Opis:
Faunistic and ecological studies on saproxylic Collembola species were carried out in the Wigry National Park (NE Poland). Nine sites representing Tilio-Carpinetum, Serratulo-Pinetum and Peucedano-Pinetum habitats each including three different levels of disturbance were visited twice in 2015. Samples from fallen logs in different stages of decay, neighboring litter and soil as well as arboreal epiphytes were taken on each visit. The Collembola specimens were then extracted using Tullgren funnels resulting in a total of 73 838 specimens from 270 samples. Specimen identification revealed the occurrence of 63 species, including 5 saproxylobiontic, 7 saproxylophilous, 4 xerophilous species living in epiphytic mosses and lichens as well as 47 hemiedaphic or euedaphic species. This composition of saproxylic fauna seems to be typical for the region with the most diverse assemblages being found in Tilio-Carpinetum habitats, while Serratulo-Pinetum and Peucedano-Pinetum are clearly less diverse. Additionally, a slight decrease in the number of Collembola species with increasing forest disturbance was observed. Furthermore, an increase in the number of Collembola species with the degree of dead wood decomposition was also found. This indicates that saproxylic springtail assemblages are sensitive to anthropogenic changes.

Opis:
In Poland, the stormy discussion on the future of the Białowieża Forest has been ongoing already for a long time. The disputes are mostly focused on seeking answers to two questions: how to protect these unique forest ecosystems and whether forest management threatens their naturalness. The discussion has grown stronger after the recent, enormous outbreak of Ips typographus in the Forest. The Białowieża Forest has been managed for years with no negative effect. However, antagonists of foresters blame forest management for degradation of the Forest’s ecosystems, which is caused by favoring the economic value of timber expected to be harvested in keeping with the management plans of 3 forest districts located in the Białowieża Forest. At any rate, such assumption, has nothing to do with reality. During this discussion the idea to extend the national park for all the Białowieża Forest revived. In this paper, we reviewed the economic, social and ecological dimensions which should be taken into consideration before making a decision on extending the Białowieża National Park. It should be underlined that the Park’s area is already under the strict protection; furthermore, 2/3 of the area of neighboring managed forests are under legal protection (the nature reserves, NATURA 2000, the so-called reference forests, etc.). All things considered, we cannot find any reasonable purpose (ecological, financial or social) for expanding the Park’s area from 10 500 ha (present status) to 62 500 ha (after extension). Also, we are convinced that sustainable forest management conducted in managed parts of the Białowieża Forest, which comprises the fulfillment of all forest functions and services, should not be perceived as a threat to naturalness of the Forest’s ecosystems.

Opis:
The aim of the study was to characterise changes in the natural forest of the Białowieża National Park (BNP) Strict Reserve during a 15-year period. To allow for a more precise determination of the time course, overall duration and intensity of the observed changes, we further divided the 15-year period into shorter 2–7-year intervals. Taken together, the Strict Reserve forest stands cover 4584 hectares and they constitute the oldest part of the Białowieża Forest placed under protection in 1921. The measurements were carried out in 2000, 2002, 2004, 2011 and 2015 on 160 permanent sample plots, which are systematically distributed throughout the BNP Strict Reserve. During those 15 years, the volume of merchantable timber and the tree density fluctuated only slightly, because the reduction in standing volume due to a spruce and ash decline was compensated for by an increase in the standing volume of lime, hornbeam and alder. The volume increment and tree loss fluctuated slightly, but were nevertheless similar throughout the whole period between 2000 and 2015. The number of trees in the regeneration layer increased. The number of hornbeam trees in this layer increased continuously throughout the whole measurement period, while the number of maple trees started to increase in the second half. All together only five tree species growing in the BNP Strict Reserve progressed from the regeneration layer to the canopy layer in significant numbers. As a result, a gradual decrease in species diversity of forest stands may be expected. The rather stable, average volume of merchantable timber in the BNP Strict Reserve may be due to the fact that, in a forest with diverse habitats and high species richness, only few stands are subjected to strong disturbances in a given period of time. Repeated measurements during a relatively short period of time allowed the detecting some fairly quick changes occurring in natural lowland forests.

