Opis:
Orthodox liturgical practice indicates a blessing, dedication and consecration of icons. It is not unified within the universal Church and within the autocephalous Church and local liturgical traditions. This article focuses on explaining the meaning of the blessing rites in the practice of the Polish Autocephalous Orthodox Church. This practice is largely consistent with the practice of other Orthodox Churches of the Slavic tradition, including The Russian Orthodox Church, the Orthodox Church of the Czech Lands and Slovakia, the Bulgarian Patriarchate and the Serbian Patriarchate. This part deals with the features attributed to the icons: canonicity, uniqueness and sanctity. Next, an analysis of the liturgical rites of blessing was carried out and their meaning was shown.

Opis:
In the National Museum in Cracow there is a rare figure showing the so-called thesis sheet, represented the defence of the thesis by Damian Galachowski, the student of the Kiev Academy, and dedicated to Archbishop Rafal Zaborowski. The graphic work was made in 1739 by the Kiev engraver Hryhorij Lewicki. The large graphic thesis sheets are one of the most interesting and representative Baroque works, composed of many motifs, symbols, allegories and emblems. The exact recognition of each of them allows to fully read the contents of the work. The Lewicki’s figure depicts the person of Metropolitan of Kiev and shows his achievements. In the Ukrainian engraver’s view Rafal Zaborowski appears as one of the most prominent representatives of the Kiev clergy of the 18th century. Thanks to him the academy has been restored to its former glory: he expanded academic buildings and student burses, increased professors salaries, introduced discipline and high level of teaching.

Opis:
The Liturgikon was published in Venice in 1519, for the first time in Slavonic. It consists of 240 pages and contains a teaching addressed by St Basil to the clergy, commandment of St Basil, description of the preparation before the Divine Liturgy, the Prothesis, the liturgy of St John the Chrysostom, the liturgy of St Basil the Great, the liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts, Vespers, Matins, the calendar and the closing prayers for feasts as well as smaller prayers, gospel readings for Sunday matins and others. The article discusses several aspects of the liturgy: commemoration of the saints during the prothesis, participation of the deacon in the intentional commemorations of the faithful, formula of the litany during the prayer for the catechumens and those who prepare themselves for baptism (nowadays red only during the Great Lent), Eucharist canon, procedure of the distribution of the Holy Gifts, formula of the thanksgiving prayer after the communion. In the Eucharist canon, only the Serbians still keep the ancient tradition, whereas Bulgarian, Polish and Russian contemporary versions of the Liturgikon have a different form – the entire text of “It is worth and just...” is sung. Also the contemporary version of the Epiclesis was enlarged by the troparion of the third hour. Different is also the Bulgarian version. Only the Serbs kept the ancient formula. Those variations of the same model indicate a more general problem of polarisation of the religious cult of the Slavs into southern (Bulgarian and Serbian) and northern (Kievan and Moscow) tradition. The latter influenced the forms of orthodox religious cult in Poland.

Opis:
The present paper discusses the presentation of holy children-martyrs in the Orthodox hymnography. Eight leading themes that appear in liturgical texts are presented. Four of them are common to the motifs used in the rite of a child’s funeral, and four others are reserved only for canonized children. The most attention was paid to the issue of childhood innocence and parents’ reaction to premature death (from sadness, through joy of the child’s salvation, to encouraging a child to suffer martyrdom for Christ). The presented examples come from the texts of services and Akathists in honor of selected holy children – mainly St. Gabriel of Zabłudów, St. Cyric and Julitta, St. Artemius of Verkola.

Opis:
Byzantine temples were richly equipped with polychromes, mosaics and frescoes, constituting a very carefully thought-out ideological complement to the church. In each artistic era, they were an expression of their times. In the modern era, sometimes there were polychromes referring to Byzantine works or – in Uniate churches – corresponding to the spirit of the era, as in the church in Czyże in Podlasie. In the mid-twentieth century, Adam Stalony-Dobrzański, an artist associated with Krakow, undertook the creation of new polychromes in new Orthodox churches in Podlasie, corresponding to the challenges of contemporary art. The content of the article is, above all, an attempt to introduce this masterpiece in the first place.

Opis:
Holy Week, inseparable from the mystery of Christ’s Resurrection, is the center of the liturgical year. Each of the following days has its own specific meaning and extensive hymnographic material. The graphic representation is also connected with the content of liturgical rites. This article discusses the meaning of iconographic representations that are dynamically present at services – by carrying them from the presbitery to the middle of the church or carrying them around the temple in a procession (the icon of Christ the Bridegroom on Holy Monday, the icon of Christ crucified on Good Friday, the Epitaphios with a representation of Christ lying in the tomb on Good Friday and Holy Saturday). The text also discusses the relationship between the aforementioned icons and liturgical texts sung during the services.
