Opis:
In the southern part of the Woświn lake there is a vast peninsula called “the Devilish Causeway” by local people. On the peninsula there is located an archaeological site that was excavated by Alfred Rowe in 1934. During the research a stone construction measuring 10 x 11 m was found. Function of this feature had aroused controversy but in the end, W. Filipowiak’s hypothesis that these were the remains of a Slavic cult construction was accepted in the literature. Further analysis however of the archive materials has shown that the stone construction found by A. Rowe is not a Slavic cult construction but an underpinning of a wooden one- or more-storey building such as those built by medieval knighthood within motte-and-bailey castles or so-called “manor houses on a mound”. It is likely that its owner was a representative of the wealthy family von Wedel.

An unusual object was given to the Archaeology Department of the Museum in Koszalin in 2007. It was a circular metal seal with a heraldic depiction. This latter is a head of a ram on an escutcheon. Further to an in-depth analysis of the heraldic depiction, it was possible to establish that there is a high probability that the seal dates from the first half of the 14th century, and that it was used by representatives of the knight village leaders from Strzelce.

Opis:
The oldest illustration that presents a plan of the monastery and adjoining buildings is a vignette on the Lubinus’s map from 1618, made 83 years after a revocation of the monastery in 1535. At that time many buildings had been already demolished. Further devastation of the monastery, affecting in particular the side aisles of the church and a considerable part of the claustrum, took place in 1720. Later, houses and outbuildings were built in place of the monastery, structures which were still used after 1945. In 1960 a suggestion was made to clear and protect the abbey against further devastation.Owing to the necessity of establishing the extent of the monastery and ensuring that the church was an area of special conservation care, it was necessary to carry out architectural and archaeological research. More detailed study of the revealed remains was made after the end of the research in 1964. The measurements of the church and all monastic wings were established as well as stages of their completion. In the first stage, from c.1210 to about the half of the 13th century (most likely to 1247), on the initiative of the abbot Rudolf, a chancel, a transept and two bays of the church central nave were built as well as northern parts of the wings: to the west was the house of the conversi. In the second stage, between 1250 and 1300, the next 6 bays of the church central nave were built; the west and east wings were completed reaching their full size which is preserved to the present day; in addition a south wing with a separate refectory was built from a scratch. At the same time cloisters and two wells were also constructed: one by the house of the conversi and the other, across from the refectory. In the third stage, in 1347, the church presbytery was converted providing it with a many-sided termination. Further excavations were carried out in 1978-1983 aiming to reveal the scope of the abbot’s house and find the relicts of the cloister garth. As the result of the archaeological excavations, it was established that the abbot’s house with precincts was located between two canals that supplied the monastery with water from the Płonia river and channelled its sewage. It was also confirmed that it was built in two stages. In the first stage, dated by historians to years after 1300 – most likely c.1330, while the earliest possible date based on the archaeological materials is the second half of the 14th century, the northern part of the precinct was built together with the cloister and outbuildings. In the second stage dated by historians initially to the 15th century, the abbot’s house was extended to the south as far as the channel, and it was provided with a monumental, richly moulded portal from the side of the cloister garth that stressed the functional importance of the building.

Opis:
This article is a study of the collection of the ancient metal artefacts that were found in the Ina valley to the south of Suchań, Stargard Szczeciński County. The finds are dated from the Bronze Age to the Roman Period. The collection is of great informative value not only because of unusual environment of deposition, but also because some artefacts are of great material and artistic value. Two objects deserve special mention: a necklace of a Wendelring type and a silver fibula with a double spring, for which there are no close analogies. Furthermore, because of the fact that relatively little is known in terms of archaeology in this area, the finds give new information that help understand the regional cultural situation. It is worth mentioning that from the Bronze Age there are only tools and weaponry, i.e. a sickle, axes and a spearhead, whereas from the Hallstatt Period and the Roman Period aretefacts consist only of ornaments and coins. It is also important to note that there is a chronological as well as typological similarity of the finds from Suchań to the finds from the site at Buczek, Białogard County. Artefacts from the Bronze Age probably served as substitute grave goods or sacrificial objects, whereas the finds from the Roman Period could be sacrificial.

Starogard Łobeski is a settlement situated about 8 km to the east of Resko on the east bank of the Rega river. Undoubtedly the area’s most interesting archaeological site from the Early Middle Ages, this well-preserved stronghold is located about 2 km to the south of Starogard. The feature has been known since at least the 1930s, and it has been excavated twice archaeologically. The first excavations were carried out by Adolf Stubenrauch in 1891 with further excavations being undertaken by Hans-Jürgen Eggers in 1938. This paper presents the results of this research which hitherto has not been widely published.

