Opis:
Polish religious Marian and at the same time patriotic songs, included in the sources of the twentieth century, are mainly focused on Mary Queen of Poland, whose sanctuary is located at Jasna Gora. Many of them were formed due to the establishment of the feast of Blessed Virgin Mary, Queen of Poland and Jasnogórskimi Vows of Nation. Among them are songs devoted entirely to patriotic thread (8) and those in which this thread appears only by chance, in some verses (50). The nature of the studied works for the most part is pleading, begging, and only in the few cases is praising. The titles addressed to Mary are mainly: Queen, Hetman, Lady or even in one case, Mary was described as the Chief. The requests are directed for the freedom of the homeland, peace, faith, health, happiness and prosperity. All these compositions in a more or less sophisticated form of art are a faith testament of their creators, and evidence of worship for Our Lady Guardian of Poland.

Opis:
Ancient collections of religious songs constitute a valuable source in research on church song, its genesis and vitality. These valuable resources are now complemented with an unknown earlier, handwritten cantional from the collection of Silesian Library in Katowice entitled Zbiór pieśni całorocznych [Collection of Church Songs for All the Year]. According to the title page, this collection was completed by two organists from Upper Silesia, Jakub Mordan from Tworóg and Jan Damroth from Warszowice in the years 1811–1821. It contains 342 songs, mainly lyrics, all in Polish. Over 50 works are accompanied by music notation, with harmonization in the style of organ accompaniment Many songs are accompanied by references to melodies of other church chants, in the form of contrafactum. The collection contains church chants of various themes grouped in 17 sections arranged according to the structure of the church year. Its outstanding feature is an unusually great number of Christmas carols, Passion songs and songs connected with the cult of saints. The cantional contains also over 50 psalm songs, mainly translated by Jan Kochanowski. A comparative analysis indicates certain connections in the repertoire with the printed Wroclaw cantional from 1734 but at the same time confirms differences and original creativity.

Opis:
Since the inception of the Congregation of the Sisters Servants of Mary Immaculate, music, especially liturgical music, has played a vital role. In religious formation and with the recommended thoughts of their Founder, the Sisters have learned religious songs which later proved to be useful in liturgies and in their work with children in the day cares. Blessed Edmund Bojanowski was meticulous in choosing a fitting repertoire, appropriate music and musically trained and talented Sisters. For 150 years, the Silesian Sisters have cultivated musical traditions. Organists, choir directors, pedagogues in church institutions, cantors, music teachers in schools and day cares, these Sisters have striven to spread the Faith precisely through beautiful music and songs for the glory of God. They have undertaken various musical and liturgical initiatives in their convents, in their dioceses and throughout the whole country during celebrations. They have concerned themselves immensely about music and have even published their own liturgical song books. They have also undertaken different initiatives which emphasize the requirements of their Founder as specifically concerns the care of preschool and day care children and church hymns throughout all the Congregations of the Sisters Servants of Mary Immaculate.

Church Songbook
Fr. Rev. Jan Siedlecki
Opis:
The Church Songbook by Rev. Fr. Jan Siedlecki is not a homogenous publication in terms of its 41 editions over 140 years. From the beginning, it contained both the old and the new songs. The author did not pay too much attention to the documentation of their origins and neither did Rev. Fr. Michał Marcin Mioduszewski CM from whose collection Rev. Fr. Siedlecki borrowed the old songs. The situation changed along with the new editor-in-chief, Rev. Fr. Wendelin Świerczek CM. It was him who raised the bar to a new high in the 1928 anniversary edition of the critical edition of the songbook, which he oversaw until the end of his life (he passed away in 1974). The shape of various editions was influenced by changing editors. In the 41st edition of Rev. Fr. Siedlecki’s songbook from 2015, there are 243 songs for which the source are the previous editions. In addition, for 170 songs, the source are Fr. Rev. Mioduszewski’s songbooks. 102 songs in this edition of the songbook have been printed for the first time. The other ones originate from other sources. From this simple analysis, it follows that for 515 songs out of 840 in the 41st edition, the source is the songbook of Fr. Rev. Siedlecki or the songbook of his predecessor, Fr. Rev. Mioduszewski. Many church songs sung in Poland owe their functioning to the songbook of Fr. Rev. Jan Siedlecki (his individual editions). Thus, the decision of the Conference of the Polish Episcopate, by which the 41st edition was approved as the Polish national liturgical songbook, has to be recognised as historical justice or, if you will, a natural consequence.

