Opis:
While learning a foreign language, students have to practice speaking through different activities in class. Unfortunately, speaking is often a challenge for students not only due to linguistic difficulties, but most importantly because of the stress caused by talking in a foreign language in front of their classmates. This phenomenon, called language anxiety, makes it impossible for some students to participate actively and thus to develop their speaking abilities. It is therefore important to understand which types of tasks cause the highest anxiety levels, as well as to find out what can help students overcome their anxiety. To answer these questions, we led a research among Polish high school students learning French. They were asked about their attitudes towards different speaking activities in class, as well as about the atmosphere in class. The results show students are the most stressed while speaking in front of their peers and prefer interaction in small groups. Language games also appear to lower the level of anxiety during speaking. In addition, positive atmosphere and lack of judgment help students overcome their fear, but they do not eliminate it completely for every person.

Opis:
The significant role of emotions in learning was reemphasized during school and university closures caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. However, upon returning to campus, cognitive learning outcomes have reclaimed a dominating position in the university curriculum, while affective learning appears to have been disregarded. The present study contributes to the discussion on the significance of social-emotional learning in higher education. Therefore, the primary objective of this inquiry is to trace the perceived levels of foreign language enjoyment (FLE) and foreign language classroom anxiety (FLCA) in order to understand factors which contribute to their emergence. The research sample comprises 108 Polish university students majoring in English and enrolled in a bachelor’s programme. The findings demonstrate that language enjoyment is more prevalent among participants than language anxiety. The causes of language enjoyment are associated with teacher-student and peer-peer interactions as well as the classroom atmosphere, while language anxiety is reported to be linked to the fear of negative evaluation of students’ academic performance, test anxiety, and communication apprehension. These results suggest that English Department students are not exempt from experiencing language classroom anxiety, and engaging in practical English classes may be a source of a range of positive and negative emotions.

Feedback is one of the key tools used to regulate the process of learning. In order to be effective, it must provide the students with accurate information and guidelines concerning their work by not only showing them mistakes, but also pointing out what they already know and giving advice to help them improve their skills. Poorly executed feedback may damage the students’ motivation instead of reinforcing it. Thus, it is important to know how students perceive different feedback techniques and how they react to them. To answer these questions, we led a research among Polish bilingual high school students learning French. We asked them about their preferences concerning feedback and about its perceived influence on their motivation. The results show students prefer detailed comments which show them positive and negative aspects of their work, without harming their self-esteem, i.e. by giving feedback in front of their peers. Such practices, according to students, have a beneficial effect on their motivation.

Opis:
Sentence adverbials build a multidimensional constituent in many languages, i.e. they can, among others, modify the meaning of the entire sentence, emphasize a particular element in it, or build the coherence in texts. Due to the multifaced character of this linguistic phenomenon the acquisition of it in foreign language learners can be a complex process. The learner is not only faced with a variety of different words and phrases that can be used in order to deliver a complementary information in the text, but also, depending on the structural requirements of the specific language, has to learn to put this constituent in the correct place in the sentence. In present paper the use of sentence adverbials in Polish learners od Swedish will be presented. The data considered in the analysis comprises two types of texts: a summary of an expository text and a narrative. The results show that foreign language learners at the intermediate stage of the language use a broad repertoire of sentence adverbials and place them in appropriate contexts. In narratives modal expressions predominate, while in summaries connectives and intensifiers are used more often. The learners can place sentence adverbials correctly in the sentence, especially in main clauses. However, the word order in dependent clauses when other sentence adverbials occur, except for sentences with the negation inte, is still under development.

The main aim of this article is to verify the hypothesis that students haven’t yet been exposed to different techniques for effective vocabulary learning. First, I will show what the mental lexicon is and how it is organised. How mnemonists learn will also be discussed. Then I will briefly explain the terms ‘vocabulary’ and ‘lexical competence’ and show the important principles of vocabulary training. At the end, I will present the most important results of my survey (opinion poll).

The article aims at identifying the roots of the dramatic changes which took place in the philosophy, curricula and methods of pre- and in-service teacher education in the early 1990s. Integration of teacher training programmes with university education, balanced introduction of theory and field experience, skills- and competence-based professional development of language teachers based on the concept of the reflective practitioner, trainee-centred teaching methodology, i.e. innovative solutions marking the breakthrough in language teacher education of the last decade of the 20th century were the result of advancements in the educational sciences, sociology, anthropology, psychology and philosophy. The main directions of influence exerted by each of these disciplines on teacher training programmes in the United States, Great Britain and countries of Central and Eastern Europe are discussed with special emphasis on developments which shape the language policy of the main European institutions at present and which are likely to continue exerting an impact in the near future.

