Opis:
Despite its growing popularity within the humanities and social sciences, the concept of discourse (and also discourse analysis) continues to be perceived as rather vague by those who are not experts in the domain of discourse analysis. The aim of the present paper is to acquaint non-specialist readers with the multifold, interdisciplinary nature of discourse in order to further consider its usefulness with reference to foreign language pedagogy. It is argued that a wider use of this concept may lead us to a more coherent view of the main issues underlying our field, namely by integrating into our thinking both social and individual communicative practices. This idea is illustrated with selected conceptual tools and the views advanced by leading French discourse analysts (e.g. Charaudeau, 1993, 2010; Maingueneau, 1996, 2005) and, up to this point, mainly exploited in studying the media and public communication. Moreover, the importance of typological distinctions in foreign language pedagogy is stressed and an example of a discursive approach to foreign language instruction is provided. At the same time, attention is drawn to inherent and/or objective limitations on and difficulties in a wider use of the concept of discourse. These problems notwithstanding, the conclusion points to the fact that, given the complexity of our domain, it is hardly conceivable nowadays that we can be content with oversimplified formulae and limited, one-sided theories.

Opis:
In the didactics of languages and cultures, mediation often enters into a relationship with translation. After the publication of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages in 2001, mediation was mainly associated with linguistic transcoding and equated with translation. In the CEFR – Companion volume (2020), the understanding of mediation has been considerably broadened, taking into account the multilingual and multicultural perspective of language use and the conditions for interaction between people with different lifestyles and views. The aim of the paper is to reflect in depth on the nature of the concepts of ‘mediation’ and ‘translation’. Both are interdisciplinary in nature and their main vehicle is language. But there are also many differences between them which do not allow the terms to be used interchangeably. In an analysis of a comparative nature, we will try to show the most important determinants of the mediation and translation process, referring to their use in the context of language learning and teaching.

Opis:
The article describes the glottodidactic aspects of the relationship between language and culture in English textbooks published in Poland from the end of the 18th century to the middle of the 20th century and supplements knowledge about the local history of teaching English as a foreign language. The specific aim of the article is to illustrate changes in the way cultural issues are presented in English language teaching depending on the historical period. To achieve this objective, a qualitative analysis of the cultural content present in historical English textbooks was conducted. Its results were contrasted with three models of cultural education: national, intercultural and transcultural. The content analysis took into account textbooks passages referring to high and low culture in direct (texts and illustrations) and indirect ways (e.g. in grammar exercises). The analyses showed that the way cultural content is presented is derived from the teaching method used in the textbook, the needs of the learners, the institutional-ideological entanglements of language education and the changing state of theoretical knowledge on the role of culture in the glottodidactic process. The article demonstrates that the ability to shape knowledge about other nations, their cultures and representatives in the glottodidactic process was already being conducted in the past.

The tasks that the contemporary teachers of foreign languages face as well as the roles that they should assume as leaders of the educational process are of complex nature. This complexity is a result of numerous social changes and transformational processes. In response to these changes, educators’ roles keep being redefined so that the tasks that the teachers take up could be as effective as possible in the given time and space. These modified roles of teachers are the subject of this article. In the theoretical part, the results of the analysis of the literature on foreign language teaching are presented, with the focus on teacher roles and tasks. The analysis indicates the main development tendencies in foreign language teaching after the breakthrough caused by the communicative approach. The empirical part presents the outcome of research into how contemporary middle school students identify the roles and tasks of the teacher of German. The results of the study may contribute to the scholarly reflection on the role of the teacher in the foreign language teaching process.

Opis:
One of the goals of foreign language education is to prepare learners to the role of intercultural mediators, as indicated in such documents as National Standards for Foreign Language Education or The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. Research on culture and its relation to language has a long tradition and reveals a complex and also dynamic nature of the concept. Culture has also been present, although to a different extent, in the long practice of foreign language teaching. However, our understanding of cultural competence in a multicultural and multilingual European Union, which sets goals in the area of education in its Member States, has been evolving. In the article we will discuss different concepts of culture proposed by such researchers as Hofstede (1980, 1991), Binnett (1993), Weaver (2001), and Byram (1997), as well as various concepts of approaching culture in the foreign language education context. We will also look at challenges faced by Polish learners and teachers in the foreign language classroom.

