Opis:
While there is a consensus that teaching grammar is now indispensable in most educational contexts, there still exist numerous controversies as to how this should most beneficially be done. They concern, among others, such issues as the choice of instructional options to be used in order to introduce and practice grammar structures or to provide corrective feedback on errors made in the use of such structures (cf. Loewen, 2020; Nassaji, 2017; Pawlak, 2014, 2020a). On a more general level, a question arises as to the optimal way of organizing the material to be taught, with consequences for the overall approach to grammar instruction. One influential alternative to a structural syllabus, in which case grammar structures are carefully preselected and sequenced, is task-based language teaching, which can be conceptualized and implemented in various ways (cf. Ellis, 2017, 2018). The paper discusses the role of grammar in the task-based approach, also taking into account techniques and procedures that can be employed for this purpose. An overview of existing empirical evidence will be presented and an attempt will be made to highlight the way in which communicative tasks can be used to assist grammar teaching in the Polish educational context.

Opis:
One of the goals of foreign language education is to prepare learners to the role of intercultural mediators, as indicated in such documents as National Standards for Foreign Language Education or The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. Research on culture and its relation to language has a long tradition and reveals a complex and also dynamic nature of the concept. Culture has also been present, although to a different extent, in the long practice of foreign language teaching. However, our understanding of cultural competence in a multicultural and multilingual European Union, which sets goals in the area of education in its Member States, has been evolving. In the article we will discuss different concepts of culture proposed by such researchers as Hofstede (1980, 1991), Binnett (1993), Weaver (2001), and Byram (1997), as well as various concepts of approaching culture in the foreign language education context. We will also look at challenges faced by Polish learners and teachers in the foreign language classroom.

Opis:
This paper aims to report attitudes of extramural students of the Department of English Studies, University of Wrocław, towards reflection which was introduced into a course of phonetics and into individual practice of pronunciation at home. The article opens with a brief presentation of the concept of reflection, a discussion of its importance in teaching foreign languages (FLs) and an overview of studies on the use of reflection in FL pronunciation teaching. The research design and the techniques used to develop reflection in the students in this study are then described. From the perspective of many learners involved in this research introducing reflection into pronunciation learning had several positive effects: it helped learners set goals and made them aware of effective learning strategies. It also aided them in self-evaluation, in understanding the emotions accompanying the learning of FL pronunciation, and in finding ways of dealing with these. However, it was found that many students were reluctant to have reflection introduced into the learning process. This was mainly due to lack of time and to students’ belief that reflection does not bring any positive results. Finally, the author suggests that the ability to reflect on one’s learning is difficult and dependent on individual predisposition, and that it requires special training.

Opis:
The presented article reviews changes in the Polish system of foreign language teaching that have or should have occurred in the last half a century. The suggested time span encompasses the utilization of two major didactic methods which have been in use since the 1970s, i.e. the Communicative Method and the Task-Based Approach. The article consists of two major parts. The first one outlines the history and main methodological facets of the Communicative and Task-Based Approaches. The second part provides an analysis of the current state of affairs in Polish schools, based on surveys carried out among Polish teachers and students of foreign languages.

Opis:
Despite its growing popularity within the humanities and social sciences, the concept of discourse (and also discourse analysis) continues to be perceived as rather vague by those who are not experts in the domain of discourse analysis. The aim of the present paper is to acquaint non-specialist readers with the multifold, interdisciplinary nature of discourse in order to further consider its usefulness with reference to foreign language pedagogy. It is argued that a wider use of this concept may lead us to a more coherent view of the main issues underlying our field, namely by integrating into our thinking both social and individual communicative practices. This idea is illustrated with selected conceptual tools and the views advanced by leading French discourse analysts (e.g. Charaudeau, 1993, 2010; Maingueneau, 1996, 2005) and, up to this point, mainly exploited in studying the media and public communication. Moreover, the importance of typological distinctions in foreign language pedagogy is stressed and an example of a discursive approach to foreign language instruction is provided. At the same time, attention is drawn to inherent and/or objective limitations on and difficulties in a wider use of the concept of discourse. These problems notwithstanding, the conclusion points to the fact that, given the complexity of our domain, it is hardly conceivable nowadays that we can be content with oversimplified formulae and limited, one-sided theories.

The aim of this paper is to relate the concept of ESP to the idea of Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) to work out a platform for the conceptualization of academic language as a context-reduced means of communication (Bernstein, 1971; 1999). Subsequently, the concept of talk-types (Moate, 2011) will be presented as a way of counteracting language de-contextualization and engendering restructuring of knowledge and the language itself. Theoretical considerations will be supported with the presentation of research on classroom interaction. It is aimed at highlighting how expert language is mediated in content learning with types of classroom talk and how the process of languaging (Swain, 2006a) facilitates both “taming” (Lankiewicz, 2013b) of the elaborated code and acquisition of expert knowledge.