Capitalizing on the ecological approach to language learning (van Lier, 2004; Kramsch, 2008) and the conceptualization of language as a local practice (Pennycook, 2010) as well as languaging (Jørgensen, 2008), accounting for the continuity of linguistic phenomena rather than a discriminatory perception of linguistic properties, we intend to delve into the problem of linguistic hybridity as a sign of L2 learner identity. A direct inspiration for the study, as exemplified in the title, is the concept of metrolingualism (Otsuji, Pennycook, 2010), which offers a potential to be very informative for the study of identity issues inscribed in language. Metrolingualism connotes linguistic hybridity, which refers to something unnatural, untypical, not conforming to the norm. Positing the continuity of language use and symbolic competence (Kramsch, Whiteside, 2008), we assume after van Lier (2004) that language is not a fixed code but socially constructed entity which mingles with personal experiences shaped by social context and activates power-related issues in language use. The aim of the paper is to delve into discursive practices of students learning/using more than one L2 in the educational setting. An examination of their narratives and their languaging about language (Swain, 2006) discloses how they position themselves as L2 language users.

UNESCO (2013: 16) describes “intercultural competences” as: (1) the necessary linguistic knowledge and awareness when interacting with people from different cultures; (2) relevant knowledge about specific cultures; (3) broad comprehension about the issues that arise when members of different cultures interact; (4) adaptable attitudes that encourage creating and sustaining contact with diverse members of society. The development of intercultural competence has increasingly been recognized as a vital aim of foreign language (L2) education. The aim of the study was to investigate the relationship between courses related to the culture of English-speaking countries and the development of intercultural communicative competence of English philology students. Specifically, it explores participants’ opinions on whether the culture courses support students’ ability to acquire academic-level communicative competence, fluency in formal and informal language, and a holistic understanding of the spectrum of Anglophone communities. The participants of the study were English philology students and lecturers teaching culture courses. A mixed methodology was used with two types of research methods: a student survey and semi-structured interviews with lecturers. The results of the study allow for a formulation of didactic implications for the development of intercultural competence of English philology students.

The following paper addresses online learning in the Covid-19 pandemic and focuses on foreign language learning in the context of foreign language courses in higher education. The aim of the study is to investigate e-courses which the pandemic caused to become a substitute for face-to-face courses. Interviews were conducted with students from the University of Gdańsk and the Academy of Music in Gdańsk to find out their opinions. The research findings showed that organisation-related aspects, such as time saved, convenience or the ability to work professionally and study at the same time, were recognised as positives of online learning, while the actual educational goals, such as effectiveness, motivation and group collaboration, were seen rather as negatives of the situation. The work of teachers and their commitment were viewed positively. We did not recognise any major differences between online teaching and face-to-face interaction in this respect.

Serious games have been gaining increasing attention in the field of digital game-based language learning (DGBLL). However, to incorporate serious games into foreign/second language (L2) classrooms, teachers must be prepared with requisite knowledge and skills. To this end, following PRISMA guidelines, this study conducted a systematic review of research on serious digital language learning games with two aims. The main objective of this study was to map out the issues pertaining to serious digital language learning games that are currently being addressed in empirical studies in the DGBLL area. The secondary objective was to leverage the findings to inform the development of a research-based framework of expertise for L2 teachers intending to incorporate serious digital game-based language learning (S-DGBLL) in their classrooms. Fifty articles published until April 2023 were analysed in terms of research methodologies, pedagogical characteristics, game design, and outcomes. The findings have implications for the proposal of an S-DGBLL teacher competence framework.

Opis:
At the beginning of 2020, educational systems around the world faced one of the greatest and most important challenges of the 21st century. Due to the global pandemic and the need to introduce social distancing rules, it was decided to close schools and switch to modes of learning that do not require physical contact between learners and teachers. This decision was associated with numerous problems and difficulties in various areas of school life and the necessity to introduce new rules. More than a year after the introduction of the new learning reality, teachers and students around the world have managed to adapt. International researchers are trying to describe this new order by asking questions about what the school looks like in the time of the pandemic, how students are doing, and what strategies teachers have adopted. The article focuses on research on education and foreign language teaching conducted in 2020 in China, South Korea, Germany, and Poland. The findings to date are combined with a brief description of the educational situation in these countries. Finally, the first conclusions and recommendations are formulated that can be drawn on the basis of data collected by international researchers.