The problem of the meaning of miniature zoo- and anthropomorphic artefacts regardless of the finds’ chronology is the subject of very lively discussion in literature. It is no different in the case of small figural sculptures from early medieval Pomerania. Characteristics of specific groups of such representations and individual artefacts appear in the literature sporadically and usually in the context of broader research problems. Usually they are associated with customs related generally to religious beliefs or everyday life, the practical sphere of everyday life, where they are treated primarily as toys. There still lacks a broader approach to the problem using the findings of religious and anthropological studies as well as the use of ethnographic analogies. The aim of this text is to undertake such a broader analysis. Three groups of artefacts underwent a detailed analysis: so-called miniature idols, representations of horses and representations of boats. These artefacts, because of their nature, could have fulfilled several functions at the same time. An important role was probably also played by raw material from which these items were made, which allowed a transformation or destruction of given representations. Although a utilitarian function for these objects cannot be completely negated, as in the case of boats, which, in some cases, could have been used as toys, in our opinion they should be associated with a wider sphere of symbolic and religious life, where each element is perceived in mythical terms.

In 1969 in Choszczno, a hoard of post-medieval coins was discovered. The coins had been placed in a pottery vessel, which, after its extraction from the ground was smashed and the coins were divided between the finders and witnesses. Employees of the Museum of Western Pomerania (now the National Museum in Szczecin) probably recovered all the scattered coins. In total, in the collection of the Department of Numismatics there are 3266 coins, including ones of Philip Julius (1584–1626), Francis I (1589–1620), Ulrich I (1589–1622), Bogislaw XIV (1580–1637) and Charles X Gustav (1654–1660). Almost 98% of the coins are double shillings minted by the rulers of the Duchy of Pomerania from the House of Griffins and the king of Sweden, Charles X Gustav.

Opis:
This study is devoted to four early medieval swords stored in the National Museum in Szczecin. The paper is a continuation of the weapon collection from the Szczecin Museum presentation, with first part published recently (Klimek, Kucypera, Kurasiński, Pudło 2011). All swords presented here were posted before, but, thus far, bereft of detailed formal, chronological and technological analyzes. The oldest presented specimen was found in Smołdzino, Słupsk District. No detailed location of the find is known, apart from the fact that it was uncovered by sand from a dune. It is preserved as a few pieces coming from a broken blade. Another two swords were also preserved partially, both with almost completely missing blades. They are most probably stray finds from the River Oder near Szczecin. The last, youngest specimen, is a loose find from Złocieniec, Drawsko District. The Smołdzino sword has been dated to the 2nd half of the 8th–half of the 10th centuries, however, it has to be noted that the technique in which its blade was forged (piled/sandwitched) does not allow to completely rule out the possibility of the sword’s earlier (La Tène period) metric. First of the Oder (Szczecin) swords has been classified as the younger type X by Petersen and dated to the 10th–half of the 11th centuries. The second specimen has been identified as Oakeshott’s type ?,B,3 and Geibig’s Kombinationstyp 15-III. It has been linked with the period of the 10th–beginning of the 12th centuries. Both specimens picked from the Oder River had blades forged by welding cutting-edge rods into central core pieces. Their lower guards and pommels (with, possibly, one exception) were formed from single homogeneous billets of iron. By far, the best preserved sword was the one from Złocieniec, classified here as type XI,E,1 by Oakeshott and Kombinationstyp 19 (hilt) and 10 (blade) by Geibig. In view of the presented analogies, it has been fixed to the chronological frame of the 12th–beginning of the 13th century. Unfortunately, due to external factors, no materials examination has been carried out on this weapon.

Abstract: The article presents the results of the research on the Pomeranian culture pottery finds from site 4 in Miechęcino, Kołobrzeg district. The main goal of the article is to attempt to identify the stratigraphical relationship between grave 159 and feature 26 (the one containing a sword of the XVIII B type according to J. Fogel). For this reason the authors analysed pottery finds from both features using archaeological and physicochemical methods (X-ray fluorescence and thermogravimetric analyses).

Abstract: Cistercian nuns were brought to Koszalin in the years 1277-1278. Their abbey was dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary. The source material for the history of Koszalin convent reflects its complex structure. It enables us to list the heading provisors, abbesses and convent elders, common nuns as well as knights subordinate to the abbey and townspeople renting land. The basis of the Koszalin convent’s economy was real estate, land scattered in many places mainly in the Koszalin and Kołobrzeg areas. The convent’s estate became the property of the dukes of Pomerania in the 16th century, while the convent building served as the residence of the dukes of Pomerania and the bishops of Kamień Pomorski.

Abstract: The article is a polemical response to Błażej Stanisławski’s (2011) comments on early medieval construction in Wolin published in Volume VI/VII of ‘Materiały Zachodniopomorskie’. I do not agree with the dating of the oldest log construction and wattle-and-daub construction buildings. I also question the terminology used by this researcher, Furthermore, I believe there is some exaggerated interpretation of finds, unreliable reconstructions of post-and-beam buildings, erroneous selection of illustrations for the presented issues and a lack of examples as well as references supporting the theory of Frisian analogies of the post-and-beam construction. In the section on palisade construction structures I polemicize B. Stanisławski on Wolin long houses, we agree that the presence of the palisade construction buildings in Wolin is not synonymous with the presence of Scandinavian settlers. The vertical-post log construction was, in my opinion, presented too briefly based on only one building from trench 6 in Wolin’s Old Town. In summary, I conclude that the work by B. Stanisławski has many shortcomings, the reinterpretations of discoveries of older researchers are unconvincing and the presented documentation is inaccurate.
