Opis:
Although there is an increasing body of research on diverse aspects of language teachers’ professional practice there are still contexts that remain hardly explored. One such context is the oral examination situation encountered by experienced language teachers in Poland who aspire to be promoted in the ranks of the teaching profession. Drawing on positioning theory as a methodological tool to analyse the experience of one English teacher’s promotion examination situation, I will attempt to find out what aspects of teacher identity emerge from the small stories employed in the examination situation, as well as what lessons can be learnt from a study about teacher positioning (both selfpositioning and being positioned) in the professional assessment context. Although the study is set in the Polish context, it may contribute to the knowledge on language teacher identity (re)construction in general through its focus on one area of language teacher professional practice – taking a teacher promotion examination.

The professionalism of a teacher is their competence, expertise, “knowledge of the craft”, but also the ability to meet high cognitive, operational and ethical standards. On the one hand, this is rooted in social and cultural expectations, related to the educational needs of society, but on the other it has a personality dimension, connected with the teacher’s individuality, which is evidenced in the specific relations they have with students. This article aims to analyse the determinants of the professionalism of the contemporary foreign language teacher found in recent glottodidactic discussion and compare these to the current educational policy and practice. It will present both theoretical approaches and the selected results of studies and reports on this topic.

Opis:
In an era of dynamically changing socio-economics and technological progress, many aspects of school education are being transformed. Teachers are required to be professional in the form of a demand for increasingly higher professional qualifications and competences, but are also required to fulfil specific social roles. These new determinants of the functioning of education create difficulties in the construction of the teacher's identity because the changes which are being introduced disturb professional stability and cause fears about the future. The challenge is to try to answer universal questions about the professional identity of the teacher, the ability to combine an exceptional sense of service, vocation and mission. This situation affects teachers of German and other foreign languages (FL). The aim of this paper is to show how teachers of German as a FL perceive the changing school and how they assess the educational process that they co-create. Through biographical interviews, analyzed within the framework of Rubacha’s social role model (2000), an attempt is made to answer the question of how the social role of German teachers is changing as a result of the educational reform initiated in 2017 and what dilemmas are being caused by the changing role of the teacher. Statements from participants of the study will be presented that illustrate the disorder of stabilization of the profession, which results in a critical attitude to the changing situation in school, a disturbed attitude to the world, culture and other people. Impairment of the professional stabilization of German teachers is viewed in the context of the concept of their social role.

The aim of this paper is to relate the concept of ESP to the idea of Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) to work out a platform for the conceptualization of academic language as a context-reduced means of communication (Bernstein, 1971; 1999). Subsequently, the concept of talk-types (Moate, 2011) will be presented as a way of counteracting language de-contextualization and engendering restructuring of knowledge and the language itself. Theoretical considerations will be supported with the presentation of research on classroom interaction. It is aimed at highlighting how expert language is mediated in content learning with types of classroom talk and how the process of languaging (Swain, 2006a) facilitates both “taming” (Lankiewicz, 2013b) of the elaborated code and acquisition of expert knowledge.

Being a reflective teacher is a highly appreciated quality of a good teacher. Reflection is considered to be essential in the job of teaching since it prompts to modify and improve the process of teaching and learning. As experts suggest reflective skills can be practiced and developed due to various teacher education models, programs and techniques. One of the techniques is a teacher portfolio that can consist of many tasks provoking teachers and teacher-trainees to reflect on their teaching. This article presents some research on the content of English teacher-trainees’ reflection and their metareflection. The research outcome provides some knowledge of what they reflect upon, if they do at all, and whether they perceive reflection as valuable in the process of learning teaching.

Opis:
The following article concerns the issue of educating foreign language teachers to be reflective practitioners in the Polish academic context. A starting point for our discussion is the assumption that the process of academic FL teacher education should be directed at developing the student teacher’s disciplinary and epistemological awareness. The first part of the article is devoted to the concept of glottodidactics as a research area in Poland and to the evaluation of the usefulness of theories from the field of pedeutology for the formulation of a progressive model of teacher education. Next, we define the concepts of disciplinary and epistemological awareness of FL teachers, and confront them with the notion of reflective practice (Schön, 1983) and the paradigm of reflexive modernity (Beck, Giddens and Lash, 2009). Finally, we propose a preliminary model for developing both types of awareness in tertiary education, based on specific transpositions of glottodidactic knowledge into the skills needed in the field.

