This paper is a presentation of Aquinas’ concept of change (lat. mutatio) and its consequences for corporeal creatures (lat. creatura corporali). Within Thomas’ philosophy, it can be proved that creatures are sentenced to unceasing change and cannot stop changing. That’s why the very purpose of change – full actualisation – is never attainable. Creatures are imperfect beings, and ex sui natura cannot attain perfection. Such a vision can lead to a conviction that the world of corporeal creatures is absurd. A short solution to the problem of absurdity is given with the use of Aquinas’ concept of participation. The structure of this paper is as follows. In the first section some basic limitations for the sake of this paper are made. In the second the concept of corporeal creatures is outlined. The third section analyses the definition of change. The fourth one presents various kinds of change. The next three are, respectively, proof of the creatures’ unceasing change, impossibility of full actualisation, and imperfection. The last one is an abbreviated presentation of the concept of participation as a reply to the question of the world’s absurdity.

The article analyzes the role of matter (materia prima) in the philosophy of Thomas Aquinas, from both the systematic and historicalphilosophical aspect. It shows that Arab tradition (Avicenna and Averroes) and its interpreters from the first half of the 13ᵗʰ century played an important and very complex role in his reception of philosophical tools derived from Aristotle. The article also presents the process by which Aquinas was able to unite hylomorphism with the metaphysical theory of real distinction esse/essentia, which paved the way for a non-dualistic conception of man.

Both Kant and Aquinas ground moral action in reason and will; however, this seems to be the end of the similarity in their approaches with respect to the role of reason and will in moral action. The goal of this essay is to show that Aquinas’ notion of the will as the rational appetite is superior to Kant’s notion of good will in providing the foundation for moral action. To this effect, I analyze the relationship between will and reason in their moral philosophies. I discuss Kant’s notion of will in both its moral and phenomenal modes, and Aquinas’ notion of will as the rational appetite and of human act. I argue that Aquinas’s notion of will and moral act is superior to that of Kant for several reasons. First and foremost, the notion of morally worthy action accommodates human nature with its inclinations, tendencies, and desires. It is not divorced from human physical and emotional nature. Second, in contrast to Kant’s will, Aquinas’s will retains its own identity. That is, it avails itself of reason’s search for truth and meaning, yet it does not collapse into reason, specifically logic. Third, Aquinas’ will is dynamic. In contrast to Kant’s, which in order to be moral simply follows the laws of logic, Aquinas’ will desires the good and propels a person to action. Finally, Aquinas’ notion of human act, in the sense that it involves both the counsel of reason and will’s capacity to desire the good, offers a more holistic understanding of human moral act and its possible consequences. In contrast to Kant’s will’s rigid command to obey the law, Aquinas’ notion of will and human act also gives reasons why we need to be moral. We must act morally, not only because our action would otherwise be self-contradictory or not live up to the letter of the law, but because our choices and our actions have real consequences in the world.

In the 1960s, before the promulgation of Humanae Vitae, the Catholic philosophers Elizabeth Anscombe and Herbert McCabe OP debated whether there are convincing natural law arguments for the claim that contraception violates an exceptionless moral norm. This article revisits those arguments and critiques McCabe’s approach to natural law, concerned primarily with ‘social sin’ and not simply violations of ‘right reason,’ as one particularly ill-suited to addressing questions in sexual ethics and unable both to distinguish properly between certain forms of sexual wrongdoing and more obviously social sins such as theft, and also to distinguish between ‘natural’ and ‘unnatural’ sexual acts. Anscombe’s views, I argue, are closer to those of Thomas Aquinas and provide reasons for making the distinctions McCabe does not. An argument concerning the nature of the institution of marriage and the effects of non-marital acts on that institution is proposed as a way of strengthening Anscombe’s argument that contraception violates an exceptionless moral norm.

The aim of this paper is to present and confront Thomistic and Freudian theories of conscience despite the essential differences between these two concepts. According to St. Thomas Aquinas conscience is an act of practical reason that recognizes objective moral truth in a receptive way. On the contrary, Sigmund Freud states that conscience is a part of the superego which supervises and controls human behavior taking into consideration changeable ethical norms and values. This paper is an attempt to complete Aquinas’s classical doctrine of conscience with Freud’s contemporary yet controversial psychoanalytic theory of personality, especially in the matter of pathological feeling of guilt.

Artykuł porusza zagadnienie wpływu nauki o aniołach Pseudo-Dionizego Areopagity i Tomasza z Akwinu na filozofię społeczno-polityczną w średniowieczu. Kluczowym pojęciem, którym posługuje się angelologia Pseudo-Dionizego jest „hierarchia”. Koncepcja hierarchii jest osadzona na założeniach metafizyki neoplatońskiej, stąd też Pseudo-Dionizy przedstawia byty anielskie w porządku enneadycznym. Tak przedstawiona hierarchia wywarła wpływ na rozumienie i uzasadnienie porządku społecznego w wiekach średnich oraz na legitymizację struktury władzy politycznej. Wreszcie, wedle wymienionych autorów głównym celem społeczności anielskiej jest jedność stworzenia w Bogu. Tym samym również idealny porządek polityczny ziemski musi realizować cele eschatologiczne.
The article deals with the issue regarding the influence of Pseudo-Dionysius the Areopagite and Thomas Aquinas’ science about the angels on the socio-political philosophy in the Middle Ages. The key concept in Pseudo-Dionysius’ angelology is “hierarchy”. This concept of hierarchy is based on the assumptions of Neoplatonic metaphysics, hence Pseudo-Dionysius presents angelic beings in the enneadic order. The hierarchy presented in this way influenced the understanding and justification of the social order in the middle ages, and the legitimacy of the structure of political power. Finally, according to these authors, the main goal of the angelic community is the unity of creation in God. Thus, the ideal earthly political order must also pursue eschatological goals.
