Opis:
Understanding of literary texts and cultural knowledge acquisition are not the only objectives of French or Francophone literature courses that are part of the university program for future FFL teachers. Reading excerpts of literary texts allows students to develop their key skills, especially their cultural awareness and expression, but also their ability to communicate in a foreign language which is the fundamental goal of language teaching. This study presents an example of pedagogical mediation during which various skill sets (global, professional, key, etc.) are being developed through a number of selected literary texts. Pedagogical mediation is understood as a thoughtful process during which students develop the self-awareness in the role of foreign-language and foreign-culture mediator by acquiring the skills necessary for their personal and professional growth, using the full potential of literary texts. At the same time, by deepening the receptive language skills, reading of texts develops also the productive language skills, i.e. speaking and writing, and to the awareness of students’ didactic thinking. Students’ lesson plans show the level at which they are at the moment on their professional skills development path.

Opis:
Within the field of Translation Studies, terminology plays an important role, as does the study of Terminology. This paper investigates the possibilities available within the constraints of a single course aiming to achieve multiple aims. A brief overview of how terminology is studied is followed by a presentation of the context, looking at the position of the course in relation to other courses in the same programme, and at the broader context of Translation Studies in Europe. The case study is of a Terminology course, as part of a post-graduate, two-semester, part-time programme in Translation, at Kodolányi János University of Applied Sciences in Hungary. The question of why terminology has a course to itself is likewise placed in the context of Terminology Studies and theoretical issues related to what terminology is. Finally, the course is also placed within the context of training students to become professionals in translation and related fields.

Opis:
Modern language policy in Europe has put forward the concept of multilingualism, and with this plurilingual competence. The definitions of both phenomena can be found in numerous documents of the Council of Europe, especially in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. The authors of this document describe multilingual communication in some detail, where the native speaker user is beyond the scale. A lot of attention is currently being given to issues of multilingualism in education, with numerous articles, suggestions for teaching activities and tools to develop related skills. This article raises the question of the preparation of future teachers of languages which will be taught as the second foreign language (L3) and how plurilingual competence can be developed in the classroom. The study, conducted among students of Romance languages answers the following questions. Are students, who are future L3 language teachers, adequately prepared to develop plurilingual competence in their students? Do they have the appropriate knowledge and practical skills to do this? What are their beliefs regarding the role of different languages when teaching the L3 target language?

Opis:
The article discusses a case study focusing on the students’ task of analyzing expressing opinions in Polish and English TV discussions. The written observation task is performed as a final requirement to receive credit for the course of interaction analysis, during which the second-year students of applied linguistics are introduced to the basic methods of conversation analysis. I use document analysis of students’ discourse to distinguish the main tendencies in performing the task by the students. The aim of the research presented in the paper is assessing the students’ ability to use conversation analysis in observing different ways of expressing opinion in selected Polish and American TV discussions. I especially focus on evaluating the students’ skill of unmotivated looking at the ways of expressing opinions in TV discussions. This phenomenological observation requires suspending the researcher’s personal views and assumptions concerning the meaning of actions in interaction. The main aim of conversation analysis is discovering the meaning of communicative actions from the perspective of a talk participant. If applied appropriately, this kind of observation allows student-researchers to avoid a tendency to rely on stereotypical evaluations in the analysis of interactions.

Opis:
The article presents a study conducted on 27 university students and 5 of their teachers in the Winter semester 2020/21. The study was conducted because of recommended online teaching at Polish universities and almost four decades after the first TED event, when the TED community has become worldwide and the recordings of the events can be accessed online cost-free by anybody. The popularity of TEDs and the need to teach online prompted the author to incorporate it in teaching practice and review research literature from the areas of SLA (Second Language Acquisition), EFL (English as a Foreign Language) teaching and learning, socio-constructivism and adult learning. Based on this review, a hypothesis was formulated: TED talks support the development of listening, speaking, and interaction skills when used as a supplementary resource in teaching English as a foreign language to university students. Three supplementary questions were formed to test the hypothesis. Data was obtained in an online questionnaire and analysed using the qualitative data analysis framework of Miles and Huberman (1994). The study confirmed the hypothesis. Lessons with TEDs are valued as varied, interesting, inspiring and supporting oral communication skills’ development. Results are discussed, conclusions drawn and further research explored.

Opis:
The present article is an attempt to present the situation in the area of Content and Language Integrated Learning at some technical universities in Poland. It starts with a brief outline of CLIL methodology as well as its status in the context of Polish tertiary education, and then moves on to a discussion of the results of the study conducted among Polish and international students attending English-medium courses in their specialist areas, such as, for instance, engineering. The courses involve learning of new, difficult concepts as well as specialized vocabulary. The study took place in three universities which have been offering content instruction in English for a number of years. Its aim was to investigate problems and difficulties that students come across during the course of their studies in a foreign language, as well as their expectations concerning such a mode of education.