Opis:
The Czerwona Woda River is the main watercourse in the Stołowe Mountains National Park and drains the major part of the Stołowe Mts. It was regulated in the past, but its channel has been spontaneously naturalized. Now, managed spruce forests grow along almost the entire length of this small mountain stream. The aims of the present study were to investigate diversity of plant communities connected with the Czerwona Woda stream and to prepare detailed vegetation maps. The results obtained can potentially be a reference for future restoration projects implemented in the Stołowe Mountains National Park. As a result of vegetation mapping, there were distinguished 20 plant communities representative of the current vegetation and 3 communities representative of the potential vegetation. Phytosociological data on the vegetation was documented by making 62 phytosociological relevés. Based on these, 9 forest communities were distinguished, of which 3 were classified into associations, 1 – into alliance, 5 – into secondary forest communities. Furthermore, there were distinguished 14 non-forest communities, of which 10 were classified into associations. Several of the phytosociological classes distinguished have been reported for the first time in the Stołowe Mountains National Park.

The aim of this work was to determine preferences and satisfaction of tourists visiting the Polesie National Park (PPN). Preferences were defined in terms of the motives for visiting, ways of spending leisure time, the length and frequency of visits, knowledge of tourist attractions and awareness of the park’s financing. A survey was conducted in July – August 2019 gathering responses from 125 adults visiting the PPN tourist and bicycle paths. 100 correctly completed questionnaires were analyzed using the CART method to determine the respondents' satisfaction with spending leisure time in the park. The most frequently mentioned reasons for visiting were the beautiful landscape (28%) and the species richness (27%) of the park. 39% of respondents visited the area for the first time and 47% came for one day. Most visitors (65%) had very good knowledge of the tourist attractions in the PPN. Walking was the most common way (37%) for visitors to spend their leisure time in the park. More than half of the respondents (58%) would be willing to accept additional fees in order to help maintain and protect the park. The vast majority of the respondents indicated that they are satisfied (42%) or very satisfied (48%) with their visit to this area. Our statistical analysis indicated that asking the question about financing the park greatly impacted the responses to the qu- estion about visitor satisfaction, but was also correlated with the respondent’s place of residence as well as their knowledge of tourist attractions. The unique character, landscape as well as the natural, historical and cultural richness of the park combined with the well-maintained infrastructure are crucial to ensure a high level of visitor satisfaction.

Opis:
The composition and structure of beetle clusters living in rotting birch wood in Kampinos National Park was investigated. Photoeclectors were used to remove beetles from collected wood samples. Ten different research plots, each corresponding to a different forest type, were sampled every month over a 1-year period. A collection of 3256 beetles from 37 families comprising 206 species was amassed during the study. The collected beetles were divided into trophic families, species rareness, and constancy and site fidelity classes. At the more fertile sites, species only able to live on highly-decayed wood were collected (F3), also species facultatively able to live on either dying trees or decaying wood (F1), species that do not live on decayed wood (F0) and other rare species. Trophic group of carnivores (Z) provided most species on more fertile sites. At coniferous forest sites, as well as mixed deciduous forest sites, most individuals collected belonged to mycophagous and myxomycophagous trophic groups. At the other sites, the largest group of collected individuals was zoophagous. The number of rare species was positively related to site fertility. The average number of species increased in accordance with increasing site fertility, however this trend was only statistically significant when applied to moist coniferous forest (Bw) and moist mixed broadleaved forest (LMw) sites. The study revealed differences in the composition and structure of beetle clusters from different forest types. These differences were probably not directly related to site type, but more likely to the form of nature conservation imposed on a particular area and the potential number of decayed deciduous tree trunks. Two different clusters of saproxylic Coleoptera related to birch rot were distinguished: the first includes strictly protected deciduous forest types, the second contains the remaining forest types.

The aims of this study were to demonstrate the role of forests in the Roztoczański National Park as a refuge for rare and endangered saproxylic Coleoptera as well as recognition of entomological fauna related to dead wood. The study was conducted in the strictly protected are of Bukowa Góra from 20th April to 30th September 2012 and focused on the wood of beech and fir. We inventoried saproxylic beetles by means of nine ‘Netocia’ traps, which resulted in a total of 135 recorded species, of which 52 had not been reported in the park before. Twenty-one rare and endangered species were found. The high number of new species in the Roztoczański National Park indicates a high biodiversity value of the area. Our studies therefore show that the strictly protected area of Bukowa Góra is a biodiversity hot spot of saproxylic Coleoptera.

