Opis:
In this work, the influence of both characteristics of the lens and misalignment of the incident beams on roughness measurement is presented. To investigate how the focal length and diameter affect the degree of correlation between the speckle patterns, a set of experiments with different lenses is performed. On the other hand, the roughness when the beams separated by an amount are non-coincident at the same point on the sample is measured. To conclude the study, the uncertainty of the method is calculated.

Opis:
Non-invasive damage monitoring of concrete structures by means of Acoustic Emission (AE) requires multitransducers, multi-channel acquisition, high sampling frequency and long observation time. Owing to its propagation in concrete, the signal from AE reduces its amplitude during the propagation, and, consequently, some events can be lost due to lower signal intensity than the trigger level set on one sensor only. The innovative proposal discussed in the paper consists in the introduction of a Flat Amplifier and Trigger generator block (FAT) in order to generate a logical trigger when the AE is detected by any transducer. Experimental tests confirm the effectiveness of the FAT to acquire all the AE events and to increase the evaluation accuracy of damage indexes.

Opis:
Advanced metallic material processes (titanium) are used or developed for the production of heavily loaded flying components (in fan blade construction). The article presents one process for diagnosing the blade interior by means of laser ultrasonography. The inspection of these parts, which are mainly made of titanium, requires the determination of the percentage of bonded grain sizes from around 10 to 30 žm. This is primarily due to the advantages of a high signal-to-noise ratio and good detection sensitivity. The results of the research into the internal blade structure are attached.

Opis:
In the paper a method using active thermography and a neural algorithm for material defect characterization is presented. Experimental investigations are conducted with the stepped heating method, so-called time-resolved infrared radiometry, for the test specimen made of a material with low thermal diffusivity. The results of the experimental investigations were used in simulations of artificial neural networks. Simulations are performed for three datasets representing three stages of the heating process occurring in the investigated sample. In this work, the simulation research aimed to determine the accuracy of defect depth estimation with the use of the mentioned algorithm is descibed.

Opis:
In the framework of non-destructive evaluation (NDE), an accurate and precise characterization of defects is fundamental. This paper proposes a novel method for characterization of partial detachment of thermal barrier coatings from metallic surfaces, using the long pulsed thermography (LPT). There exist many applications, in which the LPT technique provides clear and intelligible thermograms. The introduced method comprises a series of post-processing operations of the thermal images. The purpose is to improve the linear fit of the cooling stage of the surface under investigation in the logarithmic scale. To this end, additional fit parameters are introduced. Such parameters, defined as damage classifiers, are represented as image maps, allowing for a straightforward localization of the defects. The defect size information provided by each classifier is, then, obtained by means of an automatic segmentation of the images. The main advantages of the proposed technique are the automaticity (due to the image segmentation procedures) and relatively limited uncertainties in the estimation of the defect size.

Opis:
Specimens of Si single crystals with different crystal orientation [100] and [110] were studied by Electro-Ultrasonic Spectroscopy (EUS) and Resonant Ultrasonic Spectroscopy (RUS). A silicon single crystal is an anisotropic crystal, so its properties are different in different directions in the material relative to the crystal orientation. EUS is based on interaction of two signals: an electric AC signal and an ultrasonic signal, which are working on different frequencies. The ultrasonic wave affects the charge carriers' transport in the structures and the intermodulation electrical signal which is created due to the interaction between the ultrasonic wave and charge carriers, is proportional to the density of structural defects. RUS enables to measure natural frequencies of free elastic vibrations of a simply shaped specimen by scanning a selected frequency range including the appropriate resonances of the measured specimens.

Opis:
Ultrasonic Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) is a powerful tool used for testing, verification, and inspection of material, especially for quality control and assurance. The key applications are the identification of flaws, cracks, irregularities, defects, and estimation of material thickness. The standard documents available for ultrasonic NDT are used as a guideline for the specifications and certification of the calibration reference standard block (RSB). The method for metrological characterization of the testing blocks is not specifically addressed in standard documents and is left to the wisdom of metrologists working in the ultrasonic calibration laboratories to adopt the suitable one. The ultrasonic flaw detector (UFD) is used most widely in ultrasonic NDT. The International Institute of Welding (IIW) V1 RSB standard is used as a reference to ascertain the functionalities of UFDs. In this article, we have proposed a new methodology for calibration of RSB and evaluation of associated measurement uncertainty along with influencing parameters. The proposed method conforms to the international standard ISO 2400:2012 and Indian standard IS 4904:2006 for validation purposes. According to these standards, the clauses for RSB e.g., dimension and quality of material have been examined. The expanded measurement uncertainty in thickness, ultrasonic longitudinal velocity, ultrasonic attenuation, parallelism and perpendicularity is ±0.068 mm, ±6.70 m/s, ±0.22 dB, and ±0.066 mm, respectively. The measurement uncertainty of these parameters is well within as per clauses stipulated in the standard documents except the ultrasonic longitudinal velocity for the IS standards.

Opis:
Noise spectroscopy as a highly sensitive method for non-destructive diagnostics of semiconductor devices was applied to solar cells based on crystalline silicon with a view to evaluating the quality and reliability of this solar cell type. The experimental approach was used in a reverse-biased condition where the internal structure of solar cells, as well as pn-junction itself, was electrically stressed and overloaded by a strong electric field. This gave rise to a strong generation of a current noise accompanied by local thermal instabilities, especially in the defect sites. It turned out that local temperature changes could be correlated with generation of flicker noise in a wide frequency range. Furthermore, an electrical breakdown in a non-stable form also occurred in some specific local regions what created micro-plasma noise with a two-level current fluctuation in the form of a Lorentzian-like noise spectrum. The noise research was carried out on both of these phenomena in combination with the spectrally-filtered electroluminescence mapping in the visible/near-infrared spectrum range and the dark lock-in infrared thermography in the far-infrared range. Then the physical origin of the light emission from particular defects was searched by a scanning electron microscope and additionally there was performed an experimental elimination of one specific defect by the focused ion beam milling.

Opis:
This study proposes a triple-optical-path digital speckle pattern interferometry (DSPI) setup for measuring the full-field out-of-plane displacement and two orthogonal slopes simultaneously as well as independently. The designed setup contains one conventional out-of-plane speckle interferometer and two orthogonal modified shearographic interferometers with dual-observation geometry. In the setup, one laser device is used as the coherent source, and three monochrome cameras placed along a single line are used as the image acquisition device. Three correlation fringe patterns, one out-of-plane displacement fringe pattern and two slope fringe patterns, are captured synchronously by three cameras, and then are analysed using the phase-shifting technique to extract the phase distributions. The examinations of a practical non-contact measurement and a non-destructive testing (NDT) application by using the proposed setup are carried out in this study.
