Opis:
Not so long ago individual difference factors were perceived as relatively stable attributes of learners and it appeared that their impact on the outcomes of the language learning process could be determined in a straightforward manner. There was a widespread belief that it was sufficient to design appropriate data collection instruments, carefully validate them, collect the requisite data concerning the variable in question as well as learners’ attainment, and then apply the procedures of inferential statistics in order to arrive at conclusions in this respect (Dörnyei, 2005). Such findings could later be used as a point of reference for pedagogical implications for teachers. However, the findings of research conducted over the last decade, in particular such that has focused upon motivation and willingness to communicate (e.g., Dörnyei, MacIntyre and Henry, 2015), have clearly demonstrated that the situation is much more complicated, because such factors are subject to constant fluctuations, both over longer periods of time, sequences of classes, single lessons or even specific tasks implemented by teachers. This phenomenon brings with it a number of challenges, not only with respect to designing and conducting empirical studies but also in regard to the steps that should be taken to take account of learners’ individual profiles. The main aim of the present paper is to demonstrate how the dynamic nature of individual difference factors can be accommodated in empirical research as well as elucidating its consequences for the individualization of the process of language learning in the classroom and beyond.

Opis:
Complex Dynamic Systems Theory (CDST), which originated in the natural sciences, has recently been applied to second language acquisition, underlining the interdisciplinary character of this humanistic discipline. According to this theory, language is a complex dynamic system consisting of subsystems which develop in a non-linear way, forming different kinds of supportive, competitive, or conditional relationships. What is more, these subsystems compete for the learner’s limited resources, which causes trade-offs within and between language subsystems, such as complexity, accuracy, and fluency, especially in speech. The present paper constitutes a part of a short series of articles which present different aspects of the same longitudinal case study on the development of L2 English speech at secondary school. The aim of this paper is to examine the relationships between language accuracy and a number of specific measures of syntactic complexity, i.e. general sentence complexity, subordination, coordination, and nominalisation; as well as lexical complexity, i.e. lexical density, sophistication, and variation, in the case of a good, average, and poor language learner at secondary school. In general, the results showed that the relationships between the selected variables fluctuated over time and often differed in the case of a good, average, and poor language learner.

Opis:
The first, theoretical, part of the present paper is devoted to the characteristics of the affective variables of motivation, language anxiety and boredom as situated within the framework of complex dynamic systems. The second part discusses results obtained from a six-month research project intended to examine the effect of Second Life on four English philology students’ changes in levels of motivation, language anxiety and boredom. The data, collected via a personal questionnaire, learner diary and evaluation questionnaire, underwent both quantitative and qualitative analysis.

Opis:
The article is devoted to the development of language complexity in a relatively under-researched area of adolescent writing from the point of view of Complex Dynamic Systems Theory (CDST). It describes the second part of a panel study which aimed to examine the relationships among the average semester growth rates (ASGRs) of specific measures of syntactic and lexical complexity within and between these two subsystems in writing in English as a foreign language at the secondary school level. The study involved the analysis of The Written English Developmental Corpus of Polish Learners (WEDCPL). The corpus, which comprises over 1900 essays, was created on the basis of 21 repeated measurements conducted in a group of 100 secondary school learners during a period of three years. With respect to the specific measures of syntactic and lexical complexity, the study indicated that nominalization developed faster than subordination and coordination, and that lexical variation developed faster than lexical density and sophistication per semester. Moreover, the relationships between the ASGRs of both syntactic and lexical measures were more supportive within than between the subsystems. The main pedagogical implication for English language teachers refers to fostering more coordinated development of language complexity at secondary school in the EFL context.
