarize current trends in research on advanced skills in reading and writing academic texts and to analyze the ways in which a research paper may be explored by students of modern language studies at master’s degree level. The cited examples of strategies for reconstructing the logic of a research paper refer to the perception and expression of knowledge from a specialized field in verbal interactions, after completing a task which combines reading a selected research paper and using its content in their own text. The main aspect of the analysis is problematization, construed as the principal (structural and logical) axis of an academic text.

Reading literature in a foreign language can present several difficulties for learners. In order to facilitate this activity, we suggest using “literary documents” which help to prepare for reading and understanding and which help to develop students’ self-confidence. The objective is to establish reading skill in a foreign language through the transfer of strategies and the acquisition of contextual knowledge. Based on experiments carried out with several groups of students of French, we were able to observe greater autonomy and better understanding of the texts read.

Opis:
Understanding of literary texts and cultural knowledge acquisition are not the only objectives of French or Francophone literature courses that are part of the university program for future FFL teachers. Reading excerpts of literary texts allows students to develop their key skills, especially their cultural awareness and expression, but also their ability to communicate in a foreign language which is the fundamental goal of language teaching. This study presents an example of pedagogical mediation during which various skill sets (global, professional, key, etc.) are being developed through a number of selected literary texts. Pedagogical mediation is understood as a thoughtful process during which students develop the self-awareness in the role of foreign-language and foreign-culture mediator by acquiring the skills necessary for their personal and professional growth, using the full potential of literary texts. At the same time, by deepening the receptive language skills, reading of texts develops also the productive language skills, i.e. speaking and writing, and to the awareness of students’ didactic thinking. Students’ lesson plans show the level at which they are at the moment on their professional skills development path.
