Opis:
This study provides a systematic review of the existing academic literature describing the key components of eMaintenance. The current literature is reviewed by utilizing a number of academic databases including Scopus, SpringerLink and ScienceDirect, and Google Search is used to find relevant academic and peer-reviewed journal articles concerning eMaintenance. The literature describes eMaintenance as an advanced maintenance strategy that takes advantage of the Internet, information and communication technologies, wireless technologies and cloud computing. eMaintenance systems are used to provide real time analyses based on real time data to offer a number of solutions and to define maintenance tasks. The collection and analysis of appropriate maintenance and process data are critical to create robust ‘maintenance intelligence’ and finally improvements in manufacturing costs, safety, environmental impact, and equipment reliability. This paper describes how the scientific discussion on eMaintenance has expanded significantly during the last decade, creating a need for an up-to-date review. As a conclusion, three research gaps in the area of eMaintenance are identified, including evaluating the benefits of eMaintenance, agreeing on a comprehensive definition, and developing tools and structures for cooperative eMaintenance.

Opis:
The article addresses the problem of determining the sequence of entering orders for production in a flexible manufacturing system implementing technological operations of cutting sheet metal. Adopting a specific ranking of production orders gives rise to the vector of delays and waste in the form of incompletely used sheets. A new method was postulated for determining the optimal sequence of orders in terms of two criteria: the total cost of delays and the amount of production waste. The examples illustrate the advantages of the proposed method compared with the popular heuristic principles.

Within classic German manufacturing structures, costs of resources exceed all other cost factors by 46% [1]. Solitary focus on energy or labor costs as sources to raise companies profit no longer seems adequate. Nowadays material costs of the manufacturing industry are about 500 billion euro per year, connected with a saving potential of 100 billion euro per year. Also the belonging for sustainably produced products is raising and becoming a factor for guaranteed purchases [2]. A small and medium-sized enterprise fitted approach, which ensures to increase the transparency of internal process structures and allows a resource driven, ecological and economical assessment, is the main subject of this article.

Opis:
This article extends the former results concerning the routing flow-shop problem to minimize the makespan on the case with buffers, non-zero ready times and different speeds of machines. The corresponding combinatorial optimization problem is formulated. The exact as well as four heuristic solution algorithms are presented. The branch and bound approach is applied for the former one. The heuristic algorithms employ known constructive idea proposed for the former version of the problem as well as the Tabu Search metaheuristics. Moreover, the improvement procedure is proposed to enhance the quality of both heuristic algorithms. The conducted simulation experiments allow evaluating all algorithms. Firstly, the heuristic algorithms are compared with the exact one for small instances of the problem in terms of the criterion and execution times. Then, for larger instances, the heuristic algorithms are mutually compared. The case study regarding the maintenance of software products, given in the final part of the paper, illustrates the possibility to apply the results for real-world manufacturing systems.

Opis:
The presented method is constructed for optimum scheduling in production lines with parallel machines and without intermediate buffers. The production system simultaneously performs operations on various types of products. Multi-option products were taken into account – products of a given type may differ in terms of details. This allows providing for individual requirements of the customers. The one-level approach to scheduling for multioption products is presented. The integer programming is used in the method – optimum solutions are determined: the shortest schedules for multi-option products. Due to the lack of the intermediate buffers, two possibilities are taken into account: no-wait scheduling, possibility of the machines being blocked by products awaiting further operations. These two types of organizing the flow through the production line were compared using computational experiments, the results of which are presented in the paper.

Opis:
Cyber Physical Systems are an evolution of embedded systems featuring a tight combination of collaborating computational elements that control physical entities. CPSs promise a great potential of innovation in many areas including manufacturing and production. This is because we obtain a very powerful, flexible, modular infrastructure allowing easy (re) configurability and fast ramp-up of manufacturing applications by building a manufacturing system with modular mechatronic components (for machining, transportation and storage) and embedded intelligence, by integrating them into a system, through a network connection. However, when building such kind of architectures, the way to supply the needed domain knowledge to real manufacturing applications arises as a problem to solve. In fact, a CPS based architecture for manufacturing is made of smart but independent manufacturing components without any knowledge of the role they have to play together in the real world of manufacturing applications. Ontologies can supply such kind of knowledge, playing a very important role in CPS for manufacturing. The paper deals with this intriguing theme, also presenting an implementation of this approach in a research project for the open automation of manufacturing systems, in which the power of CPS is complemented by the support of an ontology of the manufacturing domain.

Opis:
The market of consumer goods requires nowadays quick response to customer needs. As a consequence, this is transferred to the time restrictions that the semi-finished product manufacturer must meet. Therefore the cost of manufacturing cannot determine how production processes are designed, and the main evaluation function of manufacturing processes is the response time to customers’ orders. One of the ideas for implementing this idea is the QRM (Quick Response Manufacturing) production organization system. The purpose of the research undertaken by the authors was to develop an innovative solution in the field of production structure, allowing for the implementation of the QRM concept in a Contract Manufacturer, which realizes its tasks according to engineering-to-order (ETO) system in conditions defined as High Mix, Low Volume, High Complexity. The object of the research was to select appropriate methods for grouping products assuming that certain operations will be carried out in traditional but well-organized technological and/or linear cells. The research was carried out in one of the largest producers of sheet metal components in Europe. Pre-completed groupings for data obtained from the company had indicated that – among the classical methods – the best results had been given by the following methods: King’s Algorithm (otherwise called: Binary Ordering, Rank Order Clustering), k-means, and Kohonen’s neural networks. The results of the tests and preliminary simulations based on the data from the company proved that the implementation of the QRM concept does not have to be associated with the absolute formation of multi-purpose cells. It turned out that the effect of reducing the response time to customer needs can be obtained by using hybrid structures that combine solutions characteristic of cellular systems with traditional systems such as a technological, linear, or mixed structure. However, this requires the application of technological solutions with the highest level of organization.

Opis:
Rapidly rotating systems such as centrifuges are widely used in medicine and laboratories to efficiently separate different constituents of liquids. Rotors, which hold sample containers, are an essential part of centrifuges. Since they are subjected to extreme mechanical loads, rotors are one of a centrifuge’s core safety components. Their deficits served as the point of departure for the development of a novel manufacturing technology, which is based on carbon fiber-reinforced polymers (CFRP). Its supporting structure is entirely in the loading plane, thus enabling the rotor to absorb higher centrifugal forces while requiring the same amount of material. The new design concept for the load-bearing structure includes a geodesically molded annular support member. It transmits forces better than present products and increases rigidity. In order to eliminate the known problems with obtaining the necessary manufacturing quality of hollow fiber composite bodies, the authors developed the process of centrifugal infusion. Their proposed solution is based on generating higher gravitation forces, thus effectively eliminating detrimental gas pockets and simultaneously optimizing surface quality and impregnation.