The current paper is a reflection on introducing plurilingual students of Regional Language Studies to the reading of francophone literature. The paper first discusses the didactic background for the reflection and emphasizes the plurilingualism of students. Next, the author presents how the autonomization approach to learning and teaching could be applied in an optional course of French focused on developing plurilingual learners’ reading comprehension of francophone literary texts, even before they reach the advanced proficiency level in French. The initial course concept will be illustrated with didactic analysis of the francophone novel – “L’ignorance” by Milan Kundera.

The aim of this paper is to relate the concept of ESP to the idea of Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) to work out a platform for the conceptualization of academic language as a context-reduced means of communication (Bernstein, 1971; 1999). Subsequently, the concept of talk-types (Moate, 2011) will be presented as a way of counteracting language de-contextualization and engendering restructuring of knowledge and the language itself. Theoretical considerations will be supported with the presentation of research on classroom interaction. It is aimed at highlighting how expert language is mediated in content learning with types of classroom talk and how the process of languaging (Swain, 2006a) facilitates both “taming” (Lankiewicz, 2013b) of the elaborated code and acquisition of expert knowledge.

Clarified and detailed in the CEFR – Companion volume (2020), mediation gains a new dimension. The proposed scales of mediation activities clearly focus on action-oriented, situational use of language. However, the theoretical description of these activities, and the scaling of specific skills are not enough to be able to effectively develop mediation competence in pedagogical practice. In order to understand the specifics of mediation activities, concrete guidelines are needed for the construction of mediation tasks and application in the process of language teaching and learning. The purpose of this article is to present selected issues related to the creation and implementation of mediation tasks, which give new meaning to the learning process and can be seen as a practical form of applying an action-oriented approach.

The so-called ”comprehensive approach” has been verified for compliance with the most recent achievements of modern Spanish phonetic and phonological studies.

The purpose of the following paper is to consider the development of reflection in foreign language learners. Based on the results of action research, we show to what extent the performance of group tasks affected the perception of reality and influenced changes in the communication and learning behavior of participants of an action research project. Reflection is analyzed on the basis of statements contained in student diaries and transcriptions from video recording of discussions. This means that on the one hand, we are interested in the opinions, conclusions and evaluations made by learners, but on the other hand, we attach importance to the coherence between formulated judgments and practical group action. It is not uncommon that declarations are not in accordance with the activities undertaken and that, in consequence, their value is questionable. The paper also points to difficulties associated with becoming a reflective person as well as the restrictions connected with the scientific measurements of this process.

Some of the solutions employed in the field of teaching languages for special purposes have turned out to be useful also in the field of general didactics, e.g. the task-oriented approach. What is particularly valuable in the legacy of teaching languages for special purposes is its eclectic nature, which gives one the possibility to choose and combine the best-tested methods depending on the individual characteristics of every learner. Such an undogmatic approach and search for the best possible technique, which takes into account individual characteristics of each student, appears to be a particularly valuable and enriching one in the days of certain reluctance towards an overtly rigidly defined concept of communicative approach in foreign language teaching.

The paper discusses the issues of form-focused instruction in foreign language pedagogy with the special emphasis on the task-based language teaching. There is a growing realization among the researchers and the language educators that the formal aspects of the target language need to be incorporated into the language teaching in order to facilitate the learners’ in achieving high levels of accuracy as well as communicative effectiveness. The authors point out to different techniques and procedures that are used in task-based language teaching to stimulate learners’ reflection on the formal aspects of the target language and to develop their capacity of noticing the linguistic forms as they are engaged in meaning focused activities.

In the knowledge economy, the memorization of facts and procedures is important but not sufficient. In order to responding to changes in society and the economy it becomes necessary to develop key competences. Competences-oriented education introduces innovative forms of teaching and learning based on the constructivist learning approach, such as the LbT-Method (Learning by Teaching /Lernen durch Lehren/), which gives the students the opportunity to learn by doing. The article introduces the results of a survey which was conducted during the third semester of a “Grammar in Communication” course at the faculty of Applied Linguistics at Maria Curie-Skłodowska University in Lublin. According to the students’ assessment, their participation in this course enhanced their literacy, multilingual, personal, social and learning-to-learn competences, as well as their entrepreneurial competence. The results of this survey will be used to optimize the course design in the future.

The Companion Volume to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, published in 2021, further expands the possibilities for using literary texts in foreign language teaching methodology. This paper will analyse eighteen approved French textbooks from the point of view of the literature-based exercises they contain. The aim is to determine to what extent and with what regularity literature fragments appear in these textbooks and establish the types and objectives of literature-based exercises.