Opis:
In recent years, a significant growth in the population of the European beaver Castor fiber L., both in Poland and around the world, has been observed. Beavers significantly transform the natural environment around the sites where they occur. Therefore, it is important to accurately recognize the colonization patterns of new territories by the European beaver and to gain knowledge about the longevity of populations in already occupied areas. This applies especially to areas of natural value, including protected areas. Fieldwork carried out in the spring of 2021, provided information on the distribution of the European beaver and number of individuals in the Magura National Park (MNP) in the Beskid Niski, an arboreous mountain range in southern Poland. The collected data were compared with similar mappings conducted in this Park in 1996 and 2010. This allowed us to characterize the change dynamics of the beaver population in the MNP area and to describe the changes in spatial distribution of sites inhabited by beavers. During the period of 1996-2021, the population of the European beaver increased from 23-26 to 64 individuals in the study area, with a maximum of 68 in 2010. Beaver colonization of ever smaller watercourses draining higher-located catchments and a change in the characteristics of beaver-inhabited sites have been observed. The average number of dam structures within one site as well as site length have increased. Furthermore, the dominant dwelling type has changed from burrows and open-water lodges to bank lodges, which combine characteristics of the two former. We estimate that the period when beavers migrated further up along the watercourses in the studied area was in the years 2010-2021.

Opis:
Ungulates, primarily cervids, are keystone species as they play a crucial role in the forest ecosystem functioning. In commercial forests, hunting is the most intuitive and straightforward solution to regulate ungulate population density; managing large herbivores in protected areas is much more complicated. On the one hand, deer pressure on vegetation is a part of the natural processes shaping these ecosystems. On the other hand, however, when at high densities, deer can alter natural plant succession trajectories and generate conflicts in nature conservation. Nevertheless, information on population density or trends of these mammals is necessary to predict the potential role of ungulates in forest ecosystems and manage herbivore population densities. Unfortunately, most often, the managers of protected areas do not know the current population status of the large mammals living there. Furthermore, it could be impossible to analyse the large herbivore population trends based on historical inventory data collected using different methods with unknown accuracy. Here we discuss the advantages and disadvantages of three most commonly used inventory methods for large mammals in Poland, such as snow tracking, driving censuses, and pellet group counting. Conclusions on the reliability of the three methods were drawn based on the results of ungulate inventories in the Roztocze National Park, Poland. Snow tracking generates an error of unknown magnitude; therefore, historical data estimated by this method should be cautiously approached. Additionally, with this method, only coefficients are obtained, based on which it is impossible to estimate the population size. The pellet group counting is the least variable method regarding errors; it is cheap and logistically straightforward. Moreover, it also allows the analysis of winter habitat preferences of ungulates. It is therefore recommended as a method for estimating deer and wild boar abundance in many countries worldwide. In summary, long-term trends in abundance are most important for analysing and managing large mammal populations. Therefore, it is necessary to carry out inventories over several years, for which, due to the minor estimation errors and simple logistics, the pellet group counting method seems best.

Opis:
The purpose of the strictly protected area of the Białowieża National Park (BNP) established in early 1900s, was to protect a compact block of the Białowieża forest from any direct human influence and activity. Its founders considered it a “laboratory of nature.” In 1936, five rectangular plots with a total area of ca. 15.5 ha (ca. 0.3% of the BNP) were set up for regular monitoring of stand development with regards to the initial state and variability of soil conditions. During the first 76 years of the project, a steady increase in the proportion of hornbeam and lime tree at the expense of shade-intolerant species was observed. This trend has been interpreted by the researchers involved in the monitoring of the permanent BNP plots to constitute a biodiversity-threatening development caused by preservation efforts. Such an interpretation has been widely incorporated in the public debate by political authorities and the forestry sector. In this critical article I challenge the major arguments presented by the key expert in silviculture, prof. B. Brzeziecki. My criticism is directed at the methodological approach as well as at the data interpretation.
