Risk is a common phenomenon in daily life of natural and legal persons. It concerns all branches of the economy and relates to making decisions concerning the unknown future. There are various types of risk related to business operations and the majority of business entities take effort to protect themselves against its adverse effects. The development of the field of risk management allows for partial or total risk elimination. Road transport is exposed to various types of risk which may lead to usually considerable damage and losses. This publication is aimed at presenting selected groups of risk factors occurring in the logistics process and at determining their influence on enterprise functioning. It is also supposed to emphasize the significant role of risk analysis in the transportation business.

The first part of the article shows the structure of the companies whose business activities are focused on the area of logistics. In the second part relationships between risk management and other business processes that form together an integrated system of the enterprise management are characterised.

An investment project as an undertaking for the future, more or less foreseeable, is a priori encumbered with the possibility of occurrence of disturbances. In recent years there have appeared significant changes in the scope of execution of construction projects, connected with the investment execution time, manner of financing, investors, and the environment in which the given project is executed. That fact determines the need, or even the necessity, to conduct the research into the issues of risk assessment and its utilitarian aspects. That problem applies also to construction projects, including water supply and sewage projects. An example of the project with all kinds of threats characteristic of such types of investments is the project entitled “Complex protection of the underground waters in the Kielce agglomeration.” The risk factors result from the complexity and specificity of that type of projects. The presented article is an introduction to the discussion on the issues of assessing the risk of execution of water supply and sewage projects. The intention of the authors was to present the specificity of that type of projects and the general identification of the risk factors accompanying them.

Recent developments and events – e.g. trend to globalization, outsourcing activities, shorter life time cycles, but also natural disasters and others – have led to the increase of risks in business. Furthermore, regional and global financial and economic crises have brought additional and often unexpected risks into business. Therefore, risk management has been identified as one of the important management tasks supporting a company in reaching its objectives. In many countries, implementation and use of risk management is required by law. In Germany, the so-called KonTraG (Corporate Sector Supervision and Transparency Act) prescribes risk management for all incorporated companies. Although there is no mandated risk management for other legal forms of organizations, the KonTraG has also impact on those forms of organizations, especially on attestation by external auditors. This paper focuses on the industrial sector of logistics service providers (LSPs). The logistics service industry in Germany is a fragmented market. Although there are some ‘big players’, i.e. large LSPs, that are involved in national and international logistics activities, there also exists a large number of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). For those small and medium-sized LSPs, risk management is not compulsory. Nevertheless, they face at least the same risks as the big players – if not even more (e.g. due to smaller market shares and lower market power). There is a number of questions involved with risk management in logistics enterprises: Is risk management an approach used by LSPs – and to what extend? Who initiates risk management in logistics enterprises? What is the degree of maturity of risk management in the logistics industry? What tools and methods are used by LSPs? Are companies evaluating risk management as beneficial? Not much research has been conducted in the logistics service industry so far. Thus, to answer those questions, the authors started to conduct a first empirical study in 2008. This study was followed by a second field study in 2011, i.e. directly after the first global financial and economic crisis. In 2013, the authors carried out the third empirical study on the status of risk management in logistics enterprises in Germany. The study allows for both stating the current status of risk management and identifying developments and trends in the logistics industry related to risk management. This paper intends to highlight the most important findings from the 2013 field study and to evaluate the status quo of risk management in logistics enterprises. It also specifies room for improvement to reach a higher degree of professionalism in risk management in the logistics industry.

Railway crossings are included in transport infrastructure designated by junction of railway lines with public roads, which are crossed on the level of rails. At railway crossings numerous hazards of losses/damages and harms to people and objects - participants of land transport are generated. For the requirements of risk management at railway crossings, RC-RISK method (Railway Crossing - Risk) has been worked out. This method is the implementation of the integrated TRANS-RISK method of risk management in transport. This article presents the model of railway crossings as areas of analyses in RC-RISK method. The model of railway crossing in RC-RISK method is a result of implementation of the rules of accepted formal scheme of description of railway crossing. This paper presents this formal scheme of description identifying railway crossings. General and particular rules of identification of elements of the model of railway crossings are also presented. Created model consists of 13 fields considering selected legal, technical and local conditions of the operation of railway crossings. The Poznań Railway Junction is presented. This junction includes 39 railway crossings and passages. On the basis of the railway crossing located in Krzesiny Street, the application of the model as areas of analyses of hazard risk management with RC-RISK method is presented on the basis of the railway crossing in Krzesiny Street.

In the paper is presented a conception of „three stages” of risk management in transport. International aviation organizations require Poland to define the so-called acceptable level of safety for traffic accidents. To calculate this, one requires statistical data on accidents. These, however, in recent years did not occur, or the size of the sample is insufficient. In the paper a method for predicting the number of accidents on the basis of information on air incidents is mentioned. This method can be efficient and effective if any regular relation between the air traffic accident and serious incident exists. In the paper a way to find this relation is proposed, by analyzing the relevant simulation models of serious incidents and accidents. For this purpose Petri nets were used.