Opis:
I w codziennej, żmudnej pracy czynili wszystko, aby tę piękną maksymę wcielać w życie.
Cultivating the memory of traditional Polish folk, patriotic and religious songs in Upper Silesia (which belonged to the German state in 1930s) was the primary reason for the formation of the monthly magazine “Przyjaciel Pieśni” (The Song’s Friend) by members of The Association of Polish Singing groups in Opole – Silesia. The two main purposes of the magazine (which was created by singers, musicians and journalists) for four years of its running (between 1936–1939) were to inform and educate its readers. The publication became a place where the value of singing was highly appreciated, which was something that did not exist anywhere else at the time. They emphasized the healing effect of singing not only for those listening, but the singers as well, especially in a difficult pre-war period. God, Honour and Homeland – praised in songs – were the values of the editors, creators and journalists working in “Przyjaciel Pieśni” and every day with hard work they embodied those values.

Opis:
The cult of saints has been developing very vividly since the beginning of Christianity. It is expressed in three forms: veneratio – worship of the saints; imitatio – imitation of the example of their lives; invocatio – invocation of their intercession, which always leads to the Father glorified in his saints. This is most fully done in the liturgy, and thus also in the Liturgy of the Hours. Therefore, it was important to prepare the texts and melodies for the Liturgy of the Hours, renewed after the Second Vatican Council, which included liturgical memories, feasts and feasts of the Lord’s saints and common texts on saints. The constitutive element of the two basic canonical hours, Matins and Vespers, apart from reading, psalmody and prayer, are the hymns, the texts of which had to be reviewed and prepared according to the rules developed by the specially created Cœtus VII Study Group. The full set of hymns in the post-conciliar Liturgy of the Hours reached an unprecedented number of 291 songs. Most of the hymns of the Liturgy of the Hours were translated into Polish by P. Galiński. Of course, according to the recommendations of the Congregation of Rites, after the publication of the Liturgy of the Hours in the Polish language, it was necessary to make every effort to arrange appropriate melodies for it, especially for the parts intended by nature for singing, such as hymns. This article analyses the texts and melodies of the hymns about saints for the two most important canonical hours: Matins and Vespers, published in Selected hymns for Matins and Vespers, edited by s. J. M. Bujalska PDDM and s. M. D. Nowak PDDM. It was published in 2012 on the initiative of the Disciples of the Divine Master. In addition to the liturgical hymns, the collection discussed here also includes church songs about saints, which can be performed in place of the hymn. The review and analysis of the hymns on saints led to the conclusion that not all the rules of a well composed hymn, developed by Cœtus VII, were applied in the hymn texts on saits, published in the Polish edition of the Book Liturgy of the Hours. In turn, the presentation of compositions about saints included in the collection Selected hymns for Matins and Vespers, showed a huge richness of forms and musical styles that they represent. On the one hand, it revealed strong references to romantic folk songs and a strong attachment to diatonic scales, which are characteristic of Polish liturgical work. On the other hand, it revealed the attempts of composers to refer to contemporary music stylistics. All this gives a wide spectrum of views on contemporary liturgical work and allows us to set new paths for its development.

Opis:
Many songs used in Polish churches were created in monastic environments. Unfortunately, over the years, the identity of their creators has been unknown. When entering an order, a monk or a nun took a new name and stopped using their surname, the products of their activities having been dedicated to God and thus were anonymous. Today, we are unable to determine with absolute certainty the authorship of lyrics and melodies of songs. Not infrequently, high probability, at which we arrive in the course of examining archives and through deduction, has to be sufficient for us. One of the environments in which church songs still used today were created was the order of the Poor Clares of Perpetual Adoration, previously functioning under the name of Franciscan Sisters of the Eucharist. Amongst them, a special place is reserved for Sister Anuncjata Natalia Łada to whom we owe the creation of lyrics of such songs as, inter alia, Let’s Love the Lord, because His Heart… (Kochajmy Pana, bo Serce Jego), The Beautiful Flower of Nazareth (Nazareński śliczny kwiecie), The Hidden Jesus (Jezusa ukrytego), In Your Wonderful Temples (O jak są miłe Twe Przybytki), Have Mercy, my Jesus (Miłosierdzia, Jezu mój), O Have Mercy, Mercy our Lord! (O miłosierdzia, miłosierdzia, Panie!), O Come All Ye Faithful (Przyjdźcie do mnie wszyscy), O the Holy Feast, Jesus! (O święta Uczto, Jezu!), You Make us Rejoice (Ty każesz weselić się), O the Holy Blood! (O Krwi najdroższa!), The Welcoming Song of Joy (Pieśnią wesela witamy), O my Soul (Duszo moja), O the Beloved Joseph! (O Józefie ukochany!). The talented composer of melodies was Sister Gabriela Olga Kołaczkowska. Also, the founder of the Polish branch of the order, Sister Maria Ludwika Nałęcz-Morawska, is the author of one song O the Silent White Host (O milcząca Hostio biała), or, as others want it, two songs.