The aim of this article is to present and discuss the results of a questionnaire carried out among secondary school students of German with a view to examining the students’ perception and assessment of the Germans. Analysis of the data provides an answer to the question whether secondary school students of German are able to think critically while assessing others or maybe, on the contrary, are only able to repeat others’ judgements without reflection. The discussion of the results of the questionnaire seems to indicate that, unfortunately, the majority of the secondary school students of German can hardly be regarded as reflective. In the second part of the article, the author puts forward some proposals which may prove important in the process of educating reflective foreign language teachers, and consequently, reflective students.

The following article aims to explain the concept of textbook awareness that in foreign language teaching literature is used to denote an element of teacher’s professional competence. The underpinnings of this concept are based on an analysis of its definition as postulated by Koenig (2010) and a critical survey of subject literature on the teacher-textbook relationship. This article shows how the concept of text-book awareness is justified and can be implemented. The significance of the role of textbook awareness in teacher’s didactic practice and professional development is highlighted.

This article focuses on the use of teacher journals as an empirical tool. Journals are often perceived as subjective and self-indulgent, resulting from lack of criticism or lack of experience in journal writing. On the other hand, journals can help in investigating such aspects as learner behavior, classroom dynamics or teacher behaviors. Undoubtedly journals help teachers to become more reflective. However, the obvious advantages, the journals are not the most favored empirical research tool.

A teacher of a foreign language (FL) acquires his/her professional training in the course of higher education in the field of philology, where he/she follows a training program focused on "learning outcomes that include knowledge and skills corresponding to all the requirements of the core curriculum of the teaching subject or the core curriculum of education in the profession, respectively, or the content of the classes taught" (Journal of Laws 2019, item 1450). From the aforementioned provision it should be concluded that FL teachers work in various educational institutions and with audiences with different profiles and needs, including professional ones. The article describes the scope and forms of FL/LSP teacher education in Poland, based on the results of a qualitative analysis of teacher education programs implemented in 2017-2020 at 22 Polish universities. The text presents elements of teacher specialization programs including content specific to specialized glottodidactics at different universities/degrees. They illustrate the diversity of applied educational practices and inspire to implement didactic solutions on a wider scale.

This article is an attempt to determine the reasons for difficulties encountered in the interpretation of data collected in the process of conducting action research on developing a reflective attitude in TTC students. The starting point for investigating the above issue is a short presentation of the action research study: the subjects’ aim, and tools employed in the process. The difficulties with interpreting the collected data will be examined mainly from the cognitive perspective, as the description and interpretation relate to internal cognitive processes, observable only in potential change of behaviour. It is significant, therefore, to work out, among the research participants, a coherent conceptual area referring to the changes under investigation. Interpretation of data is also the result of the quality of interactions among the research participants, which will be presented using the example of relations between the teacher researcher and participant-students and their possible influence on the students’ opinions. The article closes with suggestions for selecting criteria for the interpretation of data being collected.

The aim of the article is to present the main directions of research in the field of constructivism and how we can use this educational model in remote language teaching. It should be noted that although constructivism is not a new approach in the theory of psychology and didactics, it turns out that it is not yet sufficiently present in educational practice, as we could see during the pandemic crisis. We pay special attention to the foreign language teacher who acts as a linguistic and cultural mediator. We assume, among other things, that a teacher, using constructivist ideas, can help heir students develop communication skills even more actively during remote classes. We will analyze the skills and characteristics of teachers who, above all, encourage and motivate their students to independently construct linguistic and cultural knowledge. Finally, we present the results of a pilot study conducted among first-year students of various philologies who have experienced remote language learning.
