Opis:
An integral part of historical research is to analyze the cartographic documentation for a given subject. In many cases, both the historians as well as cartographers use the same type of source but they do it in a different way. The aim of the article is to present the archival sources, mainly from the Polish and Ukrainian archives, serving both types of researchers who are dealing with administrative and political history of Galicia. The article focuses on the analysis of archival materials illustrating the administrative division of the state carried out by the Austri-an authorities after 1772, as well as, territorial structures of various religious groups present in Galicia at that time. The structures of state and church were not the same, in addition, each of the denominations existing in Galicia had its own territorial organization, which was also developing. These issues should be investigated through the use of cartographic collections confronted with a typical historical sources. Cartographic documentation to those problems consists mainly of maps and atlases developed in the late 18th and early 19th c. (by Frederic von Miege, Joseph Liesganig, Anton Mayer von Heldensfeld, Hieronymus Benedicti) and created in the mid-19th c. collections of so-called Galician Cadastre, numbering more than 40 000 maps and archival aids. They are now scattered in the Polish and Ukrainian archives. Additionally, the Austrian military maps from the late 19th and early 20th century are the other source. Basic sources to the territorial and administrative division of Galicia in the era of post-partition are preserved at the holdings of the Central State Historical Archive of Ukraine in Lviv, mainly in the fond: Galician Gover-norship. The statistical and demographic sources are also rich in information (eg. the Austrian population cen-suses). The less common types of archival records such as vital records, or public notary files and exceptionally well-preserved files of the ecclesiastical institutions of different denominations are rarely used by historians. Supplementary records for the subject are stored in other institutions in Poland (the State Archives in Kato-wice, Kraków, Przemyśl, Rzeszów and other archives and libraries in Warsaw, including the National Library, Archives of the Central Statistical Office of Poland, the Library of the Military Office for Historical Studies, The Central Military Archives, university libraries) and in the Ukraine (archives and libraries in Lviv, Ivano-Frankivsk and Ternopil) and in Austria (archives and libraries in Vienna).

Opis:
More than half of historians who used the holdings of the Central Archives of Historical Records, headed in the years 1897–1919 by Professor Teodor Wierzbowski, came from Galicia. Among them archivists constituted not a small group, only to mention Oswald Balzer, Eugeniusz Barwiński, Adam Chmiel, Przemysław Dąbkowski, Stanisław Krzyżanowski, Stanisław Kutrzeba. Their correspondence, which is stored in the manuscript collections of the Scientific Library of the Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences and of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Cracow city, shows how much they valued the relations with the Central Archives and its director. Books on history and the fundamental source editions, as well as historical and legal arguments in the Polish–Hungarian border dispute about the region of Morskie Oko in the Tatra Mountains were the results of research conducted in Warsaw. Wierzbowski asked scholars, who used the holdings of The Central Archives of Historical Records, not to disclose the origin of quoted records, in order not to attract attention of Russian authorities to the fact how important and valuable to the Polish historical science was holdings of that archive. Contacts of Galician scholars, including archivists from the cities of Cracow and Lvov, maintained with the Central Archives show a sense of unity of the Polish science across the borders, in spite of partitions. These contacts contributed to the integration of Polish historians, and in independent Poland were basis for creation one common archival service.

Opis:
Galicia – peripheral part of the Habsburg monarchy – played a key role in the First World War. Its strategic location between Austro-Hungarian Empire and Russia resulted in the direct inclusion of multi-ethnic and multi-faith community of Galicia in global armed conflict. The Russian invasion of Galicia and double siege of the fortress of Przemyśl by the Russians had long-term political, material and spiritual effects for the local community. The article focuses on the situation of the Ukrainian population in Galicia in the first two years of the war. Particular attention was paid to the attitude of the Greek Catholic Church, its bishops, clergy and followers to the events of 1914–1915. The Greek Catholic community, mostly loyal to the Habsburg monarchy, was affected by the repressions of the authorities and Austro-Hungarian troops in the first weeks of the war. The reason for this was pro-Russian movement growing in many regions of Galicia before 1914 and promotion of the Orthodox denomination. After the outbreak of the war, many lay people and priests of the Greek-Catholic denomination were accused of supporting Russia and placed in internment camps in the interior of the monarchy. The loss of the parish clergy periodically reached 50% of the pre-First World War state. The Russian forces invading Galicia fought with the Ukrainian national movement and its activists. The aim of the Russian authorities was russification of the community of Galicia and conversion of the Greek Catholics to Greek Orthodox. This was to ensure integration of the territory of the tsarist empire. Drastic methods that were introduced to implement these plans, including the arrest and detention in the depths of Russia of the head of the Greek Catholic Church, Metropolitan Andrzej Szeptycki did not bring the expected results. Interesting results gave a study based on previously unknown sources of the Church from the State Archives in Przemyśl holdings. Records showed that the percentage of people – staunch supporters of Russia, who decided to leave voluntarily Galicia, together with the Russian army did not exceed 1% of the total population in the Uniate Diocese of Przemyśl. Months of fighting in Galicia resulted in material losses, including burning of dozens of villages and towns, destruction of the sacred objects (including historic churches and their equipment), looting of cultural property by the Russians. The dramatic events of the war eventually led to the weakening of the pro-Russian movement in Galicia and achievement of decisive advantage in the society by the Ukrainian National party, strongly supported by the Greek Orthodox Church.

