    The Museum of Krakow, until recently the Historical Museum of the City of Krakow, ranks among the largest Polish museums, not only within the group of municipal museums. It boasts an exceptionally developed infrastructure and a high number of thematic branches, as well as multifaceted operations. The analysed monograph, authored by the Museum’s current Director, presents a long and tedious, albeit systematic process of the Museum’s development over the period of more than a hundred years within the context of numerous external conditionings, with the emphasis on the Museum’s role and importance for the city community and for its culture. Underlining the obvious advantages of the book and its sizeable factual value, as well as balanced opinions, the reviewer, however, observes its certain defaults and deficiencies, while also formulating a number of more general views going beyond the very matter of the book-related review. The extensive publication in question certainly encourages such an approach, this unquestionably adding another to its merits.

    Opis:
    On the 8th of July 2018 died Janusz Wałek, art historian, museologist, pedagogue, born in 1941 in Bobowa. He graduated from the Jagiellonian University, the history of art faculty. In 1968, he started working in the Czartoryskis’ Museum – Branch of the National Museum in Krakow, where some time after he became a head of the European Painting Department for many years. He was a lecturer at the Fine Arts Academy, the National Academy of Theatre Arts and the Jagiellonian University in Krakow. He wrote two books and numerous articles about art. He was also a poet, the winner of the Main Prize in the 1997 edition of the General Polish Poetry Competition. He was a student of Marek Rostworowski, they worked together on a number of publicly acclaimed exhibitions: “Romanticism and Romanticity in Polish Art of the 19th and 20th centuries”, “The Poles’ Own Portrait”, “Jews – Polish”. Many exhibitions and artistic shows were prepared by him alone, inter alia “The Vast Theatre of Stanisław Wyspiański”, presentations of artworks by great artists: Goya, Rafael, Titian, El Greco. He also created a few scenarios of permanent exhibitions from the Czartoryskis’ Collection – in Krakow and in Niepołomice – being a great expert on this collection. “Europeum” – European Culture Centre was organised according to the programme written by him. He specialised mostly, although not exclusively, in art and culture of the Renaissance. Janusz Wałek is presented herein as a museologist who was fully devoted to art, characterised by: creativity, broad perception of art and culture, unconventional approach to museum undertakings, unusual sensitivity and imagination. What the author of the article found worth emphasising is that J. Wałek talked and wrote about art not only as a scholar, but first of all as a poet, with beauty and zest of the language he used.
    8 lipca 2018 r. zmarł Janusz Wałek, historyk sztuki, muzealnik, pedagog, urodzony w 1941 r.w Bobowej. Ukończył historię sztuki na Uniwersytecie Jagiellońskim. Od 1968 r. pracował w Muzeum Czartoryskich – Oddziale Muzeum Narodowego w Krakowie, gdzie z czasem został wieloletnim kierownikiem Działu Malarstwa Europejskiego. Był wykładowcą w ASP, w PWST i na UJ w Krakowie. Jest autorem licznych tekstów o sztuce oraz dwóch książek. Był też poetą, zdobywcą w 1997 r. Głównej Nagrody w Ogólnopolskim Konkursie Poetyckim. Był uczniem Marka Rostworowskiego, współpracował z nim przy słynnych wystawach: „Romantyzm i Romantyczność w sztuce polskiej XIX i XX wieku”, „Polaków portret własny”, „Żydzi – Polscy”. Sam był autorem wielu ekspozycji i pokazów artystycznych, m.in. „Stanisława Wyspiańskiego teatr ogromny”, pokazów dzieł wielkich artystów: Goi, Rafaela i Tycjana oraz El Greca. Był też twórcą kilku scenariuszy wystaw stałych ze zbiorów Czartoryskich – w Krakowie i w Niepołomicach – jako wielki znawca tej kolekcji. Opracował scenariusz i program „Ośrodka kultury europejskiej. Europeum”. Był znawcą przede wszystkim, choć nie tylko, sztuki i kultury renesansu. Autorka przedstawia Janusza Wałka jako muzealnika bez reszty oddanego sztuce, uwypuklając cechy go charakteryzujące: kreatywność, szerokość postrzegania spraw sztuki i kultury, nietypowe i niekonwencjonalne podchodzenie do muzealnych zadań, wielką wrażliwość i wyobraźnię. Podkreśla też, że J. Wałek mówił i pisał o sztuce nie tylko ze znawstwem ale i ze swadą, a przede wszystkim pięknie, jak poeta.
