Opis:
Current fast development requires continuous improvement of employees’ skills and knowledge. Therefore, companies are looking for the best way for improving the employees’ qualifications and understanding of new concepts and tools which have to be implemented in manufacturing areas. One method employs gamification for this purpose. The aim of this paper is to present how gamification can increase the acquisition of knowledge concerning lean manufacturing concept implementation. Gamification is an active learning approach for people who will understand the subject easier by ‘feeling’ and ‘touching’ personally the analysed problems. The research utilized a questionnaire which assessed the game participants’ engagement level. The assessment focused specifically on the participants’ motivation, cognitive processing and social aspects. The participants were also examined before and after the game in order to assess the increase of their understanding of different lean manufacturing topics and tools. Five different games with different groups of participants were played. The results confirmed the hypothesis that gamification has a positive impact on the knowledge acquisition as well as on motivation, cognitive processing and social aspects. Finally, various insights on how to better design, conduct and utilize gamification in the similar technical context are presented.

Opis:
Within classic German manufacturing structures, costs of resources exceed all other cost factors by 46% [1]. Solitary focus on energy or labor costs as sources to raise companies profit no longer seems adequate. Nowadays material costs of the manufacturing industry are about 500 billion euro per year, connected with a saving potential of 100 billion euro per year. Also the belonging for sustainably produced products is raising and becoming a factor for guaranteed purchases [2]. A small and medium-sized enterprise fitted approach, which ensures to increase the transparency of internal process structures and allows a resource driven, ecological and economical assessment, is the main subject of this article.

Opis:
Eastern European companies have experienced various and radical transformations, as result of the economic crises and turbulences, which exposed structural weaknesses. In the meantime, long-term challenges - such as globalization, shift of power centers from the national level to international structures or scarcity of resources - intensify. Given this context, it is mandatory for companies to develop strategies aiming at being competitive. The paper aims to propose an exploratory analysis regarding a Swedish-Finnish owned company active in Romania - that was capable to build a strategic vision of its future, to define a plan for change and to implement the necessary measures for the project success. The author has conducted a study and developed a case along a project aiming at continuous improvement (Kaizen) in this company, emphasizing its main results. In order to analyze the project of implementing Kaizen methodology, the research initiative consisted both of primary and secondary research. The paper analyzes the project from the point of view of economic situation of the company and environment, time constraints, budget limitations, technical level/quality performance and risks. The central finding is that concept-oriented projects run by an advanced-country company could succeed in a less economically developed and culturally different country - even in turbulent periods and not even in highly dynamic and technologically advanced industries - if the top management is strongly committed and management team completely involved. The paper concludes with study results, as well as some lessons learnt and managerial implications - useful for future similar projects either within the company under debate or by other organizations in similar circumstances.

Opis:
The application of the 5S methodology to warehouse management represents an important step for all manufacturing companies, especially for managing products that consist of a large number of components. Moreover, from a lean production point of view, inventory management requires a reduction in inventory wastes in terms of costs, quantities and time of non-added value tasks. Moving towards an Industry 4.0 environment, a deeper understanding of data provided by production processes and supply chain operations is needed: the application of Data Mining techniques can provide valuable support in such an objective. In this context, a procedure aiming at reducing the number and the duration of picking processes in an Automated Storage and Retrieval System. Association Rule Mining is applied for reducing time wasted during the storage and retrieval activities of components and finished products, pursuing the space and material management philosophy expressed by the 5S methodology. The first step of the proposed procedure requires the evaluation of the picking frequency for each component. Historical data are analyzed to extract the association rules describing the sets of components frequently belonging to the same order. Then, the allocation of items in the Automated Storage and Retrieval System is performed considering (a) the association degree, i.e., the confidence of the rule, between the components under analysis and (b) the spatial availability. The main contribution of this work is the development of a versatile procedure for eliminating time waste in the picking processes from an AS/RS. A real-life example of a manufacturing company is also presented to explain the proposed procedure, as well as further research development worthy of investigation.