Opis:
This article is an attempt to show the attitude of the Greek-Catholic hierarchy in the Polish lands to the events of the Napoleonic era. The subject is discussed on the basis of the behavior of two Uniate bishops, presenting contradictory views and political affiliation. The Greek-Catholic bishop of Przemysl, Antoni Angełłowicz, since 1808 the Greek-Catholic Archbishop of Galicia, was a strong advocate of the alliance with the Habsburg monarchy, moreover, he was loyal to the Austrian emperor and supported his policy. The bishop of the neighboring with Galicia Greek-Catholic diocese of Chelm, Ferdinand Ciechanowski, agreed with the attitudes of Polish society, and clearly supported the policy of the French emperor Napoleon Bonaparte. The pastoral letters of metropolitan Angełłowicz (1805), and bishop Ciechanowski (1812) together with other sources to this period became the basis for the analysis and comparison of different attitudes and political views of both representatives of the hierarchy. The pastoral letter of 1805 was released at a critical moment of the history of Austria, after Austrian defeat in the Battle of Ulm with the forces of Napoleon and Vienna and the Czech lands occupied by the French . The letter contained a declaration of the bishop’s and the Galician Ruthenians’ loyalty to the Austrian monarchy and the Emperor of Austria. Anti-French attitudes of Angełłowicz was confirmed in two political pamphlets that were written by him and published under the title Who is the party provoking: Austria or France? (1805) and Austrian Patriot Comments on Certain Articles from Foreign Newspapers (1809). Disclosure of political sympathies forced the Metropolitam to temporarily leave Lviv after the Galicia went under occupation by the Polish army in 1809 A completely different personality was Uniate bishop of Chelm, Ferdynand Dąbrowa Ciechanowski. The cardinal was involved in the political life of the Duchy of Warsaw (as a senator), especially in the events of 1812 and preparations for the "Polish War", led by Emperor Napoleon. Ciechanowski took part in the Parliament of 1812 and the establishment of the General Confederation of the Polish Kingdom, which proclaimed the rebirth of an independent state. Under the influence of the patriotic atmosphere he announced the pastoral letter to priests and faithful of his diocese on June 28th, 1812. He expressed universal joy from the rebirth of an independent Poland and solidarity with the Polish society. The consequences of his pro-Polish speaking incurred after Napoleon’s defeat in Russia and Russian invasion of the Duchy of Warsaw in 1813, then he was forced to temporarily leave his diocese to avoid imprisonment. In the years of his reign (died in 1828) Ciechanowski carried out a number of important reforms for the Greek-Catholic dioceses, patterning the organization and functioning on the Latin Church.

Opis:
W ciągu niespełna rocznej działalności (od 16 stycznia do 9 grudnia 1919 r.) odegrał kluczową rolę w walce o polskie granice i w budowie podstaw organizacyjnych niepodległego państwa polskiego.
Ignacy Jan Paderewski (1860–1941), one of the architects of Polish independence and a world-renowned pianist, left behind an invaluable documentary legacy. It is scattered in over 20 archives and other remembrance institutions in Poland and other countries. It comprises biographical materials but above all, documents of almost 60 years of his artistic, political and diplomatic activity. When Paderewski became the head of the National Unity Government in the reborn Poland, he was already a world-famous artist. At the same time, he accepted the position of Minister of Foreign Affairs and Polish delegate to the peace conference in Paris. Over the course of less than a year (from 16 January to 9 December 1919) of activity, he played a key role in the struggle for Polish borders and building the organisational basis for the sovereign Polish state. Enjoying the trust of the leaders of Western powers, including US President Woodrow Wilson, he quickly achieved recognition of Poland as a sovereign state, allied with the Entente. At the Paris conference, supported by Roman Dmowski and historians (Szymon Askenazy, Oskar Halecki, Władysław Konopczyński) and geographers (e.g. Eugeniusz Romer), he fought diplomatic battles for the inclusion of Cieszyn Silesia, Upper Silesia, Eastern Galicia, and the lands of the Prussian partition including Gdańsk, into Poland. His resignation from the post of prime minister did not end his activity for Poland, which he continued as an émigré until his death in 1941.