The present paper focuses on classroom discourse from the perspective of Sociocultural Theory. This theory, represented mainly by Vygotsky (1978), Leont'ev (1978) and Wertsch (1985), has been applied to second language acquisition by researchers such as Lantolf (1994). Firstly, the paper presents the view of language and language learning and the main constructs in sociocultural SLA, such as mediation through social interaction, mediation by means of private speech, internalization, the zone of proximal development, and Activity Theory. The methodology of sociocultural research is also taken into consideration. Secondly, the paper describes a number of studies into classroom discourse which are discussed in reference to the constructs mentioned above. Thirdly and finally, the paper provides some evaluation of the theory in question.

The paper discusses the issues of form-focused instruction in foreign language pedagogy with the special emphasis on the task-based language teaching. There is a growing realization among the researchers and the language educators that the formal aspects of the target language need to be incorporated into the language teaching in order to facilitate the learners’ in achieving high levels of accuracy as well as communicative effectiveness. The authors point out to different techniques and procedures that are used in task-based language teaching to stimulate learners’ reflection on the formal aspects of the target language and to develop their capacity of noticing the linguistic forms as they are engaged in meaning focused activities.

Opis:
Language learning in cooperation is a social and sociocultural dimension of action-based approach. By means of language education the school prepares students to undertake social activities and to cooperate with native language speakers. Therefore, teamwork teaching and learning, team pursuance of mutual goals with the use of foreign language has become one of the priorities of action-based didactics. We usually talk about positive aspects of teamwork in the context of communication teaching. Team cooperation is less frequently perceived as a form of pursuing another goal of language education, i.e. linguistic competence development. Apart from pursuing communicative goals work in small groups lets the learners get involved in explicit work with language structures, observe and discover language rules, test formed hypotheses in texts they create and master their competencies by reflecting on the language. The purpose of the paper is to present organisational forms of classes applied most frequently in foreign language teaching and learning actionbased process.

Opis:
Task-based language teaching has recently become a mainstream research area in second language acquisition studies. One of the underexplored areas is task design and its influence on the measures of complexity, accuracy, and fluency. While most previous research into task design focused on manipulating planning time, note-taking, or task familiarity, one of the promising lines of investigation is how task difficulty may also be conducive to L2 acquisition. Task difficulty is understood as the cognitive burden placed on a learner performing a task. In the current study learners of English as a foreign language (n=28) performed three differently designed oral communicative tasks of increasing difficulty: (1) a brainstorming task, (2) a sorting and ordering task, and (3) a problem-solving argumentative task. Task difficulty, i.e. having to employ higher-order thinking skills improved learners’ L2 lexical complexity as measured by lexical diversity, lexical density, and word-frequency counts.

The tasks that the contemporary teachers of foreign languages face as well as the roles that they should assume as leaders of the educational process are of complex nature. This complexity is a result of numerous social changes and transformational processes. In response to these changes, educators’ roles keep being redefined so that the tasks that the teachers take up could be as effective as possible in the given time and space. These modified roles of teachers are the subject of this article. In the theoretical part, the results of the analysis of the literature on foreign language teaching are presented, with the focus on teacher roles and tasks. The analysis indicates the main development tendencies in foreign language teaching after the breakthrough caused by the communicative approach. The empirical part presents the outcome of research into how contemporary middle school students identify the roles and tasks of the teacher of German. The results of the study may contribute to the scholarly reflection on the role of the teacher in the foreign language teaching process.

Some of the solutions employed in the field of teaching languages for special purposes have turned out to be useful also in the field of general didactics, e.g. the task-oriented approach. What is particularly valuable in the legacy of teaching languages for special purposes is its eclectic nature, which gives one the possibility to choose and combine the best-tested methods depending on the individual characteristics of every learner. Such an undogmatic approach and search for the best possible technique, which takes into account individual characteristics of each student, appears to be a particularly valuable and enriching one in the days of certain reluctance towards an overtly rigidly defined concept of communicative approach in foreign language teaching.

The purpose of the following paper is to consider the development of reflection in foreign language learners. Based on the results of action research, we show to what extent the performance of group tasks affected the perception of reality and influenced changes in the communication and learning behavior of participants of an action research project. Reflection is analyzed on the basis of statements contained in student diaries and transcriptions from video recording of discussions. This means that on the one hand, we are interested in the opinions, conclusions and evaluations made by learners, but on the other hand, we attach importance to the coherence between formulated judgments and practical group action. It is not uncommon that declarations are not in accordance with the activities undertaken and that, in consequence, their value is questionable. The paper also points to difficulties associated with becoming a reflective person as well as the restrictions connected with the scientific measurements of this process.

The Companion Volume to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, published in 2021, further expands the possibilities for using literary texts in foreign language teaching methodology. This paper will analyse eighteen approved French textbooks from the point of view of the literature-based exercises they contain.
